Great first hammock
My first time hammock camping and now I'm hooked. Hiked the approach trail of the AT to Springer mnt in the rain just to try it out. The Mantis set up was quick and easy. Slept dry through 3 nights of rain with zero issues. I'm 6 feet 212 lbs and had plenty of room to stretch out. I'll never bring a tent again.
Not for anyone over 200lbs
I’ll start with the good. Made of great lightweight material and set up pretty easy. Negative is it did not sleep well. Everything I tried I could not get good tension on the sleeping area. I’m 6’0 and about 210 there was plenty of leg space but no Matter what I did I would end up sleeping in a U position. Most of the tension seemed to be on the main cord above the rain fly and didn’t really support my body weight well. I bet it would sleep well for someone lighter or with less distance between trees but that’s not alway possible.
LOVE this hammock tent for the AT!
Bought for a 70 mile section hike of the AT. At the end of a foot crushing day of the roller coaster, this hammock tent was paradise. I’m 180, and have bursitis in my left hip, so sleeping on the ground was not an option. EASY to set up and take down, compact and lightweight. I love that everything is all attached (except fly) easy to keep track of pieces. If I were to recommend anything to improve it I might suggest more inside storage. I wear glasses and store my headlamp, biofreeze, cell phone and chapstick. I ended up buying a pouch and it worked out fine. SUPER comfortable. Perfect for the AT, I’ve used it camping in Alaska, but you will need to upgrade to a warmer bag as the temps drop at night and early morning.
Mostly Awesome
I got this hammock over the summer and was stoked to use it. My first time using it was in the backcountry and it held up quite well. I really liked the stake storage, fabric, and everything. One thing I really didn’t like though was that my cocoon for my hammock wouldn’t fit over it. As the cocoon is made to keep my person warm, this was an issue. You can’t loosen the top string at all for the bug net and it says taught so there was no way I was going to make it work. I ended up putting my cocoon inside the hammock… it was okay, but didn’t keep me as warm. I probably wouldn’t make this purchase again just because of this feature. Everything else though was great!
fine enough for entry level hammock camping
I’ve camped in my Mantis a handful of times now. Pros: - it’s as marketed, all in one, coming with the hammock, bug net, and a tarp - lighter than a tent IMO - it all packs down into one bag - price point. It’s kinda hard to beat when you get all three, plus straps. - I’m very tall, and I felt like I fit into the hammock just fine, albeit things were tight. Cons: - not a fan of how small the “shelf” is. It doesn’t fit much more than a cellphone, a beanie, or a headlamp in it. - under quilt not included, which I know is probably the most expensive part of a hammock like this due to the Down materials used. However, I did use Kammocks Bobcat under quilt on a trip and I was left feeling like I picked the wrong sleep system. For comparison, Warbonnet’s hammocks are much more “modular” than Kammock. You rely on buttons to attach the underquilt, and these buttons just would not stay attached to the hammock. Leaving me cold thru the night. Less than ideal - straps included are 10’. I went ahead and got the 15’ ones since they offer you a lot more range for setting up shop. All in all, I think this is a great entry point to the world of hammock camping. I’m happy with the purchase but I’m not at all impressed with Kammocks other optional buys, like the underquilt and straps. They really need to work on an underquilt that will work for the Mantis, because the bobcat sucks for the price you pay.
So easy
This hammock was so easy to set up, a caveman could do it. I didn't have to tie a SINGLE knot! The straps are super long so you can choose trees that are a variety of distances apart (good for me cause I can't estimate well). All three times I put it up I had to do very little adjusting. It did not rain so I cannot comment on the rain fly. My backpacking buddy was STRUGGLING with her hennesy asymmetrical hammock, whereas my setup was almost mindlessly simple. I had a comfortable sleep
great deal from the used- returned bin.
I’d be upset if I hadn’t got this second hand. But I screwed up hanging it first day. If you hang this up too low you might do what I did — rolled over after hitting the ground — tearing the bug net in half! After two hours of hand sewing I did repair it!! My main complaint though is I think it’s a bit on the short side as I’m only 5’-8’ but even lying diagonally tended to bend in the middle. I’ve torn other hammocks too — just a clutz!! Nice design and decent weight and bargain even at full price — except I don’t sleep well w/o an under quilt even in mild temps— Again shopping around — got a slightly used Eno quilt that actually works even though clips and draw strings didn’t match … now it’s too hot except for nights.
Perfect for motorcycle camping
I took this on a 4 day motorcycle camping trip through MI and was very impressed. I like the ENO hammocks very much but this set up is better if you want to use the bug screen and rain fly.
My choice for camping
I really like the design on this setup. The straps are very easy to use and adjustable. I used mine to winter camp with a under quilt and stayed warm with a good sleeping bag. It is a good option if you have trouble sleeping on the ground in a tent. I never been more comfortable sleeping outside. I really like how light it is as well. It is definitely worth the price since you don't really need a sleep pad.
Better then sleeping on the ground without doubt
I wasent sure how well i would sleep in Hammock but i definitely slept well woke up without soreness from sleeping on the ground it was a little bit of a pain set up first time around and i did get a little cold on my backside but i love weight reduction and space definitely recommend this product
