I use this pack for short (usually 2 to 8 miles) day hikes and typically carry a hammock, tarp, sit pad, poncho, headlamp, multitool, first aid kit, water filter, fire kit, toiletries (p-o-o-p) kit, satellite communicator, a snack and a handheld ham radio with me. This is my first hydration pack and I typically carry one to two liters of water in 1L bottles in the side pockets. Overall, I've been very pleased with the pack and I would absolutely recommend it to someone looking for a good day pack or even overnight pack if you can pack light. Some specific things that stood out to me are below. Pros • Overall construction and quality is awesome. No strings or lose threads hanging off of it, all of the seams seem straight and well sewn and any connection points seem adequately reinforced. • Separate compartment for hydration bladder makes it easy to remove and replace the hydration bladder without having to open the main compartment. If the pack was completely full it would be tough but, with my load taking it out and putting it back in is not a problem at all. • Sturdy sternum strap doesn't slide up and down the shoulder straps and the latch feels solid. Also, there's a little magnet on it that you can attach the mouthpiece for the hydration bladder to that's a nice addition. • It feels sturdy. Not sure if it's the structure of the pack or the padding for the back or a combination of those factors and the hip belt but the pack just "feels" sturdy. Some of my previous packs tend to slouch down toward the bottom with the same load. • Hip belt with pockets that I can get to. The hip belt does an awesome job of getting the weight off of my shoulders and the pockets on the hip belt are surprisingly easy to get to and use. They aren't big, but it is a 24L pack so I'm just happy to have them. • Hydration bladder keeps the water in the center of my back and not on either side, so the pack and the weight seems to stay more centered. • Zippered side pocket on the outside. Not entirely sure what I'll ultimately use this for but I like it. Cons • Very thin shoulder straps. • There are no lashing straps on the bottom of the pack. I normally strap my sit pad to the bottom but that's not an option on this pack. I'm experimenting with keeping it in the front or in a side pocket and, since the water is in the back it's not a huge deal but I had grown fond of the lashing straps on the bottom. • I would like to see one or two small internal compartments. I generally put snacks and my headlamp on the small outside pocket and keep my wallet and keys in an internal compartment. I really struggled between 4 stars and 5 starts because I'd really like thicker shoulder straps but the reality is that a) this won't be a long distance pack and b) it won't be a heavy pack so the current straps are likely fine and I'm just spoiled :)
Summary: Good, simple day pack that can double for daily use. Folks that prefer more organization/features may want to look elsewhere. The Gregory Inertia 24 is the perfect size for long day hikes in the summer, or shorter hikes in the winter. There is plenty of space for essentials and layering. The organization for this pack is on the minimalistic side. There are 4 compartments: the hydration reservoir, the main compartment, a sunglass pocket, and an accessories compartment. There is an exterior mesh compartment, that easily fits 32 oz Nalgene sized bottles with room to spare. The hydration compartment has plastic hook that interfaces with the included hydration bladder (~2 liters). Other hydration bladders can be used as well. The main compartment does not have any sort of internal organization. The sunglass pocket has a key attachment point and is large enough to fit headlamps, snacks, and other like sized items. The side accessories compartment is towards the bottom of the pack is can fit roughly the same size as the sunglasses pocket. This pack does not include load lifters, but I do not believe this pack was designed to carry heavy loads. It does not have any sort of frame, but weight is distributed well onto your hips via the hip belts. The hip belts have pockets, but unfortunately, they are too small to easily fit an iPhone 13 with case. It is possible, but I would not recommend it. If this pack had larger hip pockets, I think it would be worthy of 5 starts. The hip straps are generously long and smaller users may need to trim excess length. The back panel is does an okay job with providing airflow. The included hydration bladder (~2.0 liters) has a quick disconnect and the bite valve that magnetically connects to the sternum strap. The opening is small and can make cleaning difficult depending on your preferred cleaning method. A nice feature is a hook on the bottom of the reservoir so that it can be hung upside down to dry. This is a simple pack – it has everything you need and nothing else. The only real “feature” may be the hiking pole attachment, which can also be used to store an ice axe. I also used this for a day-to-day pack. The reservoir compartment can fit a 17” laptop with a padded sleeve, but it is a little tight. I would recommend this pack to anyone looking for a minimalistic pack for hiking and for general outdoor activities.
Purchased this bag for a trip to South America. I have been traveling with several different packs over time and always seem to have a major complaint about each. This pack solved most issues well. When wearing two packs, it wears well on your chest. The straps are small and yet padded well. I can fill it with things, hike for ten hours and because of the hip straps my shoulders are not completely worn out. Most packs of this size do not offer the hip straps. Also the bungee on the back is perfect for stuffing a puffy jacket. It fits all the essentials for a long day out. The ventilation on the back is pretty good, and is stiff enough to transfer load to hips. Overall have really liked it.
Great pack. Enough volume for a big day out, but low profile enough for tight rock scrambling and tight spots. For me, hiking pole stowing is a must and love the cargo lashing for when I shed layers. The hip strap pockets give you some nice space to carry little things that you need readily available like sunscreen, lip balm, knife, phone etc. Also, side pockets accommodate additional water bottles, outer layers, gloves etc. Finally, love the tension strap on the side that allows you to reduce the overall profile of the bag by sinching.
I just strap broke and they sent me a cheap replacement, wrong color black instead of the copper no magnetic holder, very thin and flimsy. I expected a replacement part that fit in my pack. I didn’t think that was too much to ask.
Good fit easy to use water bladder and works well for day hikes
This backpack worked great for a day trip hike in the BWCA. I love the hydration resivor and feel like it kept my well hydrated because it was so easy to use. The pockets on the belt are great for quick access items. I could easily pack my lunch, snacks, extra layers, hydration, and first aid kit in there. Solid backpack, I will for sure be ordering more from this company.
I've used this pack several times now, mostly short (~5mi) hikes to see how it will be for longer day hikes. My conclusion is that it will be great, as long as its not too warm out. First off, this pack is very light and comfortable. The foam back panel is comfortable enough that it doesn't take long and it no longer feels like there's anything against your back. The back panel, however doesn't provide much cooling airflow. I found that in 80 degree weather my shirt was soaked in sweat under the back and the shoulder straps. But that being said, it never *felt* hot or uncomfortable in those areas, and I think in lower temperatures it will be totally fine. The pads on the shoulder straps are also very comfortable and I didn't have any chafing from them at all. The waist strap is ok, but can rub a little bit if it's too tight. As for pockets, the outside of the pack is great. The main pocket is very spacious and will hold more than enough for a day hike. It holds enough that you can probably get away with an overnight trip, too. There are also four outside zippered pockets for holding all sorts of quick retrieval items. But one of the things I disliked about the pack is the lack of organization pockets on the inside. There are zero pockets/sleeves/organizing compartments inside the main pocket. It would be nice to have a few for small things at least. You do get an extra pocket if you're not using the reservoir though. Speaking of the reservoir, its great, except for one glaring problem. It's got a big mouth so its easy to fill, plus a molded handle to make it easy to hold while filling. And the best feature is an internal structure the keeps the two sides from touching, leaving an airspace that greatly aids in drying it out. The hose disconnects easily for removing the reservoir. The bite valve is at the second best and at the same time the worst feature of the bag. The bite opening works great and the magnet that holds it to the pack's sternum buckle is genius and also works great; let go of the hose, push it down, and it snaps right onto the buckle and holds tight. The problem with it is the open/close valve built into it to stop water leaking out when your don't have it on. It's a nice feature to have, but its so small and so hard to move that alone causes the pack to lose half a star. I've used other brands that have much better valves. This one will cause nothing but frustration for years to come. It would also be nice if this pack came with the 3 liter reservoir instead of the 2, but there are two mesh pockets on the outside for water bottles, so that's more or less moot. Now the shining star on this pack...the zipper pulls! Best zipper pulls ever. They are rubberized and U-shaped to fit your finger perfectly and allow easy opening of the zippers. If you have any problems with your hands or fingers, like arthritis, these are a godsend. Other things I like about the pack: The sternum buckle is magnetic and closes easily and securely. There is a nice big handle on the top of the pack for carrying or sliding over a suitcase pull handle. The quality of the pack looks pretty good, but time will tell. No wear and tear so far with one minor exception: on the shoulder straps there are a couple of gear loops, that are also used to hold the drinking hose in place. One of them has a Gregory label over the top of it that tore the first time I used the pack. The gear loops themselves look plenty strong and well stitched (I pulled pretty hard on them to test), but wouldn't you think they'd take a little more pride in their brand and make sure there own name labels didn't fall off? Like I said its a very minor thing. Overall the pack is great with the exceptions of the lack of air flow under the back and straps and the horrible valve on the bite valve. It should really have 4 1/2 stars, but I had to decide between 4 and 5, and I think it's better than 4 so I went for 5.
It’s a great pack but zero airflow makes for an extremely sweaty back. The 2 liter bladder is great for day hiking and it has ample room to store all your essential belongings plus some luxury things
Perfect pack for this size range, good for a day hike
