Don't fall for Exos hype - This is the best UL pak

I looked hard at the Flash 55 (padding sucks & uncomfortable, otherwise great) and the Osprey Exos (no hipbelt pockets lol) .... before I found the Gregory Focal 58. It's far and away the most well rounded of the three. I loaded it up with all my gear (except food) and took it out on a 3 mile hike. It's extremely comfortable and the weight distributes well. The drawstring on the main compartment is a little awkard but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Basically an Exos 58 but slightly larger and has hipbelt pockets. Glad I returned the Flash 55 ... the L is way to small for a 21 in torso and the Focal 58 is perfect at size L being 20-22 in. Can't wait to take it out on a trip

Shoulder straps too close together.

I chose this over other lightweight but full-featured mesh panel packs looking for greater comfort. I was surprised when i got it and the shoulder straps were in abrasive contact with the sides of my neck. I'm 6' 220 lbs with a 17.5" neck. Other features are good and the waist belt was comfier than the alternatives, but the shoulder strap spacing makes it unusable. This may be an oversite with Gregory since their heavier packs have the pivoting shoulder straps.

A great investment for future adventures!

I was worried that I can't fit Wild Ideas's Weekender in there but it fits! I have to strap my Big Agnes tent in the bottom but that is fine. I managed to stash my Western Mountaineering Sleeping Bag and Nemo pad in there. What's missing is a sack of lite clothing. What I like most is the free floating system that keeps my back off the pack during hot days. I still have my Osprey rain cover so may just use that instead of buying a new one. I was afraid about moving away from Osprey but this is definitely a great move for me.

My New Favorite Pack!!!

I've been using the Gregory Baltero 65 for the last 10 years and have loved every minute with it!! Over the last 2 years I have started switching out some of my older gear for more ultra-light equipment and my pack was the last thing on the list. I tried The North Face Banchee 50, but the pack didn't fit my gear as well as the Baltero 65 did. Next I tried the Hyperlite, but the absence of a frame made it feel like a overloaded Jansport backpack from highschool, super uncomfortable. I also tried the Big Agnes Prospector 50.. and while that one showed promise, especially in the hipbelt, the upper straps were just too narrow and stiff making it uncomfortable on my shoulders. Enter the Focal 58. This pack fit all my gear in the exact same way I had it in the Baltero 65, even though it's 7 liters less.. it's Amazing!!! It weighs 2.5lbs lighter and has better airflow all around. The shoulder straps are way more comfortable even though they have way less padding than the Baltero 65, like how is that even possible?! But best of all, I like how this pack still has a frame, which distributes the weight flawlessly!! By far the most comfortable pack I've owned. Do yourself a favor and just get it!! You won't regret it!!

Great lightweight pack

This pack replaces my Baltoro 75 for 7-8 day trips. I use the large size, and it works great for me. It fits a BV500 horizontally, at least in the large. I used it on a 7 day trip in the Sierra, staring with 37lbs and it was very comfortable. Very happy with the pack. Its 2.5lbs lighter than my Baltoro, but carries my gear very well. I keep the Baltoro for longer trips or colder weather trips. No problems thus far with wear or durability. It has just the right pockets, nothing it doesn't need. Not a true UltraLight pack, but I find the lack of suspension in the ultralights a problem for the trips I do. This pack hits the sweet spot for me.

Best lightweight airflow suspension backpack

I chose the Gregory focal backpack over the osprey exos line and zpacks arc haul line of backpacks because the Focal is cheaper, has the decent hip beltpockets, has a the best water bottle pockets, has a bestweight to volume ratio. When bought on sale a great deal I paid 180 during spring sale. Pros -Floating brain -best pockets for water bottle -very comfortable - Cons -No adjustable torso legnth -hip belt pockets too small -lightweight vs ultralight I feel like this pack makes a very good use of the extra weight compared to the competition in comfort and weight to volume ratio. Wish I could fit my huge pixel 7 pro in the hip belt pocket. Fits me like a glove and ventilates well, ordering the correct size is critical due to lack of adjustment.

Light pack with durability issues

I purchased the Focal 58 to replace my circa 2000 Palisades. While the Palisades still remains in excellent condition, I was looking for a more light weight pack. I thought the Focal would meet my needs for a multi-day hike on the NPT. Unfortunately, I ran into a durability issue almost immediately. While making final adjustments to the pack, one of the upper clasps securing the side compression straps broke. The bigger problem is that this clasp is permanently sewn into the pack so replacing it is not an option. The clasp is so delicate it can not be repaired. While this damage might seem minor the concern is the long term viability of the other clips and clasps are suspect. On a brighter note the pack holds a fair amount of gear and carry’s between 25 to 30 pounds well. In addition all the pockets are really well thought out and useful. I am 5’ 11” and about 185 lbs, my torso length is about 20”. I tried both the medium and large and will both fit, the medium fit better in the shoulders. While this pack carries well and is certainly light weight, concerns for long term durability constrain me from wholeheartedly recommending this pack.

This pack is a home run

I took this pack on a recent trip to the high alpine area of Southern Utah. We hiked 15 miles and this pack carried 30lbs effortlessly. I was a little worried carrying a "lightweight" pack since most of my life I have carried a traditional framed pack with all the zippers/pockets/organization you could ask for. This pack did everything I needed and did it under 3lbs. If you know what you are doing this is all you need for several days in the backcountry.

wow! what an amazing pack!

I was looking for a lightweight pack with the the options I wanted. Anyone who has ever tried to match UL with functionality, you’ll know how few options there are! This pack comes in just over two pounds, and has most of the bells and whistles offered in more traditional packs. Great pack Gregory!

Waist is not true to size

First and foremost this is one of the most comfortable packs I tested in the store with 25-30lbs weight. I've spent an embarrassing amount of time trying on packs and multiple trips to REI so that's saying something. Unfortunately the hip belt is NOT true to size on the medium. I'm a 31-32 waist currently and can drop to a 29 if I lose weight, and the hip belt bottoms out for me. I think this is due to the fabric being more flexible where the belt is sewn to, which allows it to stretch more than other packs. I did not have this issue on the S/M Zulu 55 or S/M Paragon 58. For me I think the comfort comes from a lack of initial hot spots. The fabric at the top of the hip belt and the inside of the shoulder straps is well padded and seamless (no rounded grosgrain edge) so it doesn't dig into me. Another reason is the hip belt allows for independent movement so there is no jostling of the pack when I walk. Even though Gregory advertises this on most of their packs, I still felt the jostling on their Paragon model. The lack of torso adjustment is concerning but I have a 19" torso and the medium was a good fit. One con is the compression straps at the bottom of the pack can only hold so much weight comfortably. I think a light sleeping pad is fine to strap there, but a 3lbs tent doesn't feel secure and wobbles a bit. I put the tent under the brain and that was much more secure and seemed like a good way to carry. I'm sure most will put their tent inside. Keep in mind I never tested this bag in the field, just walked around my house and up/down stairs so ymmv. I really wanted to keep this bag, but it's back to the drawing board. I'm only taking a star off since if the bag fits you properly I think it'll be money.
