I waited to write my review until I had been wearing these for awhile. Purchased for a 9 day hiking trip to Ireland. Originally wanted the waterproof version, but they didnt fit as well as the water resistant 🤷♀️( so I used a waterproofing paste) and they kept my feet dry while walking in wet grass and pouring rain. They were not slippery on wet stones or pavement. I developed plantar facia the week before the trip and these shoes saved me- they have terrific arch support - (better than my Mizunos) and gave me pain free miles of walking. Oh small thing but my shoes are always coming untied, but these have gripping laces and stayed tied all day. 100% recommend.
I work as a tour guide in Europe. I'd like to look more stylish, but after a stress fracture in my foot, support and comfort were more important. These saw me through 15,000-plus steps a day in relative comfort, over uneven cobblestones, climbing lots of stairs, and going on short hikes. And I liked that with their neutral color they don't scream "hiking shoe." These are really stiff (i.e. don't bend much) which (according to my podiatrist and from my own experience) provides the most comfort for feet recovering from an injury like mine. And the wide worked perfectly with my obnoxious bunions because the heel is still plenty narrow, so it didn't slip.
I have worn Oboz hiking shoes for many years now. The most recent pair of shoes that I purchased in June 2022 and started wearing in Oct 2022 started to fall apart in January. The nubs on the sole of the shoe have started to peel off. I'm super sad about this, previously a pair of these shoes would last me a minimum of two years not just a couple of months. What happened to the workmanship/material quality Oboz?
I LOVED Oboz, and I completely expected to like these new ones just as much as I put my old ones through everything. But they changed it for the worse, and immediantly when I put it on I knew I could not wear or use them. They've made the sole for the toe box arch up uncomfortably, even in a wide, my feet felt crushed in on the sides and toe box. Not to mention they're so ugly and got rid of the mesh across the toe. Please think twice if you have an older version of Oboz before buying, they are absolutely not the same.
The shoes feel like they will be quite comfortable. However, I ordered the color Drizzle, which is pictured as a light brownish color. The Drizzle that came has several awful gray tones, nowhere near brown. Although they feel comfortable, I’m not sure I can stand the ugly color.
Please note, Oboz has admitted to me via email that the Sawtooth X is actually a completely different product than the original sawtooth and sawtooth II. If you were a huge fan of the previous versions being comfortable right out of the box and having a tight heel lock, you may be shocked and disappointed when you first try on these shoes. This version definitely has a stiffer, more glove-like fit and will require several days of casual wear to break in the leather, and you may need to do a "runners loop" or "marathon loop" to obtain the heel lock (that's what the additional eyelet is for at the top of the shoe). Supposedly the toe box is a bit less roomy than previous versions, but it's still plenty roomy for my narrow foot and in fact may lead to less rubbing and blistering on the inside of my big toes which was an issue with previous versions. It's disappointing and misleading that Oboz advertised these as the Sawtooth product when the fit and feel is very different, however, this seems like a very well made, supportive, technical shoe that will perform well and is comfortable after proper lacing and break-in period. Which is exactly what I need, and why I always loved my Oboz. I have yet to try these on an actual hike and will be curious to see how they perform---my only concern is that with there being smaller and fewer mesh vents on the shoe, this version will be less breathable than previous versions and thus less competitive with the Merrill Moab 3s in that regard. But, only time will tell. I should also mention that while I loved the look of the previous versions and wasn't a huge fan of the updated look at first, I have since decided the sleeker look is more attractive and perhaps more appropriate to wear around town as well, without sacrificing performance. Overall, if you previously wore Sawtooth and maybe even tried the X on in the store and thought you hated it---I think it's worth purchasing and giving it a try. Especially with the REI member return policy.
I used to LOVE my Oboz Sawtooth hiking shoes! I would order them twice a year online without fail. This last year they changed them somehow and now I cannot wear them. They “updated” how they look but for me, they no longer fit the same way. Whatever they changed makes my feet hurt along the outside edge along the top of the foot. By about 5 miles I’m limping. (I’ve tried different types of socks) I hate having to find a new shoe that is comfortable! I wish they would have not tried to “fix” something that was not broken.
I have previously had the original Sawtooth and the Sawtooth II. The Sawtooth II had both a much larger toe box and a much higher profile than the original. The Sawtooth X is much more like the original, in my opinion. Which I am happy about. The Sawtooth II always felt a bit clunky on my feet. But the Sawtooth X feels like a glove that fits perfectly. If you loved the Sawtooth II because of the roomy toe box, you might be a bit disappointed in the X. I really like the feel of the X, and I'm happy for the change.
I was very impressed with my old Oboz Sawtooth II and wanted to get another pair for hiking. I own both the mid and low, waterproof and non-waterproof version. The Sawtooth II didn’t require any breaking in, are supportive, and performed excellently. The Sawtooth X is not the same. Both the arches on my feet hurt after a day of hiking in these. Construction is also not the same as the Sawtooth II. Corners were cut - no more lace tabs being one example. Why change a good product just to make it worse?
When I bought my first pair of Sawtooth shoes, I was amazed. They fit my wide forefoot perfectly, like no other shoes did. Finally I could go for a long walk without my feet bleeding. The Sawtooth II had the same perfect fit. But now I want to replace my Oboz Sawtooths, and I discover that Oboz has "improved" these shoes by taking away exactly what I liked. Why? Those other people who like the new fit with the smaller toebox—they had other choices, like for example every other shoe on the market. Those of us with wide forefeet and high insteps—we don't. Why couldn't Oboz stick with the original fit? Why why why why why? I hate this. It sucks in every possible way. Bring back the old fit for the people who loved it. Give the other people some other shoe in the lineup. If you liked the old version with the wide toebox, sorry, the new version doesn't have it. You are out of luck.
