Great camping or trail headlamp!

This little headlamp is simple yet powerful. Compared to others I've had in the past, the light is bright, crisp and clear, has a far reach, and the tilt on it is pretty good. I love that it is rechargeable rather than needing batteries and the product is sturdy and well made too. The strap is easily adjustable and comfortable on the head. The most important thing to me is that it turns off and on easily and quickly. My previous headlamp had to go through 4 settings (varying brightness and strobe) before turning off. I used this headlamp on a local trail at night, on a camping trip, and for night time biking so far and it worked perfectly the entire time for each. The battery lasted for all my needs and it has 3 lights to let you know when it is getting low. I definitely recommend buying a couple of these and keeping them in your camp inventory, or even if you just need something to see in your yard at night or for night biking.

Bought this as a second headlamp to go with my Black Diamond Sprint because the battery size is double and has a little bit more Lumens. My first use with it, I feel like the Sprint is actually brighter still and with using it for an hour, I lost 1 bar of battery on a medium setting. I’ll have to test it out a little more to see if the battery holds up better than the Sprint, but my opinion right now would be to go with the Sprint over this model and if your looking for something brighter, the Spot 400 would be a better option for a little more money.

Great headlamp, I don't miss the batteries!

I am pretty happy with this headlamp! It's comfortable on my head but also works great attached to my pack's sternum strap. The hinge is super smooth and the dimmer setting is really easy to use and convenient. I was a bit skeptical about a rechargeable headlamp because I have always found comfort bringing an extra pair of AAA batteries with me everywhere I take my old headlamp. But I found that the Astro 300-R is even more convenient (assuming you charge it up before a trip), saves the weight of backup batteries (the Astro 300-R actually weighs less than my old 'Spot Lite 200' filled with batteries+1 pair of backups), and the indicator lights on the side show the current battery level so that's not a stressor. The only thing I'll miss is the red light for camp, which this headlamp does not have.

Perfect for my needs

I use the headlamp for dog walking and wanted to replace my old AAA powered headlamp with a rechargeable one that cast a broad and uniform beam to light my path. This one does a great job in that department--see the photo. Being able to change the intensity by holding the on/off button down is a nice feature and intuitive. I did need to look at the instructions for activating the strobe and locking it off. The LEDs that indicate the state of charge are a good feature. The headband is comfortable and the light doesn't hit the visor on my baseball cap even when it's not tilted down. The beam is bright even at half power and the distance that the beam illuminates is perfectly fine for my needs. I was a bit puzzled by the quoted distances since they are a lot longer than what I am seeing so I was wondering what they really mean.

Long-lasting light

The most impressive thing about this lamp is its long battery life. From full charge, it lasted 8-11 hours on the bright setting (8 hours, 9 hours and 11 hours on my three tries) and almost six days (137 hours) on the dim setting. Given that most campers are only going to use it a few hours a day, that makes ~3 days on bright and as much as six weeks on dim (assuming 3 hours per night). Without recharging. The head strap is not very comfortable. I hope someone will come up with a mounting method that doesn't give me a headache, but it's no worse than any other I've tried ... and better than some! Overall, pleasantly pleased.

Awesome, effective, comfortable

I really enjoy this headlamp. It’s rechargeable by a short usb cord that doesn’t take up hardly any space. It’s comfortable on my head. The angle is adjustable but sturdy. There are three blue lights on the side that let you know how much battery life is left, which is so so helpful. While this model doesn’t have some of the features that I like in other headlamps (red light, dimming) it is a reliable tool that helps keep me out of the dark. I highly recommend this product yo a person who wants a rechargeable option.

Almost perfect, don’t like fading between settings

I got this as an additional headlamp for trail running at night to go with one I have that uses AAA batteries. I’d rather not waste so much money and resources so this as a rechargable is great. The light is very lightweight, the band is comfortable and the light output is very usable. My only gripe is that there is a min setting and a max setting which are pretty easy to hit, but to get to “medium” you have to hold the button down and somewhat guess where partway is between the two. When I’m tired and running at night I don’t want to have to think or guess. I want a discrete medium setting. It’s a minor ding and I’d do half a star if I could but little things matter on long runs.

A good light within its design limitations.

Disclosure : I was given us like to review by Black diamond through REI. This light has some design features which may be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the situation. It has a micro USB rechargeable self contained battery. An indicator on the side shows the status of charge. It is useable for this. Battery life was not a problem in several days use. There is no way to replace the battery with AAA or a second rechargeable in a pinch. There is also no way to lose your battery. There is no red mode if that is a concern to you. There is a strobe mode. Overall, the output is quite usable, with variable output, and a practical low and high power. Beam dispersion angle was wide enough I did not find myself moving my head around all the time. There were not any significant hotspots or dark areas in the beam pattern. For the price, I feel like it is a good practical option. I intend to keep this plugged in and awaiting use in a vehicle console.

Died Too Young!

I bought this headlamp in mid-November and by mid-December it was dead. The power level lights went first. They would flash intermittently and then quit coming on altogether. Then the lamp would come on while on the charger. Finally it just quit working. I got maybe 20 runs in with it. I love the weight, the comfortable headband, and the levels of light output, but less than a normal month’s use before it dies definitely means poor product quality. Also, the power button is difficult to feel while wearing running gloves.

Its like the Moji Lantern for your head

Black Diamond took all of my favorite aspects of the Moji Lantern and put it into a head lamp. The light on the headlamp is adjustable so that if I need bright or dim light, it's easily adjusted by pressing down on the main button after I turn it on. It's great for when I need a bright light for walking or dim light for reading. An unexpected aspect of this headlamp is the ability to attach it to a chest strap. There have been times in the past when didn't want to wear a head lamp. The rechargeable battery holds a charge for a long time. Overall I am super happy with this headlamp
