Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Nice cushion, tongue an issue

Pros: Just a touch more cushioning than the Lone Peaks. Runs true to size. Roomy toe box. Cons: The tongue!! Altra please fix this! Too much heel/ankle padding, lets in debris. I love the Lone Peaks but my older knees needed a bit more cushioning. The Timps have just the right amount of cushioning for me. I tried Altra's Mont Blanc but could not get my heel to feel locked in with them. With the Timp heel padding, my heel feels good and secure. The downside of all the padding is that stones and debris finds its way into the shoe. It seems like even a short 3 mile run on the trail requires gaiters. And, it is near impossible to snug the heel because of the tongue. ALTRA, PLEASE REDESIGN THE TONGUE. The tongue is so padded yet stiff that it applies a painful amount of pressure on the top of the foot when you try to snug the heel to keep out the trail debris. The tongue also moves around quite a bit especially at first. I've got 50 miles on the shoes and its finally starting to stay put. The tongue stiffness is another issue. Thankfully it's the heavier sock time of year because the long stiff tongue definitely rubs. I'm still waiting for the tongue to soften a bit and have been tempted to cut it back. I will keep going with this shoe because i need the cushion. I really miss the Lone Peak upper though.

Sadly Garbage

I don’t wear these shoes every day, but they’re just not holding up well at all. The mesh fabric is fraying in several places on both shoes. I’m really disappointed. I paid $160 for them in May, only 5 months ago at my local REI store salesman’s suggestion. Going to see if I the store might help me with a return/refund and will not buy this brand again.

walking shoe

I purchased these shoes primarily for walking and exercising 3 mo ago because they have a wide toe box and zero drop. I have Neuromas in both feet and these were recommended. They have been great for the neuromas. My issue is the hole that has worn in the top of the toe box and the wear on the inside of the heel. I've had brooks shoes for almost a year and have never had a hole in the fabric. I expect a shoe at this price point to hold up better than these.

I would not purchase this version again.

Long time Altra shoe lover. I was so excited to use the Timp 4s. After wearing through four Timp 1.5s it was due time to get another pair of Timps. This version of the shoe was initially soft and responsive making it a potential great race shoe. Unfortunately, after only using the Timp 4s on light compact trials (stroller friendly) for 150 miles the sole wore quickly. To add to the mix the side materials started to show signs of blow out. Sad to say that I will be considering other footshape shoes that can hold up to light terrain trail running.

Disappointed!

I fell in love with this shoe on the last model. I was a little skeptical ordering because the sole looked different to me, it looked higher. I tried them on before leaving the store that i picked them up at. I immediately took them off and returned! I have problems with balance, foot drop and nerve pain. So the last model was perfect for me! With the wide toe base it made more surface area for me to stabilize. I was able to go further because i wasn't stumbling as much. The end of toe was more rounded so i wasn't catching. I dont understand why companies have to ruin a good product. Went back to the Lone Peaks.

Hold your TONGUE!

I only wear Altra's. This is my third pair of TIMPS because I love them. I have worn them three times now. I liked them the first day but the second day, I realized the tongue slides to one side. Then they changed the material of the tongue where it now cuts the front part of my ankle. It's very uncomfortable. Today I had a race, so I wore above the ankle socks so that it wouldn't cut me. I don't want to have to wear above the ankle socks. PLEASE fix this!!!

Love the fit and comfort, NOT the durability

I love the comfort, wide toe box and cushioning. My favorite shoe! I bought them Feb 23 and by the end of April, they began to deteriorate; stitching coming loose & a hole near the toe guard on the left shoe. I walk 3 miles a day, most days, so they don't even have many miles on them yet. That's after 2 months of minimal wear. Thought I found the best shoe, but it seems they can't even hold up to short, simple walks! Disappointing!

Already Falling Apart

I bought these a few weeks ago at a local REI store. I really liked how they felt on my feet at first. They have a great cushion for trails. However, after some causal hiking, I was having pain in my ankle from the tongue cutting into my skin. This results in having to pull up your socks constantly or just wearing higher socks. This problem I could deal with... I continued wearing them, but then the sole started coming apart after just a couple of weeks of regular wear. It seems to be a consistent issue with Altra shoes to wear out too quickly, and for the price it's really disappointing. I'll be returning these, and I'm not sure I'll buy from Altra again (my fourth pair from this brand).

Love the shoe but 12 to 13 mo after purchase, inside back seam by heel has split on both shoes😵‍💫. Probably pass date of replacement.

Mixed feelings

The Timp 4 fit my feet perfectly in terms of feel, comfort, lightness, etc. However, they don't last very long. My sides have holes in them & I had to duct tape them. The treads are worn out too. So I'm mixed. I love how they feel, but it's very expensive & inconvenient to have to replace them only after a few months.

Comfortable Shoes

Really love these shoes, they’re the only sneakers/runners I have ever owned that have fit perfectly to my wide feet. They’ve made running and hiking so comfortable (no more toes hurting post workout) however, I KNOW, I really want to say they have no problems but, I really wish they didn’t wear down so fast. I have only used these for 4-5 hikes and a few runs this summer and the tread has worn down significantly and the mesh at the side of the shoes started peeling off after a couple of trips. If those weren’t issues I would totally buy another pair, but for the price and the wear and tear in such a little period of time , I don’t think I’ll be buying these again.
