Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Comfortable and light!

These are the most comfortable running shoes I’ve owned. The toe box lets my toes stretch out when running and they are supportive for standing as well. The back portion of the shoe is well padded and one piece of material so it won’t have some odd rubbing on the heel. Shoe laces are a bit too smooth to stay tied well, but other than that they are great. I would recommend sizing up as well, the sizes are on point but needing a bit more room for movement it was a necessity. I am a women’s size 8 and sized up to a 9.5!

REI what is happening with your quality assurance? I just received these Rivera 2 shoes and right out of the box I could see that they are used, dirty and worn on the inside. If you are going to sell used items at least have the decency to let the buyer know that they are buying used items! And at the very least CLEAN them up and offer a discount! I expect new shoes if I am paying full price!

Some colours more cushiony than others

I bought the Rivera 2s in black (we don't have other colours in Canada) and fell in love instantly: comfortable right out of the box, felt like walking on clouds and just amazing every way. I loved them so much I ordered the light green from the US. I don't know why (when I emailed customer service I was told different colours have different soles) but the light green ones have a hardened cushion; my foot soles noticed immediately and after trying them on my treadmill I went to bed with sore knees. I'm so disappointed because I loved the black ones so much and because it is a gamble for us Canadians to order from the US with longer timelines and duty to pay.

Alta Rivera 2 runs smaller than the older Rivera

First time buying this brand. I am starting to get bunions so I was looking for a wider toe box and these feel great. I bought at the same time the Rivera in a 7.5 (I usually wear a 7-7.5 depending on the shoe) and I found I needed an 8 in the Rivera 2. Both are very comfortable and did not have to break in the shoe at all. The Rivera 2 has a little bit of a toe covering at the very tip that the original Rivera does not have, therefore, i needed a larger size to accommodate my big toe from not feeling that slight stiffness at the edge of the toe. All in all, I would definitely buy these again.

My Favorite Shoes but Disappointed

These are my favorite shoes for running, walking and every day comfort. I got my first pair over a year ago and loved them so much I ordered four more, but three of my new ones are coming unglued on the bottom after very little wear. I have already returned one, but would really like to find a glue to fix the others. I'm so disappointed in the quality of these shoes.

Love this shoe!

I love this shoe! I know there are mixed reviews with it having the slim foot shape, but I honestly really like it. The toe box is still wide and roomy with more than enough room for my toes, but it's slimmer around my mid-foot and heel - keeping my foot secure. This being said, I have narrow feet so I need a slim shoe as is, but like having a wider toe box. I started wearing barefoot shoes only within the past year. I had to have reconstructive foot surgery on my left foot to build an arch. I'm very flat footed, over pronate, and had a very poor bone structure in my foot. After my surgery, and during my recovery, I was intrigued with the idea of barefoot shoes and got a few pairs of Altra's. Ended up loving the Rivera 2's! I had some nerve damage along the outside of my foot and my pinky toe is super sensitive to sensations/pressure. So the spacious toe box, and soft upper of the Rivera, was much needed. I love how it has the benefits of barefoot shoes (wide toe box, zero drop, flexibility), while still providing cushion (which is something I desperately needed while recovering from surgery). I rotated two pairs from mid-Spring through the Summer and now into Fall. That includes a weekend to Chicago, a week of walking through Disney World and standing at a conference multiple days, as well as a vacation with a lot of walking. Bottom line - two of these were my primary shoe for all activities and work all summer. The soles are wearing off so I won't be wearing them once it starts snowing, but they're so breathable it's almost too chilly to wear them anymore so the timing worked out well. I can't wait to get a couple new pairs next spring once the weather starts warming up. Please don't stop making this style!

I would not buy this again

This shoe is sold as foot shaped yet the longest part of the toe box is the middle. If your longest toe is your big toe, this shape forever your foot and toes off center and is very uncomfortable. The lace holes between the inner and outer layer of fabric don't line up and are cut too narrow so it's very hard to re-lace the shoes- especially if you want to use the highest lace hole by the ankle (however you may run out of laces to tir them if you lace through that hole). The laces are also flat and made of slick material so they come untied easily. However the cushion level is nice and they otherwise seem durable.

Finally a zero drop that works for my narrow foot!

First let me say I love Altras. They are the only running shoe that I don’t end up with the ball of my foot and my outer toes hurting. I’ve worn Escalantes and Lone Peaks, both so wide that the fabric buckles on the forefoot, and I have to tie them really tight so my heel doesn’t slip. The Rivera 2s actually fit, forefoot and heel! And I love that I still feel connected to the road but have enough cushion to feel comfortable. I did go up half a size for the best fit. Thank you Altra. Now please make a hiking boot for narrower feet!
