I had considered getting trekking poles for months. Then when I bought these and got out on the trail with them I was kicking myself for not getting them sooner. These are lightweight and super easy to adjust the height on. They collapse down small so if I don’t want to use them during flatter stretches i can easily put these in my backpack. I also bought the rubber tips which help give greater traction in rockier terrain. I am extremely pleased with my purchase and I do highly recommend these trekking poles to hikers of all abilities and skill set.
Overall these Trail Back Trekking poles are ok after some adjustment and do a good job. Locks were slipping on first two hikes. Was easy to adjust lock tension with Phillips screw driver but took a few tries to stop slipping. I feel these locks on lower section should have been adjusted with more tension during manufacturing checks. A little more annoying is a subtle vibration in the pole at the length setting I use. This becomes more noticeable on a longer hike as pole vibrates a little with every step transferring this sensation to my hands. Probably would try a more expensive model if I were to buy another pair down the road.
Sometimes basic is just what a person needs. Sometimes burly is needed. I've always looked for the lightest trekking poles because after all, all that weight on my hands! But a basic, but sturdy trekking pole that I can choke up on to get through a rough snow patch, pitch my UL tarp, or get caught in some gnarly talus and not worry about it snapping, fits the bill. These poles are adjustable, with a solid flicklock. The flicklock can be adjusted with the turn of a multi-tool, or any pocket screwdriver. the rubber handles are all I need, with some wrist straps for the "Oh My God" type trails. The Black Diamond Trail Back trekking pole. A simple, basic pole that works.
I have been debating getting hiking poles as starting to do a lot more hiking. While visiting a friend in Vegas who hikes and backpacks a lot, she convinced me into getting them. The gentleman that helped me was so knowledgeable and I felt like I got what I needed for exactly the type of hiking I do. I've only used them twice and they were a game changer. I love the telescopic feature of these poles but realize they may not fold as small as folding ones. My friend has the latter and suggested the telescopic for ease of use. Seems to be great quality and durability for the money.
These did the trick for a strenuous 7 mile hike up 3500 feet to Mt Washington and back down. We really needed hiking poles and were glad to have these. A very convenient feature was being able to adjust the height at two points. I customized the heights for going up and down. Worked great!
1st time buying poles. Liked the measurements on the poles so I could adjust them accurately every time. Bought them to help off load weight on the downhill side of the hike. Worked well!! A little hard to close the adjuster latches with older fingers.
I purchased tips to go on my new Black Diamond treking poles. I have been hiking with my family and the Boy Scouts for many years. With my next adventure heading to Philmont I chose to purchase trekking poles and tips to support me as I climb up Mt. Baldy. In trying hikes at Mohican they were useful to keep me upright in some slippery spots, but they really proved their use at Shawnee State Park. Climbing the elevation and not having poles with these tips would have been impossible. In my opinion looking at others gear Black Diamond treking pole tips gave me more grip and stability to be able to finish the 2,000 foot elevation change, 2 day, 25 mile backpacking trip.
Trekking Poles were easily adjusted and helped me keep my footing when hiking trails including snow at Glacier National Park.
I’m a first time user of trekking poles. These were very sturdy on extremely rocky terrain. I’m pleased with my purchase.
I love knowing these polls were built for a work out, so I could work out without worrying about them! Once I got the measurement numbers down, they were easy to collapse and readjust. I found them to be extremely lightweight when going through moments where I didn’t need them. My next plan is to buy rubber tips or walking tips for using on asphalt, as well as snow baskets for my new hobby, snowshoeing!!! my husband, and I are extremely happy with our Black Diamond Trail Back poles!!
