Lightest of the light adjustable Z-poles

If you're familiar with the prior Distance Carbon FLZ series then here are the improvements to this 2022 version. The wrist straps now run into the handle so they now work the same as most poles on the market. Previously they were just hung off a ring through the handle which came across as an afterthought. Next the tips are now threaded so they can accept threaded baskets as opposed to clipped baskets. The poles include both baskets currently available for the Distance series which are the tiny trail running baskets depicted in the photos and a more standard sized trekking basket. Note that these threads and baskets are sized specific to the Distance poles. The two final changes are to the locking mechanisms. This 2022 Carbon version is now using Black Diamonds FlickLock Pro clamp for the height adjustment so its the same as what is used on their higher end trekking poles like the Alpine Carbon Cork. I find this holds a little more securely than the standard FlickLock (plastic lever) version but ultimately this is more of a cosmetic change to make the poles look and feel higher end. The better change, however, is the button lock for the 3 section deployment has been improved. No longer does the locking button nest directly in the carbon fiber shaft. This was a failure point on the old version since carbon fiber does not deal with concentrated stress pressure well. Often the carbon fiber area supporting the button would develop fractures and crack leading to failure. This small section around the locking button is now reinforced with a plastic sleeve segment and locks against an aluminum support ring. Time will tell if this has any issues but I cannot see how it couldnt be far improved to the prior design. Like the prior version I would recommend these to people where weight is of high priority. These poles are incredibly light with my 125cm version weighing 169g (just under 6oz) per pole (+7g if changed to the trekking pole basket). This weight is achieved in no small part thanks to the very thin carbon fiber shafts used so just keep that in mind that the weight comes with some durability concerns particularly over time. BD also offers an aluminum version that is roughly 45g heavier per pole but will assuredly take more abuse. Essentially these poles are marketed specifically to people who want the lightest most compact pole available with the trade-off of some durability/useful life of the product compared to something more robust and/or aluminum. I will note that these use the same threaded cabling adjustment as all BD Z poles so the lowest section is actually replaceable and I'm sure BD will soon add it to their parts section. Included in the purchase are two types of baskets, minimalist trail running and standard sized trekking baskets. Also included are two types of tips, tungsten and rubber. The only real con is that I think the grips are a little on the small side but otherwise I cant find much to complain about. For me this is a great option to just throw in the pack and not really have to think about it. If I need them they're there and if they end up just riding in the pack then its a mere 12oz. Really happy with the product improvements and otherwise I'm looking forward to racking up some miles with them.

Just Don’t Last - Buy LEKI instead.

Purchased 6 pairs of Black Diamond poles. They just don’t last. Each pair had some type of issue, and I returned them all within the 1 year warranty time frame. Try LEKI poles instead, they have a much better performance and quality

Not strong enough for tough trails

Used these on JMT. Tip on one broke off after maybe 90 miles. 120 miles or so in and trying to cross dangerous San Joaquin river, I laid them down to put on my water shoes, and wow, the handle was hanging on one of them with two strings. I could not make this up. Had to cross with one regular and one short pole which in hindsight was not smart. Unbelievale how cheap these handle connections are given the price point. Unacceptable performance. Maybe good for light easy trails, but when it comes to rocks, granite and technical terrain, leave them home and use something stronger.

broke after 8 miles

The first two distance poles I purchased were the aluminum ones and they both broke along the lock-nut, which plenty of reviewers had complained about. Each had lasted less that 60 miles for me - a total bummer. I then tried the carbon ones for the added durability, but they took broke. This time along the plastic near the carbide tip. those lasted under 10 miles. Absolutely pathetic. I've enjoyed Black Diamond products in the past but when it comes to the durability of their 'distance' trekking poles, it's totally laughable. Beware when purchasing their trail running poles- unless you enjoy having your gear break on your first few runs.

Good for easy trails and running but not strong

Not good for tough trails like the JMT. After maybe 90 miles on trail, the tip on one pole broke off. After maybe 130 miles, I set them down to put on my water shoes before crossing the dangerous San Joaquin River. Picked them up and unbelievably the handle on one fell off, only held by two strings....I could not make this up. Had to cross river with one short and one long pole. Very unbelievable and unacceptable performance. Shameful really. Very fragile. Get stronger poles to support your body on a tough trail. Use these if walking or running on a normal trail and you want something lightweight.

Best Ever

I bought my first Distance Carbon FLZs way back when Black Diamond first offered them. I used them in all kinds of desert hikes, big mountain summits (Mount Whitney, Grand Teton, Granite Peak in Montana, Gannett Peak, etc,), all hard going and a LOT of pole abuse. My second pair ditto. Then two days ago I came hustling down 2,000 feet from a peak in Oregon, in brush, scree, and snow, and one pole broke internally and came apart. Can you understand my anger when I only got 11 YEARS out of those crappy poles?? [Just kidding, of course. ] I have other Black Diamond poles for snow, etc. , and I don't look anywhere else for top hiking/climbing gear.

Super lightweight but not sturdy enough

Positives: super light, easy to pack, easy to deploy. This is the reason I gave two stars b/c these features are totally ideal. Cons: broke after one use. I originally bought these for the lightweight carbon fiber and it may have been a bad thing to base the purchase on. During the first use during a day hike ascent, the pole collapsed and I figured out that the interlocking button broke. I was able to jerry rig the pole to keep enough length (albeit too short for me) to keep using. On the descent the other pole had the exact same problem happen. When I was trying to do the same thing for this pole, the handle physically disengaged from the inner rope so this was unusable for the remainder. For reference, I’m 5’6” and 130-135lbs and was using just a small day hike backpack so not carrying heavy weight.

You would think a trekking pole is just a trekking pole:)....wrong.

The whole Z pole line is really quite amazing. Just think how many models are available how we can all just choose the very one we want to incorporate the activity at hand. The BD engineers really pay so much attention to detail. You can tell they are outdoor people and have put these things through years of use and fine tuning. I had some of the original Z Poles so I have witnessed first hand how they have wonderfully evolved. Light, compact, multi functional for different terrain, nice swing weight, you won't want to go anywhere without them:). I don't! Have used mine on 4 continents.

Amazing Poles. Super easy to open, close and adjust the size. The poles are ultra-light and comfortable which was a necessity after 22 straight hours on the trail. I would highly recommend!
