Lightweight and extremely compact - perfect for bicycling camping, where space and weight are at a premium. Not the warmest bag out there but good down into the low 40s, which is as low as I have gone with it. They say it takes up 14 liters volume when compressed but it goes much smaller. I cycle with 12-liter Aeroe bags and the Galactic takes up about two-thirds of the bag, or 8 liters, leaving me with room for some clothing, etc. Just remember to unpack it and let it expand when you're not traveling with it, as down will permanently compress if always kept tightly packed. Love this bag!
I have been wanting a classic style, roomier rectangular down bag. My family gave this one to me as a gift and I was excited to use it as it seemed just what I was looking for. I have only used it for one car camping trip in June on the Sound where nighttime temps where about 50F which I thought this bag should be ideal for. However I barely slept as I could not get warm even wearing wool long underwear and a thick puffy vest with wool socks and wool hat. The down fill on this bag is very sparse, I would not recommend this at all unless you run warm and are looking for a cooler bag for the summer months. Not sure what I will do with this bag but if you run at all cool I would keep looking, Big Agnes makes much warmer though less compact down bags.
Our FAVORITE sleeping bag yet! The wife and I both have one, and love them. We're both side sleepers who sleep warm, and this bag make sleeping comfortable again. So far we've only used them in temps in the upper 30'sF, but we were still SUPER warm and even had to open the bag to help regulate temps down. We love the light weight are able to compress it down to smaller than a volleyball for when we are backpacking.
Full disclosure: I do not use this bag for camping. I travel to Alaska bush communities for work and I have to pack everything in, so this has been a great packable blanket for me. I have used it indoors when the temperature inside has dropped to 45 degrees, and it has kept me warm. I use it on a daily basis and wash it every two weeks. It washes and dries well in a standard washer and dryer. There are no issues with the down fill coming out of the bag. After 18 months of daily use, the only issue now is that the Kelty screen printed name is starting to wear off. Sometimes the zipper does get stuck on the fabric, but this has been an easy fix. It is very light weight and packs well. It goes into my luggage and adds very little overall weight to my bag.
I can’t be more impressed with a sleeping bag than I am with this one. It came with me on a three day backpacking trip and after hours of hiking wrapping myself in this lightweight thin well insulated cocoon was heaven. It kept me super warm but with enough room for me to sleep on my stomach with my knee up and roll around as I please. One of my best nights sleeping on a mountain ever. Also loved cinching the top closed around my head with my beanie on - I felt so safe and warm. 10/10 obsessed with this bag!
I tried this out last night and the temperature got down to 50° and this thing was freezing. I had to grab a rumpl blanket to cover my legs inside the bag and use a wool blanket on my upper half. The material is incredibly loud. Just the little stubble on my face rubbing against it when I was breathing was enough to keep me up, I'm not a light sleeper. Every time I went to use the zipper I had to redo it to fix a snag at least three times and I was careful each time to not have it snag. I'm returning this later today.
In a camping setting, where you're bringing along a blanket or two and an insulated sleeping pad of some sort, it's great. Keeps you warm enough, perfectly adequate for 30F temperatures. Closer to 30F you'll be wanting to close the top around you to keep the heat in. Personally, it works really well for me because I'll always be bringing along blankets and it's not too hot with them. However, if this is the only thing you are packing, it'll leave you wanting more at anything under 40F. Otherwise it's built well and is well suited for general camping uses.
This is a very comfortable sleeping bag and the pack size is fantastic, but the 30F label is very misleading. I went camping in the low 40's and was uncomfortably cold with this bag, even after I put all of my other clothes on. Although I have not tested it during the summer, it seems like it would be a great bag for high 40's and above. If you are looking for a light weight, compact, affordable sleeping bag for late spring, summer, and early fall camping, this is definitely the bag for you.
This sleeping bag is supposed to be rated for 30 degrees, and I can ensure you that it is not. I work outdoors and have used a fairly diverse amount of sleeping bags. This one unfortunately ranks low among them. There is also an alarming amount of down feathers coming out of the bag upon first use. I’d say it feels more like a lightweight polyester sheet than it does a proper sleeping bag.
We went camping and the daytime temps were 60's and predicted 30's for night. This bag was not even close to keeping me warm. I had on a long puffer coat, thermal base layer, fleece pullover on top, and thermal base layer, and thick sweat on bottom. Plus gloves. Add merino wool socks and waterproof socks on top. Had to move to the car from the tent and did not find much relief. Was really hoping this sleeping bag would work out but sadly, went back to return it the next day. Might be a good option for summer camping - you could open it up and use it "blanket" style.
