Great for kayaking
Bought for my daughter who was unable to try on in store. She is a curvy 29, and Patagonia sizing recommended an 8. But went with a 10 as so many reviewers recommended to size up-and that was the smallest size in the store at the time. They seemed a good, sort of loose fit before she wore them on her kayaking trip. BUT the water loosened the weave and they fell right off when she hauled out onto the kayak. We exchanged them for an 8 with no hassle from REI. The 8 is perfect (follows the curves but not tight) and working well for her kayaking class. She loves them and receives lots of compliments. I would guess if your pants tend to be stretchy and you like your clothes tight, you might size up since they don’t have much stretch. However that did not work for us.

Not a 5" inseam
First of all, the fabric and style of these shorts are both great. I'm bummed that they didn't work out for me. For reference, I usually order a size 8 in Old Navy shorts and ordered the same for these. I couldn't even get them on, even after untying and unbuttoning them. I know all brands are different, but I thought that at worst, they would be a little snug. They seemed short to me compared to other 5" inseam shorts I wear, so I broke out the measuring tape. These are really more like a 4" inseam, MAYBE 4.5" if I'm being generous. Unfortunately now I have to pay $5.99 to return them since the nearest REI is over 2 hours away. Unless you're absolutely sure that they'll fit and you don't mind the shorter inseam, I'd recommend ordering something else.

These are LEGIT board shorts!

Like some other folks here, I went through a board shorts phase in the early 00s. Anyone who bought more than one kind knows that not all shorts were made alike. The good ones were not only incredibly durable, but instantly molded to your body shape. At some point, they left the stores, and finding them was next to impossible, as well as the quality being low. Guess what - these are the ones you've not been able to find for years! It took no time at all for these to become my 'too lazy to make a decision' default shorts in the summer. I also don't worry about any sort of damage to them when I do chores, either. I hope that Patagonia keeps making these.

Great board shorts, true to size

Great board shorts overall! I love the vibrant colors and patterns, and although the material is a little bit heavy and thick for my taste, the shorts seem incredibly durable for long-term use. Personally, I found that they run true to size. After reading all the reviews I sized up by just a half size. I am currently between sizes, with a smaller waist size and larger hips, so I went with the larger size, and I wish I hadn’t. They are way too big. The length is great IMO, but I think that’s personal preference. Overall a solid choice if you need quality board shorts!

cute but SMALL

I was excited they had these in stock at my local REI and grabbed 3 sizes to try having read they run small. I consistently wear a size 4/27 (Levi’s, Good American, Madewell, Lucky, Athleta, Eddie Bauer, etc…) so I picked up the 4, 6, and 8. Size 8 fit best. Size 6 fit but gave me weird love handles I’ve never seen before. Size 4 didn’t even make it off the hanger. I’m undecided on whether I’m going to keep them or not, as other buyers have mentioned they stretch out during/after use. I didn’t feel confident in the 6s, but now I’m worried the 8s will be too baggy. Anywho, these seem like perfect shorts for float trips, kayaking, and general water activities. I would just *highly* recommend trying them on before buying if you can. TLDR: super cute shorts that run VERY small (1-2 sizes) — buyer beware!

Run short and small

These run one size small and I actually like how they fit. I gave them a 3 because they are short. Maybe a 3 inch inseam… not 5 as Patagonia claims. I’m 5’6” and 125lbs normally wear a 4 and a 6 was perfect… just too short.

RUN SMALL!!!!

Great shorts, well made. I normally wear a size 10 but couldn't get them past my hips, will have to size up in exchange to a 12.

yep, WAY too small

These shorts might be the perfect boardshorts but I have no idea because my normal size (6) won't even go over my hips.

Way too small

I purchased a size larger than my normal size and they were still too small. They are super cute so I recommend trying them on before buying them.

Very uncomfortable.

These definitely run about a size too small, and they have zero stretch.
