Perfect for NY
First of all, size up to be comfy. I am 5.9’ with 165lb and first ordered a M. It was snug and I was upset thinking that’s how it should be and didn’t like the product. I returned and order a Large. The moment I put it on it was Wow I love it. Now… the functionality and the tip that is worth money. I’ve been using it with my Arcteryx Atom LT. People of the world! Eureka! I can use it on a windy 32° in NY while everybody around me is using heavy jackets, scarf, hoodie and puffy jackets. I’m sleek, light and amazingly comfortable. Oh with a very thin technical T-shirt as baselayer. I did it two days in a row before writing this review. Thank you REI because I decided to return a smartwool hoodie 250g with almost a year bought and never used. I did it because I decided to buy another R1 air just because I am impressively in love with this product. So light and regulated warm.
My Go-To Layer for Oregon’s Changing Weather
I ordered the Patagonia R1 Air Zip-Neck from REI a few weeks ago, and it’s already become my favorite layer for spring hiking here in Oregon. I’ve worn it on several early morning hikes near the Columbia River Gorge and the trails around Forest Park. Mornings can start out cold and damp, but this pullover keeps me warm without overheating once I get moving. The breathable waffle knit really does a great job of regulating temperature, and it dries quickly if you’re sweating or caught in some light mist. It’s lightweight enough to stuff into a daypack, but warm enough to wear as a midlayer under a shell when the wind picks up. Even though I bought it online, the sizing was perfect thanks to REI’s detailed size guide. Shipping was quick, and as always, REI’s service was reliable—one of the reasons I keep coming back. Patagonia always delivers on performance, but this one feels especially well-designed for active movement in unpredictable weather. Highly recommend it if you’re hiking or camping anywhere in the PNW.
Incredibly Cozy, BUT...
You put this garment on and immediately feel toasty warm and cozy. Honestly, I have never experienced anything like it. However: Dinged it one star because this badboy runs SLIM. I can't imagine how you could get anything but a T shirt underneath. Maybe that's the idea. But the tightness isn't my cup of tea. Size up if you intend to use it as a midlayer. Highly recommend, with that one caveta.
Incredible pullover. Awesome moisture wicking!
I purchased this pullover for early morning hikes. I'm in Arizona and it's in the 40's in the morning right now. A bit too chilly for just a performance t-shirt. That's where this pullover works perfectly. But where it REALLY shines is its moisture wicking capability. I sweat like crazy and this does an amazzzzing job at keeping me warm AND dry. Patagonia knocked this one outta the park. Not exactly inexpensive as far as pullovers are concerned, but well worth its weight. Highly recommended!
Much smaller than original R1
I own three original R1 pullovers and I think they're the greatest things ever. I wear them every day. I was very excited to buy the thinner, cozier version of the pullover I love so much. It's great, well-made, and looks really nice as it is, but the color was a little more orange than it looks on the website, and it was much smaller than the original R1. I returned it in exchange for a large. Maybe it's because of the material, but I'd recommending sizing up.
Great so far
So far so good. Like the other reviews say, it does run pretty slim so I would recommend sizing up if you want to wear anything under it. I used it on a 16 mile mountain hike in 25-40 degree temperatures and it was perfect. I went back and forth between just the fleece and a light base layer, and adding a light puffy hoody depending on whether or not we were moving.
excellent mid layer option.
Love the r1 air and it’s fits my needs perfectly. I originally purchased the r1 but it was a bit too snug for me and constricting in the arms when layered. I swapped out for the r1 air and couldn’t be happier. So far it’s seen light spring use but layered over a capilene tee and under a Houdini can keep you covered for a nice early ride or jog. Jacket does a great job of dumping excess heat but keeping you comfortable. I also took it fishing and on a windy lake layered under an atom LT I was totally comfortable. This is a versatile piece that I can’t wait to test in the fall and winter with other activities. If you’re a Patagonia loyalist you need this piece. If you are an active person with stop start activities, you need this piece.
Amazing Sweater and Layering Piece-Size Up 1 Size
Incredible light weight piece with a lot of warmth and so soft to the touch. I purchased this for a stand alone sweater to wear indoors (WFH Life!) and to layer with a vest outdoors in fall months as it gets colder. The sizing is really small on this piece. I am a size M in the Patagonia Down Jacket and Down Vest and almost all other Brands. 5'9, 175pnds. I went large and it fits perfect. Length wise, there isn't much diff in the arms or body length going M to L but there is a considerable diff in the chest area. I rec. sizing up.
Worked as intended, but didn’t hold up in the wash
I liked this item and used it as a baselayer/midlayer for skiing. For this purpose, it worked very well and was decently warm, especially given its lightness. However, for daily use, it attracted lots of snags and dust, and after a few cycles through the washer, the fabric became pretty rough. Not necessarily uncomfortable, but just rough and not nearly as soft as it was new. Disappointing after only a few washes. On the plus side, it doesn’t shrink as it’s polyester. Ended up returning, though, to replace with something softer that holds up better.
Poor fit, warmer than expected
I typically love Patagonia products, but this one was a genuine miss for me. My build: 6’2, 185 lbs, chest 41”. Wear a M in all of my other fleeces. They fit comfortably (not tight) over a T. On the advice of others, I bought this one in L. It fits glove tight, uncomfortable and surprising. I would exchange for a larger size to get some breathing room, but then the sleeves would be far too long. Also, while the actual weight (in ounces) of the fleece is indeed lightweight, this is not a light fleece relative to warmth. Far too warm to wear indoors and I don't carry much body fat. Would call it medium and that’s due to the texture of the weave which is like a waffle effect trapping body heat. Too warm for indoors and not what i wanted. I’ll be returning.
