Long time Salomon user. Got to say I'm not impressed with the X Ultra 4s. The good is the toe box is a little bigger, I don't need it but I'm sure many do. The bad centers around the heel section of the shoe. First it is extremely tall compared to the XA Pros. It rides high on the heel. Worse, it took almost no time for the heel cup to start poking thru the back and digging into my heel. (included pics of heal cup vs tread wear). I normally wear my XA Pros until the tread is nearly flat then relegate them to yard work. Not possible with these short lived shoes. Save your money, go with the XA Pros, these X Ultras are very low quality.
I bought this in April, 2022 and the soles are already wearing through on the heels and forefoot. The rubber compound is soft, which may be the reason for the premature wear. I’ve had other Salomons that I’ve had for over six years that have better soles than this shoe. I like Salomons but highly dissapointed in the quality of this one. Is there a resole option for this shoe since I still like the fit and would like to continue wearing this shoe?
Thank you for your feedback. Here, at Salomon, we always appreciate hearing what customers have to say about our products! We´re sorry to hear about the issue with the product. Please, expect to be contacted shortly by our team, we would like to help in any way we can!
I've hiked Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, AZ USA every day for well over a decade (6 miles, 2,400 ft elevation). It's the toughest urban hike in America (in the middle of the city). The terrain is all granite, rough, and it shreds shoes like a meat grinder. I've tried many brands and styles and ONLY the XA PRO 3D holds up with both grip on the steep rocks and long-lasting tread. I recommend them to everyone! Analysis: Merrills hold up but don't grip as well; I've seen Brooks delaminate in less than 100 miles; Hoka and La Sportiva don't hold up.
These shoes are super comfy for what I assume would be casual, every day use but I really wouldn’t know since I returned mine after the first day. I went on a brief walk to test them out and within minutes my toes were coated with silt and fine sand. The shoes still looked clean and new as well (pics below). Any long hike anywhere near sand would mean rubbing your toes raw, no fun. Out of the package these looked and felt cheap, akin to my $50 New Balance running shoes. I had a pair of older X Ultras that went to hades and back for 2 years as daily drivers, approach shoes, and hiking shoes until they got retired for whitewater kayaking shoes. This new design doesn’t seem like it would withstand half as much. I hate these shoes.
I purchased this pair of shoes as I work in some of the harshest terrain around the world. From the tundra in the arctic to the desert in Austrilia I depend on the Salomon brand for support of my feet to the gore tex to keep them dry. The last job I wore them was in a swampy muddy area in Northern Canada in a camp. I forgot my muck boots and these shoes kept my feet dry all day walking in mud. Hands down an awesome shoe and I still have them and continue to wear them after a good wash they look like new.
I’ve owned 3 pairs of Salomon hiking shoes over four years and the quality gets worse with every new pair I buy. These are tearing in multiple places after one season of hiking, the rubber tab on the lace system slides off all the time, and they just feel and fit like a much cheaper shoe compared to the of x ultra 3 Aeros I owned previously. My girlfriend has the same pair (woman’s version) and they are falling apart in the same spots as mine. I like the tread, lacing, and look of salomons but I will never buy another pair. They feel engineered to fall apart/ be disposable and I’ll buy something more durable next time.
This was my first pair of Salomon shoes and was really impressed with them at first. They're comfortable and I really like the quick lace system. However, after roughly 150 miles in them they have developed big holes near the heel of the shoe right by the pull tab. REI and Salomon said that this was considered normal wear and tear, but I've never had a pair of shoes start to fall apart like that with so few miles and with the tread being largely intact.
I've been buying Salomons for over a decade. Some shoes have been good and some have been great. I like the fact that most of their shoes do not need a real break in period. I can start wearing right out of the box. This particular style has not disappointed. It's comfortable and light for me. I feel it was true to size. I've only been wearing for a few weeks but I waiting to see the durability. Some have lasted longer but I always rotate between the shoes I have. The only negative I have is the "laces" is a little long. When I have to tuck it into the tongue of the shoe, a lot of the lace still sticks out. Otherwise a great shoe.
First things first, I haven’t experience any Achilles rubbing problems in these shoes since I’ve had them. I’ve been on enough hikes on/off trail now to be able to report any issues to that respect, and there hasn’t been any. I’ve been a long time fan of the x ultra 3’s and was skeptical of this new version. Fit on the 4’s is a little different. There’s more room in the toe box (but not overly so), but I still feel like they fit similar to the 3’s in the heel and mid foot. I like the addition of the big “wing” (or whatever you want to call it) on the outside of the shoe, it supports the foot well on off camber terrain and probably strengthens the lacing system a bit since it uses a plastic guide for the lace to sit on instead of just nylon webbing. As for breathability, these shoes seem slightly more breathable than the 3’s because of the slightly bigger toe box. The mesh also seems different, hopefully it will be just as durable as the 3’s mesh. It’s still early to tell on the durability of these shoes, but I’ve had good experiences with Salomon’s in that regard so I don’t expect these to be any different. I think the only drawback I can find so far is as others have stated, it can be annoying to tuck in the quick lace into the tongue since it’s a little short, but it’s not a huge deal and find the upper stays in place well. I usually wear around 11.5/12 and I got the 12’s on these and they fit great.
