If osprey was bulky/awkward for you, get this!

If you don’t enjoy how high and far away the osprey sits then this is the baby carrying hiking backpack for you! So much less backpack to lug around in a good way and the way the baby’s weight is distributed near your core is much better. Also so much better for differing sizes of people. If you plan on actually hiking any terrain or inclines or going through any low hanging tree areas, this backpack is way better for that.

Exposed frame makes for uncomfortable ride
Katie
My husband was taken with the color. Because he is the one carrying the baby and not me, and because we have bought other products made by thule and been pleased with them, I agreed. even though it was never mentioned in the top three best baby backpack lists that I spent So much time filtering through. Our toddler was being a madman at the store so we bought this backpack, which was the most expensive one by about $75, and waited until we got home to try it out. We put the baby in it for a walk to the park a few blocks away. Pretty immediately he started saying “ow” and rubbing his head and we realized that with just about every step he would hit his head on the exposed metal frame behind him. I just can’t imagine how this was a good design choice. We knew there was no way we could make this work on our strenuous hike we had planned at rainier. So my husband had to run back to the store and switch it out for an Osprey poco plus which we have been very pleased with. The Thule looked cool, but that’s about the best thing I can say. The rest of the features were just ok. you have to attach the sunshade yourself, there are no foot rest, storage Seemed a bit of an afterthought. I would’ve expected much much more out of a product that cost so much ($430) and has such a reputable brand name behind it. I just can’t get over that stupid design.

Great child carrier!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Very excited about the Thule Sapling – it’s the perfect ride for our 30lb toddler. It has great support for both child and parent, with numerous points of adjustments that can be tailored to taller (and shorter) carriers. The weight is well distributed, making it easy to maintain balance while wearing the pack. It’s also well ventilated and comfortable for everyone to wear even on longer outings, and I really like the kickstand on the back that turns it into an impromptu seat when it’s time for a snack or sitting around the fire. The gear compartment is nicely sized (22L) with easy access even while in use, and there are handy front pouches at the waist for smaller items (keys, phone, snacks). Highly recommend!

Broke on our first hike

I was really excited to try out our new Thule Sapling baby carrier. We did a test run at the shop and it seemed very comfortable. Unfortunately the carrier broke on our first outing! Baby's seat is "secured" by a plastic clip that allows you to adjust the height of the seat. This is a major design flaw as this tiny clip takes the full weight of the baby and is clearly not strong enough. The seat clip broke and our son dropped to the bottom of the carrier. He is 12kg so is nowhere near the upper weight limit for the carrier (20kg). The quality is not at all what I expected from a brand like Thule and it's not a cheap carrier. We've returned this and I would advise parents not to waste their money on this product.

Hello Nicola! I'm so sorry to hear about the damage to your Thule Sapling! I hope your child was safe throughout the ordeal. I completely understand your frustration with the situation. Damage such as this would usually be covered under Thule's limited lifetime warranty. I reached out via email for some more information, and to discuss what we can do to help resolve the situation.

Excellent pack with opportunities for improvement

After trying out multiple packs, this was the only one that was simple to handle and our little 11 months seemed to sit naturally in. She was so comfy she showed me she gets excited when I bring the bag, and she falls asleep easily while walking. Lots of adjustability, fits most bodies unless you're too skinny. The only pack where the main compartment doesn't have a flap leaning backwards, so the content doesn't fall out, but instead reachable from both sides. There are some flaws and improvement areas: 1. The sunshade hits my head when walking, so I have to lean my head forward or let the sunshade pich my hat off. Would be nice if it wasn't reaching so far to the front. 2. The frame behind the baby's head is bare, should be covered by soft material. I wrap it with a scarf when the baby doesn't wear a thicker hat. If the baby is bumped in the wrong way, it'll hit its head. 3. I'd love some place to put a bottle or thermos, maybe a pocket for the chest strap or right behind the back. 4. The waist strap could allow for thinner people. I'm wearing the bag properly but I need to adjust the strap to it's shortest position, only then it sits fine. I'm not big, but def not thin either, 176cm and 80kg male. These are flaws I can work my way around, considering that the competition is just so far behind on usability, ease of use, and good seating position for the kid. Well done Thule! Get these upgrades done and you'll add even more value :)

the best baby carrier for hiking

Have tried a couple of carriers from different brands. Thule sapling is the best one! Our baby likes it. I'm super happy with its design, even though it's not the finalist of IF design.

Truly amazing!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am so happy with this product! First off it is beautiful and I am obsessed with the color! It is so well made and extremely comfortable. My baby is around 20 pounds and she is so happy in this backpack and I can wear it for extended periods of time. I love that is has a stand and all of the pockets are so convienent! The only downfall I will say is the sun shade had directions on how to fold it to store it and after folding it as advised it does not snap back into shape quite right. I would recommend not folding it at all because now it’s kind of off kilter and I can’t get the wire to bend back. Otherwise it is perfect and definitely worth it!!

Best carrier, nothing else comfortable

We tried two other carriers before we discovered this one. This is the first one my son was actually comfortable enough to sit in for longer than 20 minutes. It's a more natural position sitting then awkward crotch support/ standing, super stable, haven't had the issues noted by someone else about the frame getting in the way (they may not have been aware of the multiple ways this seat and the straps/backpack could be adjusted). Going on 3 years and I'm bummed he's about to outgrow it in terms of weight. Has been used/borrowed comfortably by a range of people, many who then decided to buy it to replace theirs.

Excellent Pack Versatile Pack

My partner and I have been using the Thule Sapling for just over six weeks and we have nothing but great things to say about it! We have a 24 pound youngster who loves to be on the move. We use the pack a least once a day if not more. It's ideal for doing activities around the house, however, it's even better for hiking. The pack easily adjusts for different body sizes/types and is incredibly comfortable. Our little dude is also very comfortable and content anytime he gets to ride in the pack. We've tried other packs that don't hold a candle to this one. The only complaint is that we didn't purchase this pack sooner. We highly recommend this product.

The GOAT

We struggled for over a year to get our daughter to fall in love with hiking in a pack. Other carriers from prominent companies just weren't cutting it. Leave it to Thule to change the game and improve things 10 fold. This pack is phenomenal. It's much lighter than many others on the market; VERY comfortable for mom/dad; and most importantly... amazing for our daughter. Rather than forcing the kid to sit vertical, it places the rider in a more-seated position. Our daughter loved it from first hike. We went from tears to happily hiking several miles. Thank you, Thule.

Clip broke!

I really loved this carrier for the first 3 day hikes we took our baby on, until the main clip that holds the seating area on BROKE. It was really scary, and weird because our babe is less than 20lbs. I bought it at MEC (Canada) and can't return it. Super bummed out as it wasn't cheap. Hoping this doesn't happen to anyone else.
