Solid ride, but not for serious urban use

I really wanted to love this bike. The ride and suspension are great. Solid brake and shifting setup. The electric assist is very smooth, albeit limited being a Class 1. It's a heavy bike, so if the battery dies or you want to roll without the battery/assist, recognize you're piloting a boat - and it feels like it. All the people at the store that helped me out with it were GREAT. I've been an REI customer for many years and always appreciate the attentive and gracious service. Unfortunately, this bike was not for me. The reasons I returned it came down to 3 major factors: #1. The color is not like the product description. It looks bright orange/red in the photos, it's actually more like a sun faded mix of pastel orange and coral pink. #2. The handlebar is super wide. If you want this for cycling in a serious urban environment where there is a lot of traffic and your travel lane is at times pretty narrow, it's a major liability. #3. If you remove the battery, the metal electrical connection/internals are wide open. So basically, if you want to lock up outside and take the battery with you, the weather better be good or you need to devise a system to cover the downtube and prevent rain/snow/dirt/etc. I commute ~50 miles/week in New York City and this bike would not survive the rigors of this environment and the ever present opportunistic theft threat. If you have more mellow needs and don't have to lock it up outside, or you live in a place where it's less of a potential problem to do so, it might work out well for you.

Fun high value rear hub e-bike by REI

First day 17miles in! Initial feeling is it's super fun! Pros: -Ease of use -Very comfortable ride -Ride modes are fun -Range +50-60 miles per computer on ECO, and sub ten miles in TURBO! Cons: - Weight (shockingly heavy! lol) - Wide handlebars - could catch onto an object if not mindful - Computer can be hard to read in direct sunlight - Picture color doesnt match 1:1 from online to in person So far so good, time will tell if the unit can hold up to the miles.

Extremely Helpful!

REI sales associates were extremely helpful. I spoke with the Kalispell store and the Store in Missoula. Both women associates were very knowledgeable and understood my preferences. I’m over 70 years. I was treated as a serious customer. They respected my apprehension of owning an E bike and listened to my concerns. The information they gave lead to my purchase of the Co op e bike! I love it! It fits me perfectly and is easy to use. I can use the pedal assist only when I need it. I can get a workout too! I’m looking forward to a summer of many bike rides and exploration. Thank you for your help.

Great bike

I shopped for a very long time and this bike checks all the boxes. It’s as heavy as #%^* but all things considered I love it. The controls are easy. Too small but easy. It’s gets the distance indicated in the owners manual. The front shocks are nice. Not standard on many bikes. I love the color. The seat is comfortable after you get used to it. No rear taillight which I thought was weird. The frame size is spot on for me. (Small) The handlebars are really wide but you get used to it. Everything on the bike is easily tweaked to customize to arms and hands. Ive ridden almost 200 miles in two weeks and have been paying attention to everything. I’ll get my free REI adjustment soon. I’m happy. Test ride it.

Simple, yet effective!

Gorgeous looking bike. Better in person. So this bike is electric assist. It has 4 bike modes ranging from eco to turbo. Eco estimated 52 miles of range and turbo 11 miles. There is also a manual mode with 8 gears. So if you want to use the bike as just a bike then it’s a wonderful feature as the other bikes I test ride did not have that capability. It’s an electric assist, so there’s no throttle. The electric assist is very responsive and smooth and works immediately. No jolting as of yet. The key locking battery is removable for portable charging or security. Really smooth ride. The front shocks are a little soft, but I probably need to adjust them or lock them out for flat surfaces. Bike weighs 51 lbs as is, so super manageable. I also like the sleek no top tube look. It is easier to get on and off without looking silly. I also am adding a rear rack and child seat, so the no top tube will allow for easier mounting when the child is strapped in. So far this is comfortable and smooth. 7 hours to charge a full battery which isn’t bad considering it may go 52+ miles. Comes with a built in kickstand and disc brakes which are superior. This is a class 1 bike so it does top out at 20mph but I can pedal to go a little faster without motor assistance. 28mph would have been more appropriate for this bike, but Oo well. Anyways. Yes I fully recommend so far.

Disappointed

Bought this bike in May. I started having issues with the gearing in August, with the lowest gears skipping and the 6 - 8 gears being clunky and harsh when changing gears. The chain broke in October, and I haven't made it in to REI yet to see what my options are. My first impression of the bike was that handlebars are much wider than expected, making handling somewhat awkward. After putting 965 miles on the bike, the battery range seems to be at least 30% diminished, and the power output is nothing like it was initially.

Battery degrades quickly

Overall its a decent bike. The ride is smooth and the controls are easy to use. I have had the bike for 6 month and have logged about 700 miles on it. T first few months with the bike were great but primary issue is the rapid degradation of the battery life. When I first got the bike I could complete my 20 mile roundtrip commute in turbo and still have two bars of battery life left. Now, I'm lucky if I can get 15 miles before its completely dead. Its really disappointing considering how great the bike was at first.

Better than I hoped for. Excellent e-bike.

Very happy with this e-bike. Like it much better than bikes I previously owned. Feels solid and has responsive steering. Battery has been holding its charge well and I don't need to worry about running out of boost (I only very rarely have to take it above the "eco" setting). Wish the computer display was a bit bigger, but not a major issue. Would buy this again.

Decent e-bike for city use

The bike is decent, but it has no cargo basket or frame on the back, and for the price, I would expect closer to 500 Watts. The power is alright, but when I had to go up a steep hill, even the turbo maximum level boost did not provide as much assist as I hoped for. The bike is made for city roads, which is what I use it for. It would not fare well on gravel or off-road.

Ultimate comfort bike for longer rides.

Great value for a class 1 ebike with a front shock. Bought my wife an ebike 2 years ago and have been experiencing ebike envy. I want an affordable bike that is comfortable on 20+ mile rides. REI finally produced the answer with the City e2.1. I’ve already put almost 100 miles on this bike with no complaints and multiple complements.
