This bottle works, but it has two issues : it is heavy and it takes a lot of strength to use. In order to process water I have to put it on something lower than my hips, the use both ands an all my body weight to push it down. If I have a towel handy I out that over the top to cushion my hands. It may be great for a big, strong man, but as a small person I find it difficult.

Great for long days spend near water!

This water bottle has been perfect for working on a glacial drainage system all summer. No more hauling around multiple water bottles! It cleared out the silt and left me with cool, clean, delicious water. Easy to use and bottle does not leak. I recommend this to anyone who will be spending long days near a water system.

Covert Edition

The Grayl UltraPress Purifier - Covert Edition features four muted color schemes which are perfect for travel, work, or outdoors recreating. The 16.9 ounce bottle offers a low profile fitting into most backpack/bag side pockets as well as vehicle cup holders. And the One Press system has a simplistic ease of use that puts all other water treatment companies to shame - no more pumping/squeezing carpal tunnel inducing torture for me! Grayl UltraPress is a product that I’m sure to keep reaching for all year long for water purification. I do wonder about the longevity of the purification cartridge which is reason for the reduction of one star. Overall excited for this new piece of gear.

A Total Dud

I bought this a month ago, had high hopes but before long it just stopped working. So disappointed. I was trying it out at home with chlorinated tap water. It worked great for about three days, about 4 - 5 times each day. It got really hard to push, then wouldn’t push, made big messes, water everywhere but inside the cup. I took it apart, let it dry thoroughly for a few days but nothing changed. Completely unreliable, inconveniently heavy, lots of plastic involved. and expensive to maintain. I had a replacement filter but didn’t bother. Unsustainable. Returned it. I do have an MSR Guardian Purifier, which is much more sustainable, shareable, and works perfectly.

Bought two. Both leaked.

Purchased two Grayl ultrapress filtering water bottles and used off and on during a trip to Sicily. One bottle leaked from the start. The second bottle leaked after a few days. Nothing we tried would stop the leaks. Both were hard to press and never worked. Outrageously priced, plastic garbage. Disappointed REI would sell such a defective product. Do not recommend.

Relief to always have safe water

I bought this both for travel and in case my home well pump ever conks out. It is a simple, compact design that is super easy to use and I like being able to add electrolytes. A BADLY NEEDED DESIGN IMPROVEMENT is a way to keep the small cap attached. I was carrying this purifier in a side pocket of my backpack when I was walking through the airport and I saw the cap roll off down the floor - CRITICAL loss if I had not seen it! It should be attached! Also, the locking ring for the cartridge can be tricky to keep "unlocked" when taking the cartridge on/off - not critical, just a pain.

Filter clogged in 4 days. Good for Crossfit WOD.

After a four days, four nights hike in the Wind River Range the filter is taking 20-25 seconds, not the ten seconds claimed. Pressing the filter now takes all my strength, standing and doing a squat. I used only clear stream water and I was the only person who used the filter. The instructions say to replace the filter when it takes 25 seconds. Crossfit could use these for workouts. I've used my UV purifier for 10+ years with no problems and no filters to replace. I bought the Grayl thinking it would be better with silty or swampy water. I have no doubt that's true but filters for the Grayl are going to cost many times more than the device.

First outing with my UltraPress

First outing with my UltraPress in Uganda last week. Same outstanding Grayl standards I’m used to… superb addition to the range. Loved it. Clean drinking water every day!

Best I’ve tried!

I haven’t used this in the field yet, however the outer shell is tough. I work in a warehouse and have dropped it a couple of times. It stayed together and didn’t leak. This device is so simple to use: fill thought container, press the filter down forcing the water through and drink. Admittedly, it takes some pressure to get the filter all the way to the bottom, but it is doable. I did take it with me to a restaurant to filter their water. My filtered water tasted distinctly better than my partner’s. All-in-all this seems to be about as perfect a portable water filter as can be made. I’m very pleased with the purchase and expect to purchase more.

11/16/23: Having Girardia on a Long Trail, I know value of really, really super clean water. This item, when correctly used, although pricey, solves water issues for me easily. Also purchased an extra filter. However, the cap? This model does not have a method attaching the cap. Why? This, to me, especially at this price, is a design problem and could very easily and super cheaply be factory installed on ALL their bottles. Otherwise, highly recommend.
