Guidance that makes sense.

The idea of voice guidance makes total sense. In an emergency where lives are at stake voice guidance that is calm, concise and direct has shown to cut through the brain freeze that can happen to even the most experienced professionals. I work as an ER nurse and ski patroller and have seen this many times and this is one of the reasons that automatic external defibrillators use clear, simple voice commands to prompt the rescuer. Ortovox has taken beacon rescue technology up a notch with this beacon. The voice guidance it provides is calm, direct, and easy to follow no matter how high your heart rate. The great thing about it is that they did not stop there. This beacon is packed with all of the top of the line technology that is becoming standard for today's avalanche beacons to be declared worthy. This is the beacon I want in my partner's hands if things ever go wrong.

Great All-Around Beacon/transceiver Choice

I've used several different brands and models of beacons/transceivers over the years. This is my first season with the new Diract. So far, so good. I know of one other transceiver that has a slightly longer range, but once this one picks up the range, it locks on reliably and takes you straight to the source. While the voice instructions may seem goofy, particularly for advanced users, I've taken avi courses up to the Pro 2 (previously Level 3) and I still think the basic coaching could be useful. In emergencies, everything gets ramped up, so it's nice to have a calm voice keeping you on track. The functionality of it seems well-thought out, with a simple and mostly glove-friendly interface (the on/off button is a bit small for thick gloves). The rechargeable battery is a huge plus--no worries, as it has plenty of life for extended backcountry trips--and it eliminates the typical need to change batteries, look out for compartment corrosion, carry spare batteries, etc. The Diract also has a function for multiple burial scenarios and this function works well; however, I am unaware of a way to unmask a "marked" burial. In reality, you can simply turn it from search back to send, then back to search, and that works fine in most of the practice scenarios I've been doing, but an "unmask" function could be good for future versions. All-in-all, it's the simplicity of this device that sells it. Simple is good in high-stress, high-consequence situations and the Diract hits that goal well.

Revolutionary Beacon

This beacon is truly incredible - the highlighted voice navigation is calming (even while running drills) and lets you look for visual clues for an avalanche victim which is so so helpful. All the other features are top-notch to boot, even if the voice is getting all the attention. I love the USB recharging since throwing away AAA batteries every year is just so wasteful.

You’re lucky to own this!

There is no other product on the market like it. I’ve been using it for months. I’ve also been using it while teaching avalanches classes. It’s a very impressive piece of rescue gear. ORTOVOX has a phenomenal warranty program which takes the worry away when buying an expensive product. This company has your back 100% of the time!

Range is 40 meters - not 50!

I was told by Ortovox the unit range is 40 meters - not the 50 meters stated. In field testing, the best I received was 40 meters, more often around 38 meters. Otherwise, I really like this unit in every other aspect. The features and feel are nice. The orange switch between send and search is solid. Doesn't feel like it could inadvertently flip to search if caught in an avalanche. I hope Ortovox considers increasing the range in future versions of this model.

Great Beacon

It is easy to operate and very intuitive. The battery stays fully charged for multiple days of use before the need to recharge, but still would recommend to charge after each use for the piece of mind. I haven't had to use it in search mode outside of buddy checks and the occasional practice search, but it picks up the signal of other beacons quickly and the commands are easy to follow.
