Great for active pursuits
I've loved this warm jacket for 2 years now - perfect for frigid Wisconsin winters and hiking, cross-country skiing & outdoor activities. It's lightweight and I love the flexibility in the shoulders. Unfortunately, I recently had a run-in with some thorny branches, and the fabric suffered small punctures/small tears. I repaired the holes with clear stick-on patches, but they still leaked feathers, so I ended up stitching it, so it is now my "Frankenstein jacket". I still love this jacket but will watch for a sale to eventually replace it. Consider wearing a sturdy shell on top to protect it from tears if you're going to do any backcountry skiing.
Want to love it.
This coat fits a muscular build very well, which I love! My one complaint is active women beware: the mustard color has stained permanently from sweat after 1 moderate ski tour. I am not a particularly sweaty person, the color or the fabric seems to discolor very easily and all of my stain removal methods have failed. I cannot wear in public anymore which is a shame because its so cute!
Great first year, then cold shoulders
The jacket performed fantastically the first year after purchase: warm, light, stretchy with movement. The the down started to move downward with gravity, as the boxes of down fill aren't completely sealed off. Now there is no down on the shoulders, so the jacket is useless as an outerwear.
No down in shoulder area
I love everything about this jacket! It has a great fit, looks good outdoors and in the city, is lightweight, and has sturdy zippers. However, the down has traveled over time so now there's no down left around the shoulders, and I mean none. I've shaken it, hung it upside down, all to no avail. Unfortunately, the jacket is now useless which is a shame, as I really loved it!
So very disappointed
Bought this jacket a year ago. Needed to wash it due to being dragged through the mud by the dog. Pulled it from (front-loading, as instructed) washer to find all of the quilted stitching that keeps the down in position was gone. All of it. All insulation at bottom hem. Honestly, I cried. Will never buy Mountain Hardware products again.
Cute, warm, comfy, durable
I have a lightweight down that is great, but feels too fragile for anything other than sitting at camp. I wanted something more durable but just as warm and more water-resistant that I could use for skiing. Honestly I thought this was a synthetic coat, which would also solve the problem of water. Turns out it’s still down (the name should’ve tipped me off haha!), but it IS more durable! And I walked my dog in a drizzle and it held up well there too. It’s a bit heavy but that’s the trade off of durability. I’m also petite athletic at 5’2 with stronger arms and it fits to form without drowning me. I think I got the XS. Overall, I’m happy!
Would be 5 stars if MH brought back DWR
This jacket has almost everything I was looking for in a flexible outer/mid layer: moderate warmth, hem cinch, hood cinch (seemingly rare!), and chest pocket (also rare). I absolutely love the stretch fabric as well. It has a good amount of give yet is durable. The cut of the shoulders and chest is also well designed for climbing and activities requiring mobile limbs: not loose, not tight, and accommodates broader shoulders and back. Mountain Hardwear's stretch down is by far the best version I've tried, including the Rab and Stio ones. A minor drawback is the sleeve cinch design, which is very loose and lets all of the cold air in. The elastic is seated 1 cm behind the end of the sleeve, so the extra puff and fabric rubs against your wrist and gets pretty dirty very quickly. The major design flaw: I do not understand why this jacket line no longer has DWR. Not only does down need moisture protection, but the lack of a protective coating on this matte fabric makes it much more prone to getting dirty as well. An older version of the Stretchdown line (until 2018, I believe) did have DWR, but Mountain Hardwear got rid of it. Please bring it back and I will buy it! As for sizing, I'm normally between XS and S (5'6" and 125 lb) in Mountain Hardwear tops and bottoms, and this was no exception.
cold sleeve cuffs
I’m 5’8” 180. Size 14 top 38DD size pants 10/12 hip 42” the sleeves were barely long enough for my arms, but the stretch fabric at the cuffs wasn’t closed enough and cold drafts in 35 degree weather just blew right up my forearms. The fit was good throughout the shoulders and chest but it flared out at the hips a bit too much for me. Will probably fit nice someone with more ample hips. The fabric felt stiff and cold out of the box and didn’t feel warm quickly enough. I tried it on outside, i suppose there was plenty of room to wear thick layers under for extra cozy.
Not worth
I bought this jacket because my husband got the same one a while back and he was so pleased how warm it was. I am not sure whether the quality has gone down since the pandemic, but mine had very little down in it, and I can definitely feel cold in it in weather -5to10C in it, someone would definitely need to pick up a wind proof jacket in addition to this one for better protection. I do own other down jackets that are definitely warmer/ more insulating than this one. I would not recommend it for the price unless you are going only for the looks. Definitely not worth the full price advertised. It looks good, and the colour is trendy, but not high quality. In the picture the botanic jacket looks like a deep teal. It’s actually more of a faded green ( the jacket on the girl in the video is more similar to the colour I received)
Love This Jacket!
Love this jacket. Quality is great as is the warmth. It’s light and allows for layering beneath without being bulky.
