Very functional - a few tweaks could help.

I purchased these for a backpacking trip in the mountains, wanting a rugged bottom that could shrug off most small thorns and shrubs, give me a warm hike in cool/cold weather, and give me the movement needed for uphill, downhill, and some moderate scrambles. I sized up from my usual 6/8 to a size 10 because I wanted room for movement and "big steps" in the mountain terrain. It was a good decision. If you're on the fence about sizing-- order one size up. I found them to be really well adapted to hiking in the backcountry! A few items I thought were great: 1. The drawstring waist combats the "stretched out" feel of most leggings on day 2 or 3 of wear in the backcountry, avoiding any sagging. I had no need to yank them back up mid-hike, unlike some other styles. Great addition. 2. Super functional cargo pockets are low profile but large enough to hold what I needed - phone (in its case) on the right leg for photo ops, and a few small items in the left pocket like fruit leather and drink powder. Zippers have hardware large enough to use while wearing gloves, which was much appreciated, but fold flat against the pants for a no-snag and no-hassle flattened position when not in use. 3. Great color choices. The green is really nice. The durable fabric held up well to sitting on all manner of surfaces -- leaf litter, pea gravel, river rock, boulders, sand, and dirt with out becoming frayed, soiled, or that fuzzy look we all remember from swimsuit bottoms at the community pool. Remember that? That didn't happen. Good choice of material. It still has stretch, bit it isn't TOO soft. Changes I would recommend: 1. Reverse the zipper hardware on the front of the abdomen so the the "zipped-closed" position has the zipper head down and away from the waist. I had to hike with the pockets unzipped to keep the zipper heads out from underneath where the hip belt of my pack would pressurize them into being little hot-spots. 2. Incorporate a back-of-the-leg closure (zipper? Hook and loop? Or maybe simply more stretch?) so that I could have an easier time getting them up to (and maybe over) my knees for creek crossings. That was super difficult to slide them up over my calves and back down wet skin on the other side of the water. 3. I'd love to have this in a sedate rusty orange color - thinks Sedona Arizona rocks. Overall I was very pleased with the bottoms, and I think just a few adjustments could make them a really really excellent choice. Right now, they're a very good choice with almost no downsides.

Not that great for hiking

The back of the pants is a different fabric. It is thin, stretchy and not water resistant at all. I'm afraid of sliding down the boulder on my butt with these pants. It would be great if Athleta made the pants out of the fabric in the front which is much more rugged. I'm 5'3", 26" waist, 36" hip. Both sizes 0 and 2 fit comfortably, but there is always some obvious bunching around the knees. Length wise, the petite is too short, the regular is 1/2" too long.

These are sick

I'm a chunky 5'4" 175 lb monkey. These fit perfectly. They're snug in all the right places, and stretchy where they need to be. They're high waisted to prevent belly spillage and they're super flexible. I did some little tests lifting my leg up as if I were hiking steep-ily and it didn't fill tight at all, it flexed with the movement. Haven't been hiking in them yet but I don't expect any problems! It's also great that you can wear them casually since they look so nice.

Love these pants!

So glad REI started carrying these! I had trouble finding a stylish slim fit pant with pockets that fit my phone. Gave these a try and had to get another pair. I’m 5’2 about 105lbs and got these in a 0 Petite from Athleta and it was perfect. These are my go to pants for traveling so that I don’t have to bring a purse, plenty of pockets to fit all my stuff and still looks great. Took these zip lining, hiking, camping, night out for drinks and they were comfortable with zip pockets to keep everything secured!

Pear Beware! But otherwise nice leggings.

Very pear shaped so I ordered a size up (16) based on other reviews and they were an awful fit. They were tight in the calves but saggy elsewhere and I looked like a Canadian Mountie. Saddle Bag City. I wound up trying the next size down, my usual size (14), but the pockets on these leggings still made me look just a little pouchy. So I sized down again (12) and liked the result. I think maybe these pants look good at different sizes depending on body type. If I was a more athletic build I think going with a looser fit (my normal size) would be fine but my pear shape meant a slightly loose legging looked comical. Otherwise, they’re great leggings for hiking or just wearing. I like them a lot!

Awesome Athleta Pants - Absolute Favorite!

I went to REI for new warmer or legging pants. After trying on more than a dozen pair, the Athleta Headlands Hybrid Cargo II Tights fit and looked best so I bought a pair. Love fit, comfort, fabric and high rise waist. These are now my absolute favorite pants. I bought a second pair within the week. I’m waiting for a coupon to get a third pair. I can do my Pilates/Yoga and run around all day. No bagging. Amazing fit! They hug me! Feel warm but never hot and sweaty. Won’t disappoint. High rise/natural waist version only found (by me) at REI. Regular store as mid-rise. If you like high rise - these are wonderful. Love these!!!! Washed well.

Great Pants; few minor adjustments

Just tested these on a 34 mile backpacking trip on the Benton Mackaye. Great fit and performance. Love the higher waist WITH DRAWSTRING - THANK YOU !!!! Super comfortable and fabric took the briars and sliding over downed trees like a champ. Love the 6 pockets, BUT not all of them should be zippered. The 2 large thigh pockets, which I used for my phone (navigation, photos) should have a flap and velcro - zipper can't be closed with a phone in there and it can scratch the screen. The "regular" pockets don't need a big heavy zipper either - hurts your hands. Back pockets are fine - small zippers. I would ADD zippers to the ankles - ventilation, etc. Overall , would definitely recommend

Flattering and practical

Love these pants! They're flattering and wear well. I have had mine for over a year and would wear them every day; but I don't want to wear the out. So, I went to buy a 2nd pair because when you love a pair of pants, you should always buy two! I had a fit when I couldn't find my size on Athleta's site, but so grateful and delighted to find them at REI. Buy these flattering and practical pants. The waist is comfortable and not too high (I dislike high-waisted pants); and the tapered ankle length is just right - not too short. I wear them for casual, day wear and work. I think they're too nice to wear as hikers, but the pockets are super handy. I'm 5'4" and 115lbs. Buy them, you won't regret it!

All Time Favorite Pants

Love these pants. I loved the black pair so much I ordered the olive. These are so comfortable, functional and stylish. I have no desire to wear any other pants. I am 5'8", 148 lbs. I normally wear size M/8 but I wanted these to fit more like pants and not like tighter leggings. I ordered the size 10 and they are perfect. The pockets are stylish - sleek and functional and they go from outdoor activities to classy, casual gathering. They almost have a riding pant look and feel. Great with boots and flats. If I can find one more color, I'll probably get them. Can't rave about them enough.

Almost my favorite

There are already lots of good reviews for these. Here is what I would have wanted to know: I usually wear an 8. The 8 in these had a tight (like hard to pull over hips) waist band, but the rest felt snug and comfortable like leggings. I decided I didn’t want to struggle with the waistband while stopping for a wee out on the trail. I got a 10. They are comfortable BUT the knees and butt stretch out and sag as the day wears on. Not a huge issue, but would have been cool to know. The fabric is definitely great for rough wear. I scrambled and slid on ricks with zero damage. These were very good in cooler temps (even down to 32) and too warm when in the 70s. Love LOVE love all the big pockets. None actually will zip closed with your iPhone in them, but close. Finally, if you are taller, these will sit above your ankles. As a talk, I’m used to that, but still, cool to know.

wore these pants 3 days in a row

These pants are amazing. I didn’t intend to wear them 3 days in a row: I wore them on the first day of a conference, and they were so perfect I decided to wear them the 2nd day too. And then on the 3rd day, they still looked great and didn’t smell at all, so I said ‘what the heck’ and wore them again. I’d rather have been hiking, but they will now be my conference pants - perfect pockets for phone, bus pass, and hotel key; resisted wrinkling, dirt, and stretching, as well as smell (I was even on my period, and yes, I checked for smell); super generous around the belly for all that conference food and period bloating; wore with dresses as “leggings” and with a blouse and still looked great. Seriously I’m in love with these pants. I wish they came in another color.
