Great design, not one size fits all
I purchased this pack looking for a comfortable touring pack for long days. The material is great, I like the zip open pocket on the back, and the compartment for holding probe and shovel is ideal. Love the pockets at the hipbelt for quick snacks. Overall it seems really well designed. But...NOT one size fits all. I'm disappointed they don't offer a larger torso length option. I was on the cusp of the size chart because I have a long torso and thought I'd try it anyway. No go. Trying the mens. Didn't try it extensively in the field. Curious how the brain and the underbrain cover will perform in the field. Seems like it could be clunky with both.
prefer the discontinued kresta 40 over this
I bought this and then found a used 40L Kresta (discontinued) on REI garage. I returned the unused new Sopris, because the Kresta had such better features and came in an XS/Small slightly smaller frame vs. the one size frame- the sopris doesn't have the insulated hydration sleeve, the helmet carrier seems way more durable on the kresta, and the pockets are more intuitive ( and more pockets internally for small items in the kresta) .Plus even though they are the same amount of liters somehow the Kresta seems a lot bigger. Bring back the 2 sizes for womens across all your packs Osprey - you're one of the few that makes small frame sizes!
Why so highly rated?!
I bought this and the Kresta that was equally highly rated to see which I liked more. I ended up sticking with this one (Kresta was smaller and couldn’t carry all my gear for a long day of backcountry). But even so, I don’t love this pack and wonder why it was so highly rated. My probe barely fits in the avi gear section. Should have two pills in avi gear section. There’s a separate closure in case one didn’t want the brain, but it doesn’t zip off, so I’m stuck with this extra floppy material all the time since I always use the brain. The helmet holder is a joke! The elastic is so tight and narrow, it does not fit my helmet and it is such a pain to get a helmet in and then back out. If you’re using the helmet holder, you cant get into your avi gear pocket, which is a pain when stopping to dig a pit. The hip belt is a little narrow and flimsy; wish it were more substantial as I end up bearing weight on my shoulders. I wish there was water bottle holder on outside (but thankful for the inside water bottle pockets since it’s an inside system). Connecting with my BCA radio is a pain. I do appreciate the smaller women’s size as it fits my torso. Brain having two pockets is great. I like the inside pocket on the back of the pack so when I open the back entry I have that little pocket for keys, etc. I also appreciate the back entry.
It's basically perfect... even for a small guy
I'm a male, 5'7"", 140lbs, and a 17"" torso length. It fits me perfectly. Bought from a local retailer after trying many packs that I just hated. I've taken this on about a two dozen backcountry ski tours ranging from 1.5k dawn patrols to 8k all-day epics. Pros: I love the suspension system. Especially the hip belt. It makes transitions so fast and comfy. Just loosen the hip and shoulder strap and it comes off so easily and then back on and perfectly snug in seconds. I love having the option to remove the lid. I actually have never used the lid. Taking it off it basically makes it a 36ish liter pack. Perfect to pack everything I want and more. I love that with a helmet carry (more on that in the cons) and the flap on top keeps so much snow from getting into my helmet. CONS: I wish there was one more pocket on the outside other than the hip pocket. You've gotta open it every time you want to put something away. The biggest grip is the helmet carry harness it came with. It was laughable. It barely fits over my naked head. Unless you have a helmet for babies, the elastic won't fit over your helmet. I bought the Blue Ice helmet carry net and it integrated with this pack well and now fits my helmet easily. The slightly troubling issue with this pack is the access to the avalanche pocket. You've gotta undo the helmet carry and the ski carry buckle to allow the pocket to get fully open. I've yet had to use this pocket in an emergency situation, but it seems like they coulda designed this a bit better to save you some precious seconds. All things considered, this is a fantastic pack and I'd recommend it to anyone!
Pros & Cons
I own the Osprey Kimberly 32 and find that it was really well made in comparison to the pack being reviewed.
