Best MRE breakfast for hiking/backpacking
We taste test all (new to us) mre's prior to backpacking trips to make sure we enjoy what we're eating while on the trail. This is, by far, the best hot breakfast mre we've had. 2 regular sized biscuits inside - cut in 1/2 so they're thin and then break up each thin into 4 pieces and they'll absorb more liquid. They may still be a bit crunchy, but considering that every MRE is soft/chewy, the extra texture was actually appreciated. I would recommend stirring halfway through, then resealing for remaining 5 min. Loved that this was not super salty (as so many MRE's tend to be). I didn't find ours to be over the top peppery as others have mentioned, but then again, we like a bit of pepper. We did not have to add any extra seasoning, it was fast and easy to make and we saved this for our final breakfast on the trip, as an extra treat for the end of a long hiking/backpacking trip.
Diner eating for on the trail..
I taste tested this one, as I always do, before taking it out on the trail so that I can modify and know what to expect. I would rather make sure I like it before finding out in the middle of nowhere that I don't. Before adding water, it would be best to try to break up the biscuits some. There were 2 "full" sized ones in the container and they were a little stubborn to rehydrate (a little crunchy after the recommended sit time). I broke them apart with my trail knife and should have done so even a little smaller. The sausage rehydrated well. The gravy is quite peppery (if you love pepper, this is for you) and not overly salty tasting. I liked the taste overall and would take it out. I also had the guy try it, as he *loves* a good biscuit and gravy and he really liked it.
"A Tail of a Delicious Breakfast"
So, I bought this on an employee's (REI Colorado Springs) recommendation and took it out to Moab for Creeksgiving 2023. heated it up with a little more than the recommended water, from experience with dehydrated meals involving bread they require a little extra water. waited beyond the recommended time so the biscuit could soak in the juices. my new puppy then, proceeded to smack my camp table with her whip of a tail spilling the majority of the contents onto the desert floor. from what was leftover in the package it was one of the best dehydrated breakfasts I've ever had and both my dogs (after lapping it off of the ground) concurrently agree!
Tastes great; Needs modification / improvement
I am definitely a proponent of trying the food at home before trying in the wilderness, and the elevation difference is negligible for my trips. Overall, the meal did taste like biscuits and sausage gravy, but some improvements are needed. I agree with others that the amount of water is odd. I use Nalgene bottles in the field and there is not a 1/3 cup mark on the bottle; I used the 10 oz mark. The peppered gravy came out really soup-like, and the biscuits and sausage bits did not rehydrate very well. I followed the instructions and let sit for 10 minutes, then I stirred to get the floating biscuits in the gravy and let sit another 5 minutes; still some crunch. This meal could definite use some time and water modification, but the flavor is there. And I feel this is definitely a 1 adult/person meal with 2 serving sizes.
Brick Biscuits
Add extra water! I usually add 1/2 cup extra. Break up the biscuits! If you break up the biscuits and add extra water, this meal is amazing. If you follow the package directions, it is just meh. Also, I let it sit for extra time to make sure that everything is properly rehydrated. The sausage in this meal is super good! It's worth buying if you don't mind breaking up the hard as rocks biscuits by wacking them with a knife or something before rehydrating.
Blown Away
Always been on backpacker's pantry, and this was my first foray into Peak Refuel... I'm definitely going to be trying a lot more. This meal ACTUALLY tasted good. Not like "I've been in the mountains for 6 days and OMG warm calories" good. Actually, honest-to-goodness, darn tasty biscuits and gravy. Tastes and feels like you're eating much more of a regular meal than most dehydrated foods, so this is going to immediately become one of my backcountry staples.
Surprised me
I was skeptical when I saw the two whole freeze dried biscuits when I open this one. Even though all the Peak Refule meals I’ve tried are delicious I really expected a couple of papier-mâché tasting biscuits. I was pleasantly surprised! Not only were the biscuits light and flaky, the gravy was excellent. I ate the whole double portion meal by myself because I had a long day ahead but there was so much food I ended up taking a nap.
Pro tip
Pro tip -break up biscuit to rehydrate. Not sure why they don’t just break up the biscuits to begin with or add it to the directions. Gravy eventually thickened well past the time recommended. Sausage and gravy was very tasty! It was very filling for two people. Will buy again.
Crunchy biscuits and sausage after 25 minute cook
I've tried these packs before and never had any issues until trying this one. Flavor was really good but everything was still crunchy even after 15 minute wait time after pouring recommended 8oz boiling water. Broke up biscuits to smaller pieces and waited about 10 minutes more only to find everything still crunchy/dried. Had to eat it since I didn't have any other food with me on my hike out. Wouldn't recommend
Filling but not great with coffee
The recommendation for water is too much, just keep it to 1 cup and make sure the water is super boiling because it really needs extra time than recommended, like 2-3x more times. If you use the water level recommended 1.3 cup, you'll get soup instead of gravy. As other recommended, break the biscuits. It's kinda spicy so it does not work too well with coffee but I liked it.
