Make an XS Oasis Sun hat with a proper tensioner

Am a small woman so ordered a Small but really need an XS which Outdoor Research does not make. Not happy with the fit because when I tighten the ‘draw string’ elastic the ‘stopper’ no longer has a spring to stop it slipping so have to tie the elastic in a knot. The way the hat is designed, the elastic cuts into my forehead and leaves a mark when it is tight enough to stay in position on my head. Have an older Large Sunbriolet that was my husband’s: it is a better fit and much better quality hat. Needless to say I’m disappointed and would return it if I hadn’t already worn it.

Came Apart After 4 Wears

We received this hat at the beginning of May, and I wore it to the beach four times (on the same trip). That's the only time I had worn it. Today, I took it out fishing, and the seam on the front started to pull away from the top part, leaving a big hole in the hat! I am SO bummed! I, in no way, put this hat through any abuse or demanding physical conditions. I wore it a few times sitting on the beach and thought it would be perfect for fishing this evening. I was not expecting this kind of quality issue with an Outdoor Research product. I'm hoping that I just got a dud.

Wish it was ventilated

I’ve purchased this hat twice in recent years, mainly because of the super-wide brim and excellent price point. I love that OR offers their hats in a variety of sizes, too, especially for women as we are often lacking for options in that area being stuck with “one size.” I’m a tall lady with a larger head and find that the large or XL in OR hats fits well. An improvement I’d love to see with the sun hats is adding ventilation on the crown. I’ve had the Sunbriolet before and it has some but I still find it’s not enough for those of us who live in blistering summer temps. I’d love to see a full brim hat with a fully ventilated top offered in pretty colours.

A good traveler

I wore this hat when my husband and I took a trip on a Mississippi riverboat from Memphis to New Orleans. When I was in Baton Rouge a woman stopped to tell me how much she admired my OR hat. She said she had been looking at it when we were both on the riverboat. Also had a stranger say "Nice hat!" when I walked by while in Memphis. Although the brim makes it a little awkward to lean back in a chair, I find that the light weight of the hat and its complete sun coverage are its most attractive features. This is my third OR wide/brimmed hat. Others have been complimented also. I always provide the name of the company.

I will be buying more colors!

Love it! M fit perfect with my curly head, but a large would make it so I could wear my headphones. I will probably order a different color for backpacking, but my purple one is fun in the garden and keeps me covered up. High quality, good looking and will be my hat for years.

Good for noon time/when sun is directly overhead

I bought a size large because some reviews suggested it can leave a mark around the head (which is common for me with other hats). It's a little big - only noticeable on windy days, but thankfully the neck string prevents it from flying away! It is a very straight brim (if that makes any sense) so I find it works really well when the sun is directly overhead, however, during the rest of the day you will get sun on your face (e.g., tip of nose, chin, mouth area), so you'll want to ensure you're wearing sunscreen. Happy I got this on clearance (lavendar colour) as I wouldn't be as impressed if I paid full price (due to the stiffness/straight brim that doesnt provide the full coverage I prefer in a sun hat).

Love the wide brim but too many negatives for me

I love how wide the brim is but find myself reaching for this hat less and less (have 2 of them). First, this hat runs small and it will leave an indentation in your forehead that seems to last forever (a good hour or so). I thought I was losing my mind over the hat indentation/doing something wrong, but I see other reviews mention the same issue. Also, it's breathability is poor. I get hotter wearing this than similar sun hats with ventilation. Last thing is the brim can get pretty misshapen and is hard to get back in to a more symmetrical flat shape. My hope is a redesign to get the sizing right, more breathability, and a similar selection of colors. I love the purple colors this hat has come in over the years.

Best upf hat

Best upf sun hat on the market, hands down. It keeps you protected and cool. I love the lilac color!

Women's hat for a man

My dad bought this hat at REI last year and he loved it so much he insisted I pass on his review. He uses the hat for gardening, which in the TN summer is hot, muggy, and SUNNY. He bought a large size women's hat, which matches his large men's hat size. The wide brim (4") provides great sun protection. The dome is breathable and light enough to keep you cool in the humid hot south. The sweat band keeps all but the worst sweat out of your eyes. If you are looking for a hat to go with your carrot and cabbage picking, this is the way to go.

Amazing hat that leaves a mark

This is possibly the best sun hat I’ve ever had, but I cannot get past the indentation that it leaves on my forehead for hours after wearing. At first I was like ok maybe the hat is too small, so I sized up to where it was huge and tightened it a bit so it wouldn’t fly off and was left with the same mark. Fix this and you will have the greatest hat of all time!
