Great on the trails, great with ropes
This has got to be the best balance of warmth-dexterity out there for mitten-like warmth. It is much easier to handle my ropes, shovel, ice axe or beacon with this than my full mittens. It feels especially much better on the avy shovel than a pair of mittens. The goatskin leather is holding up well to rope and carabiner use so far, and they stayed bone dry in pretty wet conditions. Removing the insulation and using only the shell layer was great when it warmed up on a ski day. Sizing wise, I went larger than the sizing chart because I've run issues with other brands in the past, but I should have gone with the chart, as it would have fit me a bit better. I advise you follow black diamond's sizing chart.
New Favorite Alpine Glove
Love the warmth and softness of these gloves while maintaining dexterity. The shell is completely waterproof and sheds water extremely well. I reached into flowing water, gloves came out shedding the water like a goose, and remained completely dry inside. Shell by itself is perfect for a warmer day of climbing/skiing and absolutely wind/waterproof. I appreciated the full collar of Velcro (see photo) to connect the insert inside the shell as it aided in keeping snow from getting around my fingers when I forgot to cinch them around my forearm and made getting the gloves on and off very easy. The liner stays secured in place incredibly well. Beyond the many other benefits, the way the leather wrapped around between my thumb and pointer finger (see photo) instills confidence these will be very durable and stand up to the beating of ropes and poles. Sizing chart is very accurate, I measured as instructed and the medium is a perfect fit (measured 8-inches) for my hand. Forearm apron extends another 5.5-inches up the arm from wrist crease.
Warm with Good Dexterity
Black Diamond nailed it with the Soloist. The hybrid mitten design provides more warmth than similarly insulated gloves while giving up very little in terms of function and dexterity. I’ve been using these for rescue training and they work great. Depressing the spring-loaded pin on an avalanche shovel can be a challenge in mittens and even some gloves. It’s no problem with these. Neither is knot-tying. The waterproof lining and extended cuff keep snow and moisture out. If you have been undecided on the hybrid mitten design - don’t be. These won’t disappoint.
Warmth and manual dexterity
After 3 weeks of testing this product in the depths of an early winter, I can say I give these a solid 4 stars. Why would you want a glove like this? To keep your hands as warm as possible without sacrificing manual dexterity. It's the debate between gloves vs. mittens and this is the middle ground. Why would you want this glove? Messing around with buckles on your ski boot with mittens? Not so easy. Trying to hold an ice axe properly? Definitely not ideal with a mitten. This solves those problems. What else makes this pair of gloves unique? This was by far, the most grippy gloves I've had. For example, I was able to unscrew my propane tank from my jetboil genesis. Something I'd usually unglove for. I was able to change my skins with ease, adjust my buckles, and send it without ungloving. The last feature which is nice? The snot absorber on the thumb of the glove! My one complaint? Not having a leash to attach to your wrists for those moments when you do want to doff the gloves.
Super warm and great for a variety of uses
I put these on and just knew they’d be warm. I tested them in -6 degree weather and they kept my fingers warm. I have Raynauds so that is no easy task! They have great grip, didn’t take in moisture, were long enough to cover past my wrist, and pulled tight. I absolutely love these and am so glad I found them. Great product!!
Best purchase I've ever made for winter hiking
I purchased these gloves for winter hiking in NH's white mountains as my hands often get incredibly cold (especially my fingers). Temps were routinely in the single digits, not including windchill. These gloves exceeded my expectations beyond my wildest dreams. They are incredibly warm, water-resistant, and warmed my hands within minutes. They're also incredibly tough, and they withstood scrapes against the harsh NH rocks. They've since traveled with me up mountains in all conditions. I swear by these gloves.
So warm
The soloist finger gloves have worked great for me. The free index finger makes it possible and comfortable to use my ice axe and work with rope. Also having the three other fingers together helps keep my pinky finger warm, which I struggle with in traditional gloves. Being able to remove the interlining has been super helpful to dry the gloves out between using them. It’s also amazing how well the glove fits with it’s interlining and yet is still easy to take apart and put back together. I have had no problems at all with these gloves. They are great for cold weather mountaineering.
Great in stormy winter conditions
I've had these gloves for about two weeks now and have been wearing them in a mixture of stormy Pacific Northwest winter conditions. So far, they're great and they will likely become my new go-to mountaineering and winter sports gloves. The gloves are light in the backpack, but are well-insulated and are very well made, tough, and durable. They provide a good, firm grip on hiking poles/ski poles/ice axes. Pole wrist straps easily fit over the gloves and are easy to remove, but don't slip. The finger separation makes it easy to adjust zippers, even small ones, with the gloves on. The gloves have great breathability but also stay dry in wet weather; additionally they dry quickly. The cuffs fit easily over my rain shell and puffy, stay in place, and are warm. No need to adjust the cinch system -- it is easy to put on and the size is just right. In addition, the liners are removable, good both for use in warmer conditions and drying/washing. Overall, these gloves are outstanding. No complaints.
Holy cow these are warm
I received these as part of the REI product advisor program. My go-to deep winter gloves are the Give'r 4th season gloves - I'm primarily a mountaineer, and I do some skiing/skimo. I wear my Giver's comfortable down to about 0F... temps haven't been cold enough for me to test down to that level but I can confirm these are way, way warmer (not just the half-mitten aspect - the insulation is way warmer). The dexterity isn't QUITE as good as the Giver's, but I can still open my autolock carabiners with them, which is basically my threshold for whether or not a pair of gloves can work for me. These are also way easier to get on/off, and the wrist skirts do a better job of keeping snow out of my sleeves/wrists.I'll definitely reach for these first for extreme cold winter pursuits.
Season Basically Over, But So Far, So Good!
I just received these in the first week of Spring, tried them on ... and then confidently threw away my worn-out Gordini mittens to shovel snow in these bad boys until further notice. They seem to be built like a proverbial arctic tank and are so cleverly designed as to be devious. To begin, the liners are hook-and-looped in so well I didn't even notice them at first -- and then the "finger" segment is designed so that your index fingers can actually go INTO the separate index finger section or slide into the main mitten part with the rest of the fingers, for THAT kind of warm closeness. And the mittens feel VERY warm and insulated, either way. The wrist elastic is snug but comfortable, with room to relax over a few years -- the only part of these mittens with any kind of "break-in" factor. Otherwise they're supple and ready to go.
