Great Cycling Shoe, but....
My experience with Cycling Shoes is very limited, but for a entry level priced cycling shoe I’m very happy. It fits and feels great on the spin bike. I’m typically 11 for most brands (but 10.5 in some) so I went with the 44 since 44.5 wasn’t offered and it worked out. Perfect fit. It looks and feels high quality. So why not 5 stars you ask? Well the insole is a joke and pretty much a built in upsell. Giro wants you to get their Supernatural Fit Kit (customizable arch support insole set) which is $40. The one that comes with the shoe is one of those completely flat 2mm ones that are useless and unfortunately go straight into the trash. Maybe this is common in cycling circles since most people use their own insoles anyway and from that POV not even a bad idea!? But say so in the product description. Just a little frustrating for me when I’m expecting to at least be able to just use the shoe. Anyway, luckily I have a couple Superfeet that I’m using in various shoes anyway. They work well with these.
A Solid Shoe
First, I need to say that the size chart was accurate for me. I wear a US men’s 10.5, the size chart 44. I ordered the 44 and they FIT! Which is really important when shopping online. I choose the Gauge Mountain Bike shoes, as I wanted something more ‘normal’ looking for short rides and quick store runs. Saving the more focused road and MTB shoes for more focus rides. These shoes could easily be mistaken for regular trainers which is exactly what I was looking for. I find them more comfortable than most bicycle shoes and they are easy enough to walk in. . I think they might end up being my main gravel and urban and the ride season get underway. There’s a stretchable ‘loop’ on the tongue of the shoe, to tuck the laces into after they are tied, which is a nice touch. You won’t have to worry about your laces getting caught in the cranks or chain. I use them with egg beater pedals and they have no clearance issues.
Good value, looks like sneakers.
These are my first pair of cycling shoes. I wanted something that would kind of pass for "sneakers" since I regularly ride into town for small groceries etc., as well as be able to walk on them for some distance depending on where I park my bike. For the appearance part, they certainly fit the bill. On the walking part - I only tried them out around the house and they still protruded a bit beyond the sole making it a bit awkward to walk in for some distance on pavement. Time will tell. They are not [that] heavy - I did not weight them. I normally wear 8.5 mens - which wasn't available in the style I wanted - so I settled for my exact size which is 7.5. I had to use thin socks with them and needless to say they are an exact fit... But I hope with some breaking in, they will stretch a little. I used Shimano SH-51 cleats with them and they work well. No issues after my first ride - apart from having to fiddle my feet to get the cleats to clip in - since they are mostly recessed in the sole.
