Delicious breakfast!
Pretty excited to try this one as I am a fan of peanut butter and bananas. Easy enough to make, just add hot water and mix in the PB. I let sit the 5 minutes as instructed. Smelled great when I opened the seal. The oats were well softened and the chunks of banana rehydrated well but needed a little stir to break up the PB gobs. The flavor and texture was really good; just like you’d have if made at home. I’m definitely a fan and would bring this Camping or hiking. Easy to carry, cook, and eat. I do recommend a longer handle spoon or cutting off the top of the pouch.
Oatmeal that Exceeds Expectations
I always prefer to try new brands of freeze-dried backpacking food at home because nothing is worse than finding out you immensely dislike something in the middle of the mountains. So, with that said, my review of this oatmeal comes from my kitchen, not the trail. I started with mid-level expectations since freeze-dried banana is always hit or miss for me. Inside are oats, chunks of freeze-dried banana, and a packet of peanut butter. The strong banana smell upon opening the oatmeal made a little worried that the banana flavor would be artificial or overwhelming but no, it's the perfect balance of banana to peanut butter. The peanut butter mixes in well, so there's no aggressively thick clumps of peanut butter, and the banana pieces are small but not invisible. Taste-wise 10/10. I will definitely buy this oatmeal for my next backpacking trip. My only complaint is that the depth of the package makes it difficult to actually eat the oatmeal, even with a regular size spoon in my kitchen. I would imagine this would be a larger issue with my dinky little backpacking utensils.
Yummy oatmeal on the go
I work as an outdoor school teacher and need food on the go. This oatmeal was super easy to make. I used warm water instead of boiling and it was great. They give you a ton of peanut butter, I only needed half. The cinnamon was a yummy finish. There is a lot per package. If having fruit or another item you could share it with a friend or save half for later.
Delicious but sugary
Check the ingredients before deciding if the carb count is appropriate for whatever activities you have planned; there a LOT of added sugars. While it tastes delicious, I'm not sure the calorie count was worth it for me. The package is very thin and easy to pack with no extra air, but it was also pretty heavy. Lastly, the package is foil-based so that you can add boiling water and eat straight from the container, but it's too tall to dig a spoon into without getting oatmeal on your hands and isn't recyclable.
Yummy Oatmeal
So it's better than you'd expect for a backpacking meal, as I've noticed seems to be the burgeoning positive trend in the arena. I'd like it if it had a bit more peanut butter, the oatmeal is fine but for the massive amount of sugar in there it doesn't really have a strong taste (I don't add sugar to anything I make in general, so I was expecting this to be sickly sweet to my taste buds; this was not the case). That being said, it's perfectly fine for a cold (or otherwise) morning on the trail, and if you have your own dried fruit, peanut butter, nuts/seeds, etc that you can add to it I'm sure it would be a five star meal out on the trail.
Perfect for the Trail!
Legit trail food! Backpackers Pantry makes it easy and straightforward to have a nutritious and filling meal on the go. The process is very easy to follow and the taste definitely hits the spot. While some freeze dried foods can be starchy or "rough" tasting, Backpackers Pantry knocked it out of the park with oatmeal that has great taste, texture and flavor. Everything mixes really nicely so there are not big clumps and the consistency of the oatmeal is really nice. I will definitely be purchasing these again in the future as I enjoyed them and they are super helpful.
Similar to any instant oats+PB breakfast
The peanut butter & banana oatmeal is okay but a little basic for the cost. It would be more economical, similar weight-wise, and similar nutrient-wise to use (high-protein) instant oats & bring individual peanut butter packets like the one included in the package. This oatmeal just tastes similar to that process (which I usually do)...but pricier. I really couldn't taste much in the way of banana flavor which may have improved the product. The only benefit for this oatmeal is if you prefer not to take any cooking ware on a backpack, then this would be a reasonable solution for breakfast! And it tastes fine, just nothing special. I do appreciate that it is gluten-free & vegan.
Favorite Breakfast
Great breakfast or would be a good afternoon snack for cooler weather hikes. Oatmeal is always a great food - now mixing in bananas and peanut butter was awesome. It’s now my favorite breakfast.
Great meal for breakfast!
Very tasty oatmeal. Easy to make and carry on the trail. Would highly recommend to any peanut butter lover.
Hearty breakfast
Oatmeal is my go to breakfast and this one has good flavor. It is fairly easy to prepare only adding hot water and the enclosed peanut butter and then closing the package to let it steep for five minutes. The peanut butter gets a bit messy, peanut butter powder might be easier, but it has a decent amount of protein to start the day. I would definitely get his again.
