I am not outdoorsy. In fact, I am a VERY city centered person. I like concrete and traffic. So, when I went to REI to buy boots for hiking with my Tiny Human, I knew I had to get the flower child socks that people wear when they go hiking, and with their Birkenstocks, and over their leggings in wintertime. The socks that the people wear with everything. But what I was not prepared for was that these are MAGIC SOCKS. They feel like a friend who wants to just come over for a cup of tea and sit on the sun porch or like the Swedish word “hygge.” I initially balked at the price. I could buy a synthetic sock package and have 20 socks for the price of one pair, but here I am buying more of them because they are “hygge.” And after the last 3 years, we all could use some of that.
I wanted to love these socks as have several other Smartwool ankle hiking socks but found they were a bit too snug on my calfs.
I realize smart wool socks are supposed to be form fitting, but these are QUITE snug, making my feet feel cold, the opposite of what they are intended to do :(
These socks are supposed to be light yet are quite thick
LOVE these socks! fit like a glove. no slipping or sliding inside shoe/boot. Crew height just right, doesn't feel like an athletic sock.
I loved Smartwool socks and wear them everyday. But they must have changed their mix of wool and polyester with this model. My feet sweat very much in these socks. Too bad. I guess I need to find a new brand of wool socks to start wearing.
About these of the gift for my very active mother she does very small through and throughout hikes and also 10k runs. I bought these as a Christmas gift last year and she's still wearing them.
I like these socks all right but had thought the upper part was thicker, like another pair of Smartwool socks I own. They work okay for this time of year in Vermont but I think I would prefer the thicker option during the earlier part of winter. I wish it was easier to tell what “model” sock I already have to be able to buy them again once I know that I like them.
These were my favorite socks while walking The Camino de Santiago. No blisters! Super soft and comfy.
Thinner than I expected but they fit well and have washed without shrinkage or pilling.
