Flavorless and beefless
I brought this on a recent backpacking trip and I can't say I'd recommend it. For starters, it's beef FLAVORED (see the tiny print below the word 'beef'). I don't mind that it doesn't actually contain meat but I think it's pretty misleading. Furthermore it didn't even have a beef flavor - it was overall pretty flavorless. Positives: freeze dried veggies were pretty decent. The bag stands up by itself so you don't have to baby it. Allegedly has 11g protein. Negatives: It takes 10 minutes to make (my gourmet ramen from the grocery store took 4). Tasteless. Expensive for what it is. Overall, save your time/money/tastebuds and get regular ramen from the grocery store.
Deceptive
I picked this up at REI Salt Lake City. I'm always on the lookout for a new trail food experience. This was new, but not good as I discovered on the trail. The title reads, "BEEF WITH MUSHROOMS & VEGETABLES". In small print under the word beef it says flavored. Granted I should have looked closer, but clearly the intention was to convey the impression that the product contains beef. It doesn't. The prepared food was OK, but low in calories for a full day hiking with pack. There are better options out there.
Decent light meal
Lately I've gone on a testing spree of many types of camping food. To give them all a fair shake, I've ate them all for lunch under similar circumstances. Pros: You're able to easily cook the meal in the bag The bag is short so it's much easier to eat OUT of the bag as well. With many meals in a very deep bag, you either have to have a very long spoon or you're going to get some food on your fingers. This is what initially got my attention for this brand and it did deliver on this benefit very well. Lightweight Easy to open Bag seems very durable, didn't have any fears of the bag ripping. Taste is pretty decent, not the best ramen I've ever had, but for what it is I would say I enjoyed the meal. It doesn't taste overly salty or overspiced. The broth is a bit better than what I would expect from an instant camping meal though! Cons: This pack takes 1.5 cups which gets the bag pretty close to full. This means you just need to be a bit more careful while cooking in the wilderness, which can be tough when you don't have even ground and don't want to burn your finger tips. Fortunately, sealing the bag isn't too difficult as long as you use your sleeves. Just be cautious not to burn your fingers here or spill the bag as it's very full. Minor issue - oxygen absorber packets for this brand are smaller and seem to always be buried at the bottom of the bag. They also seem to have the spices crusted to it as well. Def not a game changer, but it's slightly annoying. Conclusion: This is a fair lighter meal; there's not enough here to make you feel bloated which is nice. Pretty decent for a soup option on a cold day to warm you up. I'd purchase/eat again, but not for trips where I plan on burning tons of calories with lots of hiking.
Just doesn't taste good.
It just doesn't taste good. I'm not sure what it tastes like, but it's certainly not beef, mushrooms, and vegetables. It's salty, kind of smells like soy sauce, but I can't describe a flavor profile. Maybe a cheap beef gravy packet and stale ramen? I'm regretting buying four different products from Trailtopia to test for my upcoming hike of the JMT....but I'm glad I'm trying this stuff before heading out so I'm not stuck on the trail with gross food.
Cup of noodles in a bag.
Skip this meal and buy a cup of noodles.
Great flavor but overpriced
This one tastes good, but it was not worth the price to me. It filled me up, but I would not say it was much better than a 10 cent Ramen Noodle package
Better than grocery store ramen
This had good flavor and value for the money. It can be a main meal with crackers and cheese or other supplemental protein.
Gluten Free and Very Good!
Very good. Delicious texture on the noodles. Very tasty broth. Would buy again.
A Decent Meal
Really like the container being short and easy to get spoon into. The food itself is decent but is lacking in flavor or seasoning. A bit bland. Good serving size though and lots of vegetables. Good choice for a quick and easy lunch. Next time I will pack along some seasoning to go with it
Ramen with a twist
It wasn’t bad for ramen. Had a few veggies in there. Would I take it with me again for $4, or would I try another option for a little less money? Jury is out, but it would be a good option for someone who doesn’t want to think about trying to “nutrition up” a ramen packet.
