Loving basket life
Been researching this basket extensively. I’m using this on my commuter bike which has a suspension fork. There aren’t many options out there for a suspension fork, but luckily, PDW has helped us with that. I mainly bought this because I wanted a little extra room when grocery shopping. After researching and reading what few reviews I could find and speaking directly to PDW with a few questions, I decided to pull the trigger. Finish is nice. Quality is good. The mount being plastic makes me nervous, but PDW assured me that it’s robust enough and it is made by a good supplier of such mounts. Installation was easy and I’m happy with the mount now that I’ve seen it in person.
Perfect commuter basket!
This basket was surprisingly easy to install and so strong! It just mounts right to your handlebars, no need to mess with support beams to the front hub. Love the slot for holding my U-Lock, so useful and keeps things tidy. The light mount is located below the basket, so it doesn't take up any space, also it means the light (previously mounted on the handlebar) won't be hidden by my big ol' bag. It's sleek, minimalist and sturdy, the perfect size for everyday rides, not too bulky and so so useful when you need a little carrying capacity.
Incorrect Dimensions
The dimensions listed for the basket aren't even close. For anyone looking at this product, the actual interior dimensions are 9.75" x 6.75" x 4.5". Wasted my time picking this up and now returning it...
Not sure I’d recommend
The basket clamping mechanism is optimistic on the thickness of bars it supports. It lists the small is 22.2 however, I have the Velo orange clunker bars which are 22.2 mm (stem clamp is 25mm but it tapers into 22.2) and the smallest clamps were obviously too wide and were not work. I contact PDW customer support who were very friendly and mailed me what they said were hopefully a smaller size clip (the clamp design is plastic a clip with a screw and a wire to pull the basket in place) that might work. Those were really just the smallest size clips that were already included in the original packaging (PDW did includ some cool stickers!) and clearly were too big to hold it in place. I think I can make it work with some rubber gaskets from Amazon but even then this attachment mechanism doesn’t seem well thought out. I have a slight rise to my stem and that might play a role with my issues. However, I don’t think I would recommend this basket as it doesn’t seem to be a particularly secure design. I also have their smaller bodega basket which is a lot steadier and uses a more rational attachment system.
U-Lock Holder Flawed
Buyer beware if you use a heavy u-lock like the Kryptonite New York standard and bike on bumpy roads. Top portion of the basket broke off after a year of use, rendering the basket completely useless. From what it seems, the vibration of the lock against the holder (while riding) added stress to the metal over the year. Probably better off using a different method to hold your u-lock
