bought this last year despite the bad reviews because I needed a collapsible water bottle, and I am incredibly glad I did. was there a plasticky taste initially? yes, but it was gone after 3-4 uses. since then, it's been an absolutely invaluable lightweight travel bottle (great for filling up after airport security), camping, hiking, dancing (staying hydrated & being able to clip it to a pack or belt at a long party is clutch?), you name it... no durability problems after almost a year of very regular use. only drawbacks are slight staining over time (typical of this material) & cleaning it can get a lil finicky. but worth every penny, frankly.
Smell/taste too overwhelming
Could not get over the smell and taste. I mortised the sweet, honey-like smell when I bought it and REI actually gave me 10% off bc of this and it being the last one in their store. This bottle is the absolute perfect size for what I use it for, but the smell leaches into the water and you can’t smell of taste anything but that. Reached out to the company directly and they gave me a BS response about how good the material that they use is, and that I can try to fix the smell with milk or lemon water, but clearly there is something wrong with their material if there are tons of reviews from people having this exact complaint??
doesn't leak and it packs up small
While skiing, using a hydration pack requires frequent "hose care" to prevent it from freezing. I now take this small bottle (I have the 500ml) in my pocket. If I'm in the back country, I'll refill it from a larger bottle. If I'm at the resort, I'll refill it in the lodge. While it's a bit bulky in my pocket when it's full, after a couple of sips I don't even know it's there. I also take it on Airplanes. Empty it takes up no space in my messenger bag. I fill it up after security and clip it on the outside. The valve in the spout means that you need to squeeze and suck on the niple at the same time, but, so far, it hasn't leaked at all.
Recurring problems. Perfect with a big flaw.
Flawed product. I really want to love this thing. It’s light, it’s soft and fits into a hip pack or backpack side pouch, a car drink holder, back of an airplane seat, jacket pocket and more. It’s the perfect size for a workout or run. What I don’t love is how the cap wants to cross thread after just a few uses. I use this daily and it’s always being refilled so the cap goes through many cycles. But this flaw in the injection molding is causing the leading thread to flatten. I’ve exchanged it once and looks like I’m headed to REI to exchange the second one in three months span. Spouse verified issue as well.
Great handheld for running
I've been looking into hydration methods for my longer runs now that it's getting hotter. I don't plan on going long enough to invest in a vest, I've been steered away from waistpack attachments, and those handhelds with the strap bothered me SO much. My handheld felt too rigid, hot, sloshy and heavy despite being fairly minimal - no thank you. I actually got the Hydrapak bottle to store in the back of my sports bra, which worked out well because of the loop handle. But one day I held it during my long run, and it was even better. My hand felt surprisingly free and my water was super accessible. Perfect for my needs!
Perfect Backpacking bidet
All the reasons everyone else is raving about this bottle is exactly why it is the perfect Backpacking bidet. Its durable, light, doesn't leak, the pressure you can squeeze it with is great, and it packs down to nothing. Way better than any of the official bidet marketed items I've used in the past. Feminine hygiene on the trail has vastly improved with it. Seriously.
Still tastes like plastic two years later
I've tried everything. Baking soda, vodka, hot water, soapy water, dishwasher. Nothing has gotten rid of the very strong terrible plastic taste. Too bad it's past the return period. I put it away after ski season thinking that horrible taste will be gone by next season. Nope.
Great for Skiing
I've used this for 2 ski seasons now (~60 days). Never explodes, never leaks, is easier to drink from than a sports cap (one-way valve) and doesn't spill. Overall very happy with this product. I have 2 gripes that are not necessarily a fault of this product: 1) it had a plastic-y taste out of the box, which was fixed by putting a LOT of lemon water in one day, and 2) I wish they made it taller than it was wide, it would be better in a ski jacket and less of a square blob. but again, these aren't really the fault of the product. I would highly recommend.
Must have for all hikes!
I received the Hydrapak as a gift from my brother- in-law who knows I love to hike. I recently started carrying it with me on hikes and it’s been nothing but beneficial and therapeutic. I know, sounds random…therapeutic! However, I have carpal tunnel and it gets worse while hiking. I’m also fidgety and usually have a rock in hand on my hikes. I digress, the hydrapak has been my new therapy sac! #hydrasac I fidget with it constantly and the more I drink from it, the different levels of “tension” for my hand. It feels great as a hand exercise, I love the tree print (must be past season because I don’t see it on their website) and it keeps me hydrated. I’m always surprised after a hike that it’s not punctured or leaking based on how much I’m squeezing and folding it. Plus it makes for some great sac jokes!! This is a top quality innovative product that is ideal for anyone looking for a lightweight, packable, ice pack, heat sac, hand therapy squishy, water bottle, Hydrapak. It feels good knowing I’m supporting a company who is proactive with environmental conservation. It’s clear with their innovative products and impactful actions, Hydrapak is a company I can stand behind.
Great for general purpose, not great for cycling
In general I think these bladders are great. I've got 4 HydraPak bladders in different sizes. I was hoping to use this one to put in my jersey pocket when cycling. It fits well in my jersey pockets, but with the lid tightened all the way, the protrusions from the lid are perpendicular to the bladder and they kind of dig into your back. From a drinking perspective, it makes sense to design it this way, but from a jersey pocket storage perspective, it is not ideal. I use it just for storage and refill my water bottles from this bladder so I don't even need the flip top lid. I assume the "SoftFlask" cap would be a bit more comfortable since it doesn't have the chunky protrusions on it, but I would actually just prefer a simple screw on top.
