Some Good Some Bad..
I like them in theory. Easy to carry and get pretty small and compact when empty. Great for an icepack if you freeze them. They leave a strong plastic taste in the water if you leave it in there more than a day. For a short hike and fishing trip The flavor was fine. But next trip after a whole day in the bag the water got the plastic taste. So I used bottle bright and I have kept them full for over a week now with daily water changes to hopefully bleed that out at some point. But for now, still the same thing. I don't know if it's harmful but it makes me a little nervous. I'm not sure that can be ideal. But maybe over time it will go away.
Wine on the trail
I got this to see how it would be on a nice bottle of wine. Will it affect the taste after several days? I did a test a few days before my PCT section hike and it worked well, though in the house. Once out on the trail, I spent two days hiking in the summer heat from Sonora Pass to the Yosemite border. Met with a couple of friends hiking northward. We had a nice long break with a great bottle of Barbera wine from Sera Fina, some cabernet soaked cheese, and crackers. Then it was off hiking back north to Sonora Pass. Had some wine left after three more days. That little bit still tasted very good. The HydraPak did not affect the wine in any way.
Good bottle with caveats
this is a great water bottle for backpacking or just being on the go. It is first and foremost LIGHTWEIGHT and it is almost leak proof. (If you squeeze on it REALLY HARD you can get water to come out without sucking on the valve, but otherwise it doesn't leak.) The cons are: water does taste like plastic within a few hours, and the cap is very difficult to screw on. It takes me a good 15-20 seconds each time to get the threads lined up right. But, for having a waterbottle in the tent with me at night, which I can sip from and know it won't leak all over - i'm willing to make that tradeoff.
Used To Be Perfect
The Hydrapak Stow bottles used to be the perfect water bottle, lightweight, durable, and secure. These new water bottles are a disappointment. The caps easily come undone while walking through brush or when rubbing against a rock while climbing. In winter this is a hazard as you get soaked from the self opening water bottle. Also, could be I got an unlucky one, but the last bottle I bought seemed to be noticeably less durable than my original stow bottles. I’m rough with them and toss them on the ground when I stop to drink and climb with them on my harness. My last stow bottle lasted over a year before puncturing. My latest one lasted less than a day.
Works great for filtering
Threads DO work for standard Sawyer filter. Used this for "dirty" water from the stream and worked great for filtering. A lot better than the flimsy bag that comes with the filter
Excellent design: flexible, sturdy and functional
I real needed a collapsible reusable bottle to travel with especially on flights. This is it! I loved it every time I had to use it for my trip, be it filling, storing in a tight pocket or emptying it just before security. It even stands on its base. Used it on a 23 day trip across Europe and Africa. It looks well made but it's too new to say if it'd have any issues. Cleaning does look like a challenge which I have not attempted yet.
Nice design, but plastic taste is too much for me.
The design of these bottles is very convenient for carrying: they get smaller as you empty them so don't continues to take up space. The flat, flexible shape makes the bottle slip in well where other 1L containers would be too wide and too rigid. The cap design stayed clean and dry inside my bags. But ultimately I had to return the two that I bought, as the plastic taste they impart to the water did not go away after multiple washings and multiple uses. Tried to ignore it; tried to be okay with it, failed. Would love the very same design made with better-grade materials.
Not Very Durable
I originally liked the bottle. It was lightweight and easy to pack. It looked smaller than 32oz. It didn't leak. It did taste like plastic, but I don't mind the taste and didn't try to get rid of the taste by cleaning it. You can't stand it up, so more surface area gets dirty when you lie it down. However, the biggest problem was that I dropped it the first weekend I used it and it got a tear on a seam that I couldn't repair. I had to return it. I am debating getting another one and trying to reinforce the seems before use.
Poor design
Nozzle developed mold and when trying to clean it the flexible nozzle/valve popped out. It cannot be put back in.
Pastic taste won't go away
I really want to like this bottle, but I can not get the plastic taste out of it. I've cycled water through it, baking soda, baking soda and peroxide, mouthwash. I'm going to try cheap vodka next.
