Sizing Notes

CHEST: Measure at the widest point. If the person is muscular, take a second measurement at the armpit area, across the upper chest. Use the larger of the two measurements.

HIP: Place the tape around the hips and across the widest point of the buttocks. Make sure that all pockets are empty.

INSEAM: This is also referred to as the “crotch to ankle bone” measurement. Have the person stand with legs straight and feet about 12” apart. Measure from the crotch area, snug up against the body, down to the ankle bone.

SLEEVE LENGTH: Hold arm directly out to the side, parallel to the floor, palm down. Bend the elbow forward, stop hand in front of nose. Place the tape at the base of the neck, starting at the spine. Run tape along the arm, turn at the elbow, measuring to the wrist bone.

WAIST: Measure around the narrowest part of the waist.

Well made. Impossibly tight wrists

Never got as far as trimming the neck because the wrist grommets are so tight they cut off circulation to my hands. I have 7” circumference wrists. The neck grommet is sized down to a 13” neck so trimming is required. Mine is 16”. Putting it on for fit will choke you out for sure. Kokatat says you cannot trim the wrist grommets. They are not designed for that. They recommend stretching the grommets over a soda can for 48 hrs. I did over a can slightly larger for 72 hours and it did not help. Kokatat should consider making the wrist trimable also. Hands without circulation won’t grip and will get cold. Had to return the suit, sadly…

well made, great materials, good design

This thing is very well thought-out - Kokotat has been making dry suits for a long time and it shows. I chose the brand on the recommendation of a Coast Guard Search and Rescue guy who's also a paddler, and who has spend a career on and in the water. I wasn't sure what size to order; I fall right between XL and XXL. Based on past experience with other one-piece suits (skiing, motorcycling) along with drysuit-specific advice I found elsewhere, I went with the XXL - and although it is a bit large, due to the clever design it's very manageable. The sleeves and waist area are meant to telescope up to take up the slack and make it fit well, and with this size I have no restricted movement even when bending way down, when my other one-piece suits have tended to max out along the back. A deep bend does use up exactly the slack I have, so it seems I made the right choice. An adjustable elastic waistband helps manage the excess material around the waist and allows you to pull the suit halfway on and cinch it up, then drive to a local launch site or walk around with the arms tied around your waist while you load gear, etc. before committing to the full seal. The seals are great - the latex is well sized and will need little modification; the neoprene cuffs should prolong life by protecting the latex from UV exposure, but it also fends off the chill I've had in the past with simpler dry tops, where a chilly wind cuts right thru that layer of rubber to the bare skin underneath, particularly on the neck. Zippers are well protected, and operate well - the over-the-shoulder terminus of the main zipper is an awkward reach but I'm figuring out the best way to do it. But the best thing is the gore-tex - I never had that in paddling wear before! I went for a pretty strenuous paddle on my board with temps in the 40s, and when done I was amazed that the only place I was at all sweaty was under my life jacket. I tend to sweat a lot and was used to coming in from a paddle soaking wet inside my outer layer, so this is a real game changer. I foresee myself getting a LOT of use out of this, as I extend my paddling season fully into year-round with no concessions to weather.

Awesome dry suit!

Haha, the tight gasket issue is normal! After 35 years of using Kokatak dry suits you will learn to simply trim the neck gasket and then stretch all gaskets over coffee cans or tupperware for a few days, then simply wear the drysuit and it will break in over time. This is the best drysuit money can buy! Of course if your a newbee you dont know the basics, but will learn over time.

Tight neck gasket

Really a beautifully crafted piece. Great sewing, design and materials. I'm an XL in everything, but the measurements for this drysuit put me in an XXL. Arms, legs, torso, seat all fit well in the kayak seated position, and its hard to pull that off in a onsie. I'm familiar with one piece suits for motorcycling and its hard to get a good fit off the rack. Ironically the Gore-tex Pro Dry Suits cost as much as the far more detailed, robust and armored motorcycle suits. After renting dry suits several times I was excited to get my own. But.. I had to return it. The neck gasket on an XXL suit needs to fit a guy with an 18 inch neck. Not so with this item. I think my head turned various shades of pink, red and purple when I tried it on. I am familiar with dry suit neck gaskets. They're tight. But this one almost choked me out. Researching solutions I found this quote on the Kayak Academy website "If the original gasket didn't fit your neck well, it is worth trying these universal gaskets because they are available in a wider range of sizes. Kokatat's neck gaskets only come in two neck sizes: L and S (and the L isn't very large)." KA sells five sizes of replacement gaskets. Apparently this is a common problem with Kokatat. While I could have trimmed the gasket or replaced it with something aftermarket, I didn't think I should have to at this price. REI ordered me a NRS Axiom as an alternative and honored my expired coupon code. Can't asked for more than that! I am sure the size L and smaller Kokatat suits are awesome.
