Seems like a good, do-it-all running shoe
I just took a new pair of Sense Ride 4s out for a long trail run. It's my first time running in Salomon shoes; I have been running in Inov-8s for years and love them, but I figured I'd try something new. Here are my impressions: The tongue felt a bit stiff while trying them on and wearing them around the house and I thought it might give me problems, but on the trail it felt really comfortable. The quick-lace system took a bit getting used to, but to my surprise it cinched up the entire upper evenly and comfortably. The only issue was that I had to stop about midway through my run to cinch them up again. I think this is because the shoes are new and the uppers were stretching just a tad during those first few miles. Once I re-tightened everything, it stayed that way for the rest of the run. The footbed felt firm to me, which I actually like. Runners used to a plusher ride might feel that the forefoot padding is lacking, but for those who like a firmer ride with good turnover, the Sense Rides are nice. I've always heard that Salomons tend to run narrow/low-volume. As someone with low-volume feet, this appealed to me. I found the toe box roomy enough to allow for foot swelling and spread after miles on the trail, but not so wide as to make them feel sloppy. Nor were the so snug that they caused pressure on the sides of my feet. Fit was perfect, and they feel true to size for me, with perhaps just a tad extra length in the toe box. That works well for trail running and bombing downhill without smashing your toes. Coming from Inov-8s with a much lower heel stack (20mm), the significantly taller stack in the Sense Rides definitely took some getting used to. The terrain I run on is hilly singletrack, full of rocks and roots, with some areas passing through boggy terrain that gets (and stays) pretty muddy, but with some areas that are sandy. For the first few miles I caught my ankles starting to roll a few times while going downhill on some heavily rooted and eroded sections of trail. Once I got used to the shoes, however, the rest of the run was much more controlled. Those with ankle problems may be better served by going with a shoe with a lower heel stack. On the flip side, grip was excellent. We got some rain the day before, followed by a dusting of snow and rapidly dropping temps that went below freezing. The Sense Rides were surprisingly grippy on all of the terrain, including semi-frozen mud, rocky sections with a snow dusting, and large flagstones placed along some sections for erosion control. At the end of the run I put in another mile on pavement just to see how they performed as road shoes, and they were excellent. In fact, I think that they behaved just as well if not better on the road as they did on the trail. That said, it was only a mile, so I'll reserve full judgement for now. Overall, I give the Sense Ride 4s a definite thumbs up. I docked one star because I think the heel stack is too high for a trail shoe. Although I eventually got used to it, I'm concerned that a momentary lack of concentration, especially later in a long run when my legs are tired, might easily result in a rolled ankle on more technical terrain. But for a running shoe that performs well on the trail and the road, I think the Sense Rides are pretty darn good.

Clicking/popping sound with every step
The shoes were very comfortable, but there is a loud popping sound in both shoes while walking. It’s also strange that the lace, when tightened, covers the pouch that you are supposed to tuck them into. I had to return them after one day hike because of the popping noise. Salomon usually makes great shoes and I can’t recommend the X Ultras enough, but these are just poorly made.

Poor quality

I bought them less than two weeks ago. Unfortunately, during my 4th run in these new shoes, one of the "eyelets" got ripped out its place. Looks like a poor stitching. I had a pair of previous model - Sense Ride 3 - and, although they worn out sooner than I expected, I liked them

One Shoe to Rule Them All

I've put over a 100 miles on these shoes so far and I can't find a single fault with them. If you're familiar with the Sense line, you know that these are the Swiss Army Knife of trail shoes. From short training runs to ultra distance races, the Sense Ride 4 can do it all. I love how Salomon updated the tongue for this rendition of the show. Its now thinner and the lace tucks into the bottom rather than the top. The cushion allows you to go the distance without making it feel like you are running on marshmallows like some other brands.

Overall Great Shoe

Bought these after getting some posterior tib tendonitis and big toe pain from minimalist shoes. These have helped me continue running pain free (along with some PT of course). They ran a bit larger than my previous shoes (I wear 8.5 but got these in an 8) and they are slimmer than what I'm used to but not overly so. The lacing system is nice after you get used to it and the shoes are great for the trails here in Boulder, CO. The shoes are nice and firm as well as not very tall in the stack height so I feel low to the ground and very stable. No real complaints from me. Overall, I've like these so much that I've got some Salomons for everyday use too and am enjoying them very much.

Great traction on Southwest trails

Received free product

Excellent trail running shoe in a lightweight package. The rubber is soft but durable and had excellent traction on rock trails. The cushion was a little less than I am used to with my normal trail shoes (Hoka Mafate) but definitely on the higher end of what I have experienced in the multiple prior pairs of Salomon shoes I have owned in the past. My only complaint was that the lace stash pocket on the tongue overlapped with the top crossing of the laces, but once stowed they definitely stayed in place.

Perfect upgrade!!

I love everything about this shoe! Every upgrade on this shoe has a place. It Seems to have more support throughout the entire shoe (upper and lower ) . My personal favorite is the added cushion to the sole. It is a stout and safe ride that I have already taken on big efforts and am convinced I have many more to come. I feel like it was the step in the right direction and plan on purchasing as many as I can get my hands on. I would also recommend this shoe to anyone that has really high arches.

too narrow, uncomfortable arch.

somethings not right with these. The length is right, but at the arch, they are like a size 7. I need to tighten them to keep heel in, but that cuts off circulation at the arch. Uncomfortable as soon as I put them on. I wore them around the house to see if I could break them in. But I don't think it's going to happen. I have 6 other pairs of Salomons around the house and all others were instantly comfy, these feel instantly uncomfortable. Also the left is more uncomfortable than the right. It feels like the arch on the left is 1/2" too close to the heel. I do notice the clicking everyone is talking about,, it seems to come from the stiff material on top of the toe. Not a big deal for me.

can't go wrong

The Sense Ride 4 is a perfect shoe for all around trails conditions. I would say it runs true to size I am typically a size 10 across-the-board and Salomon shoes. It's a great work horse shoe. If you just want to log miles or if you want to train a little bit more up-tempo. I've had the previous sense rides and I think this one is a great improvement as well even though I enjoyed the previous models.

Sense Ride 4 - Jack of All Trades

These are great all a round trail runners for the dry/buffed out trails of Utah. I'm on my second pair of these. My first pair made it to mile 260 and the the toebox blew out like some of the other reviews noted. I am a huge fan of these shoes. They're lightweight, provide a great lockdown feel, and are responsive. I recently brought these on a trip to Austria and they served as my one shoe quiver for a month. They handled, concrete ,gravel, mud, and scree very well. The issues with the clicking toes is real but goes away after about 20 miles of break in. I don't find this to be an issue because the sound of running usually drowns out this noise. I only noticed this "clicking" while walking.

Worn 2 weeks - already damaged very light use

Very comfortable, but narrow fit. Unfortunately- Have only worn a few times now and not yet for strenuous exercise. Today an eyelet tore and they were not even on very tight. Indicative of poor quality. Never had this issues with other Salomon shoes I’ve had. Very Disappointed. Would not recommend.

Stable but fragile

I take tham as outdoor shoes to Armenia&Georgia. After 4 weekends of usage, both of them had a hole on my little-finger (suddently no waterproof, no secure). I had to buy a new pair. I dont understand so good reviews in comparison pages.
