A Sturdy Beast!
Bought this tent for the family, and couldn't be happier. Set up is rather straightforward, especially with 2 people. The inside is absolutely massive with great pockets in well thought-out places. We put 4 bikes in the vestibule in a Southeast rainstorm and still had room to walk around and put chairs while the storm passed, with our cooler also in there. No leaks or anything to worry about in the rain either. Our kids are stoked to get out again which is likely the most important part.

Design Flaws Make This Just OK
I thought I was going to like this given all the great reviews, and I really wanted to keep it, but there are a several design flaws that ruined it for us. It's a beast size-wise and requires two people to setup. Took forever the first time, but not as complicated once we did it once. Still takes awhile longer than some simpler tents out there. The first design flaw (and we had this same issue with the Big Agnes 6 person) is the back door zips in a half-oval from side to side instead of a half-oval across the bottom, top, and one side (like every tent I've ever owned). It sounds like a small thing, but it means having to completely unzip the door to get in or out or to grab a piece of gear near the door. I didn't realize how often I simply unzip across the bottom of a tent door to reach in and out until camping in this tent. This design flaw also creates a tall threshold that is problematic when trying to slide your feet out to put on your shoes and trips you up when getting in and out in the middle of the night. The second flaw is that the doors are on the long sides of the tent. We bought this to replace a 4 person tent that was getting tight as our two kids are getting older. Unfortunately, to take advantage of the extra space we have to sleep side by side across the long side of the tent, which means the two people in the middle have to climb over the people on the ends if they need to get out. If we sleep the other way, we have no more space than our 4 person tent with a ton of space at our feet or head, which is not needed given the huge vestibule attached out front. The third flaw is that a lot of warmth is lost through the mesh front door into the vestibule. I can see where this would be nice during warm evenings, but for colder camping it creates too much of a draft. I would call this a late spring through early fall tent more than a 3 season tent. Forth flaw--and we didn't have this issue, but could see where it would be a problem--the roll-up windows in the rain fly roll up from the outside so if it rains unexpectedly at night, you would have to go outside and get soaked putting the windows down, or get soaked inside by having them open. This isn't a huge deal, but something to consider. Finally, the bag it comes in is just sad. It has no zipper and barely fits the tent unless rolled to perfection. It's like packing it in a large canvas grocery bag. Wish I could recommend, but too many problems for the price tag.

Bummer

I always trust The North Face brand but this time they made us unhappy. I bought this tent after reading good reviews but it needs lots of development in terms of usability. First, there is not any electric cable opening on the canopy. So you have to use either back or front door, which keeps small opening for bugs. Second, the main gate is net and has no extra layer to cover, you have no privacy, also we always use small fan for cold nights at the tent and we couldn't keep the warm air inside, since the screening porch's bottom is fully open. Third, back gate's net was put inside of the tent. Luckily back gate has both net and canopy layer. But if you want to open it for extra ventilation, first you need to unzip the net and then canopy gate, so all flies/bugs welcomed. My $50 tent had all these thoughtful design implementations, I can't understand how The North Face brand could underestimate user experience on this product.

Comfortable tent and easy setup

My partner and I set this tent up in the dark and had no issues. It slept very comfortably and even though we were camping in heat and humidity. The “mud room” or whatever you want to call the room with the rain fly was great for helping keep bugs out. The multiple entrances in both the tent and the rain fly were great.

A good tent, some confusing design choices

We've taken 4 trips with this now and it is a decent tent. This is the first new tent I have purchased. The large front vestibule has been great. It's rained almost every time we camped, and being able to get up at 3am when you hear rain coming, stumble out in the dark and just haphazardly to throw all our gear that was left out under the vestibule without needing to give thought to "how am I going to fit this stuff in here" has saved us from wet gear every time. That said, we have a dog that is pretty reactive to squirrels. The front of the tent sans the vestibule only has a zippered screen, with no solid flap to close it off from view. So if you want any privacy out of the front of the tent, you HAVE to attach the vestibule. This is slightly unfortunate, because if we know it's not going to rain, we still have to put the vestibule up so the dog doesn't launch herself out the front of the tent in the morning after a squirrel. You CAN have the vestibule on but remove just the part of the fly that goes over the top of the tent. The vestibule gets a little loose since the two are attached, and some clever work with the guylines could probably fix that, but I haven’t bothered. When we’ve slept with the rain fly all the way on, the interior walls of the tent get VERY wet with condensation. Like you brush against it with your leg and your leg is soaked. Not a huge fan of that. The poles are super light and feel really high quality. The stakes are about as cheap as they get, I’ve bent three of them already. The footprint is a necessity imo, and should’ve been included, but the floor of this tent is not robust enough that i’d want to set it on bare ground. My last tent basically had the equivalent of a thick tarp as a floor. The floor of this tent is basically the same material as the sides. The back door is pretty useless, and it is annoying that the mesh door is on the inside, while the solid door is on the outside. This makes no sense at all: if you want to open it up for a breeze, you have to first open the ENTIRE door, then zip the mesh door back up. If it starts to rain, you also have to unzip the entire door before being able to zip the solid door back up. Because the pockets are built into that back door as well, any time you unzip it, all your stuff falls out. Poorly designed, but I wasn’t looking for a tent with a back door anyway, so I just keep it closed permanently. One of the times we went camping, it was in the high 80s also raining so we had to keep everything closed up, and it got SWELTERING in the tent. But there was very little breeze so I think it would’ve been the same with any tent, so I won’t fault it for that. Hope this can answer some questions you might have about this tent. I give it 4 stars, I think it’s high quality and will last awhile, but some extra design touches could’ve taken it to the 5 star mark.

Really nice Tent.

Delivered today and I just had to set it up. 12 MPH winds and single handedly managed to get everything tied down in 30 min. Rainfly was the most difficult, but not impossible. Like eveyone says, it's big. So many features and excellent quality workmanship you'd except from The North Face company. Looking forward to using it soon.

Sweet tent!

On our first camping trip this tent was perfect for a family of 4. With two little ones we fit well and had a bit of room for gear. The vestibule offered a perfect spot for the rest of our gear and additional space to move around. Beware of foot print from REI as it is either manufactured incorrectly or for a different model. We returned ours as the vestibule foot print would come out from wrong side but otherwise aligned with the tent. When returning the REI salesperson acted like we must have assembled the tent wrong. We reordered the foot print from North Face directly and it is the correct style and matches our tent.

Spacious and easy to set up

We've only taken it out once, to the very civilized Van Damme State Park, and the weather was dry and mild during our stay. We've never had such a big tent and wanted to see what it would be like. It's just the two of us in this beast, and there is room for our double air-mattress with room for gear bags on either side, and enough additional room between the mattress and the door to be able to change clothes while standing up (I'm six feet). The vestibule is about as big as another two-person tent all on its own. I liked that the zippers on the screen door work very smoothly with one hand. We put up the tent the first time without the instructions -- because the instructions were in the bag with the tent stakes, which of course we opened last. The beefy color-coded poles were easy to figure out though. My only grip about the poles is that the ends don't click into the grommets. You have to be delicate about keeping the poles properly seated before you push up the tent. We were lucky to have gotten a campsite big enough to accommodate the tent. The footprint is a real sasquatch and would not fit in a small site.

Great tent!

We purchased this tent as we wanted a larger tent for our family of 4 (two kids 6 and 2). We set it up once before using and that initial set up with two people only took 10 minutes. When we took hot for our first camping trip my husband set it ups by himself in 5 minutes. It really is an easy tent to assemble, I have no idea how it could take people longer than 10 minutes. The tent is awesome. It is spacious for a family of 4, the height is great for my tall husband, and ventilation is great on warm nights. You can close the vestibule and windows to keep it warmer inside, but we left our vestibule door open for more breeze. We love the big vestibule as we have a portable toilet there and can even set up our camp shower to hose off the kids. I am extremely happy with this purchase, would absolutely recommend!

Beautiful car camping tent,

Beautiful car camping tent! The additional space of the vestibule is excellent. It takes 2 people to setup, it's not that difficult, the Dak poles help. The orange us a gorgeous rusty color ... the ventilation is really great and so nice to see the stars at night!

My husband and I fell in love with this thing.

We bought this while on the road after our truck camper fell apart on the highway (ha!). When we first put it up in Joshua Tree, we were slightly embarrassed because it seemed so huge compared to everyone else's tents. One neighbor even warned us that it would blow away LOL. We tied it down with rocks and boulders, and it stayed put! We soon fell in love with the spaciousness, the fact we could STAND inside of it, we even set up our cook station inside the rain fly front area. It was AWESOME, especially when it RAINED! It's just the best tent ever. We decided it would come with us on road trips when we camp in the back of our truck because it's so useful for dressing, storage, inclement weather, etc. Let the haters hate!
