The ultimate layering piece!

I really like this jacket! 4.5 stars. It’s very lightweight and great under a down jacket or even a waterproof outer layer. The hoodie is very warm for the weight thanks to the gridded interior fabric that seems to trap warmth, but is still very breathable. It’s the kind of jacket you can toss into your pack “just in case” and forget you have it because it’s so light and takes up very little room. I haven’t been able to get out to climb any mountains since receiving the hoodie, but can imagine that this is a great alpine layer. The hood is quite large- I even fit a wide brimmed Tilley hat underneath it, so a climbing helmet would definitely fit. The thumb loops are a great feature; it really stays in place. It’s a slim fit but slightly longer in the back so it keeps the rear end warm. The zip goes all the way to the mid face. The size large fits me perfectly (5’10”, ~160, curvy). My ONLY disappointment is that it doesn’t have more pockets, however it’s really not meant to be a jacket you wear around town or an outer layer. Having only one pocket keeps it lighter too (for the UL folks). It does have a nice breast pocket that fits a phone/keys/chapstick. Overall, this hoodie is WAY more than a “hoodie”. It’s a nice layering piece that will keep you toasty on the mountain when worn with an outer shell. It can also be worn on its own and will keep you warm and dry, even in strong wind (think PNW beach weather in March), light rain, or on a chilly late winter/early spring day. It’s surprisingly lightweight for the warmth and fits perfectly in a small backpack. It’s my go-to jacket nowadays!

The fabric was so stiff and scratchy I couldn't stand to wear it. Minus the side pockets. Why would I want this and for $180?

Amazing fit and function!

The Black Diamond Coefficient fleece is the perfect active hoodie or midlayer! It's lightweight, stretchy, and both warm but not too warm. I was able to wear this hoodie traveling and going in and out of cold and warm temps it remained comfortable. It's a great layer by itself for hiking or other active pursuits. The outer material can block some wind and light rain and it's really stretchy to move with you. But it's light enough to fit nicely under a shell to use as a midlayer. What I love the most about this jacket is how flattering the fit is without being tight! It's got a great length to it and it fits loosely but is still contoured enough to look fitted and forms nicely to the body. My only complaint is I wish it had side pockets. It has one chest pocket though. Everything else about this jacket is perfection!

Great second layer hoodie

I wore this hoodie instead of my usual long-sleeve fleecy shirt as a second layer on a recent backpacking and peakbagging trip in the Sierra. I liked having the full length zipper, so I could vent it or close it up, depending on my activity level and changing conditions. I liked the length, down to my hips, which helped it stay in place under my backpack, and the hood, which didn't impede my vision and worked fine with other hoods and my hat. Because of the waffle-like weave, it made a good second layer, breathing well but also adding warmth. Comfortable thumb holes. It had a slim fit, which works well for me, though I noticed a tendency for the first layer to bunch up somewhat in the armpits (this was more true with a cotton t-shirt around town and a thin, loose sun shirt on the trail––less true with a tech tee and a long-sleeve tech shirt). My phone fit well in the chest pocket. The one glaring fault for me was the lack of hand-warmer pockets, but if I had been using it under another layer, that wouldn't have been an issue. If I wore it running, on the other hand, I'd probably be glad there weren't pockets to catch my thumbs! It looks nice for around town and was quite functional on the trail. I also wore it on a walk and bit of exercise near home. It was just right as a layer, especially because I could put the hood up or down and open or close the zipper to stay comfortable. I look forward to using it as a layer when I ski.

Great for cold weather!

The Black Diamond Fleece Hoodie keeps the wind and cold out. It is a snug fit and is great alone as an under layer. I was only able to try it in warmer weather, it's perfect for the in-between temperatures. I love hiking in colder weather and can't wait for winter again!

Lightweight and comfortable!

This lightweight hoodie is comfortable, stretchy and moves with you. The soft fleece lining is surprisingly warm. I like that it zips up to your chin keeping your neck and head warm with its form-fitting hood. It’s been perfect in the cool fall mornings when walking the dog. It also washes and dries well. The thumb loops and smooth outside material make it easy to wear under a lined coat. It’s a nice lightweight jacket and doesn’t take up much room to pack. I'm glad it has a zippered pocket. I just wish it was located lower and not over the breast. It's fine for small items such as a driver's license, but is a little awkward with a set of keys.

Great for walks & hikes

I love the slim profile of this jacket because it makes it very flattering. Initially, I was disappointed that there weren’t side pockets but that probably helps keep the profile slim. There is a chest pocket I found useful for carrying my ID & cards. The jacket is on the thinner side & it makes it easy to keep in a backpack when going on hikes & doesn’t take up much room. The material is soft & gently hugs the body. It did a great job of keeping me warm during cold weather & not hot; I felt toasty without ever getting hot & sweaty. I appreciate the thumbholes so I don’t have to keep pulling the sleeves down while being active. This is now my favorite jacket! I look forward to wearing this again during cooler weather. (I received this product as a REI Product Advisor in exchange for my honest review.)

Great for hiking trails in mild weather!

The fleece hoodie has several attributes: the hoodie is exceptionally styled to provide hands-free hiking while providing protection from the wind (even for those, who like me, hike wearing a baseball cap). It's contour design allows full peripheral vision in all terrains. The zipper front allows for excess ventilation while hiking uphill in full sun, then allowing a quick zip up turning into wind or going downhill. Ventilation throughout allows for comfortable fit wearing a pack and also knowing that sweat is not running down my back but is wicked away as planned. It's rugged design holds up against wear and tear vs nature or beast (young, rowdy dogs that is). I've worn it as a light outer layer and under windbreaker/water resistant jacket. As someone who is naturally cool before starting big climbs, it's not a layer that I would necessarily wear for easy hiking or at a campsite unless the temperature was warmer. Also, due to the length, in colder weather I would swap this out for a shorter light fleece sweater to wear under another heavier layer. As to the negative comments I have: there's absolutely no contouring to this - I would likely walk right by it hanging in the store, and when the hoodie is up the zipper is on my chin - it's rather scratchy material. I realize that's how the hood stays up in wind, so it's more of an adaptation than a critique (perhaps material will soften with ensuing washes). Aside from the lack of style, my other - but more serious - critique is the amount of chemical sprayed onto this piece of clothing. I don't know all of the regulations, but they need to change. I go hiking to celebrate my health in Nature; I don't go to pray that I don't get cancer while wearing active wear from a reliable outdoor company. Even after washing, I would not put this in my backpack for any hiking adventure. As a trained scientist with a sensitive nose, I am grateful that I don't have asthma. But could I recommend this to someone who's health possibly isn't as good as mine?

Good but needs pockets

This is a decent product. Good quality, comfortable. Feels light, yet sturdy and warm, although the weather hasn't allowed me to test out yet how well it does when the temperature really drops. One big flaw for which it gets a major full star drop - no side pockets. It has one breast zip-up pocket, but it's not nearly enough. I know this is a more active wear product, but even so, it would be nice to be able to use it for other activities where I can carry things with me. It's frustrating that even today, so many companies still insist on designing women's clothing lacking in pocket space. Other than that, while I wouldn't enthusiastically endorse the product, I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from getting it either.

Thin and warm!

I love this jacket. It is warm without being bulky. The fit and length are great. It’s comfortable, durable, and functional. The one thing that’s missing…pockets! I would wear this jacket more if there were any pockets.
