How to Choose Insulated Outerwear

So compact and light, there's no reason to leave the Arc'teryx Atom SL insulated hoodie behind. It works well as a mid-layer in cool conditions or as an outer layer during rest breaks or summit bids.

I own 5 Arcteryx jackets and all are top-notch quality. However, this one is disappointing and extremely poorly made. I exchanged one, but the same deal, so I think it is the manufacturer general problem. Share some pictures. If you are expecting good quality, I would not recommend it, but if you can live with it, good design jacket.

Hi, this product is a must buy for me . I bought it before my trip to wales in august and since then I’ve been on multiple climbs where it had poured with rain and the jacket has kept me warm and and dry for the whole time . The durability is immense as it can withstand so much more than described . I am very impressed with how it held up again storms when climbing snow don on multiple occasions . Highly recommend this item . The only thing I would like that could improve this piece of clothing is if it had a little inside pocket which would be perfect for a protein bar or phone . Thank you Arc’teryx
Very good material, it weighs very little and warm enough to do intense physical exercise. With a thermal t-shirt and this model you can go out at Zero Degrees Celsius without problem
I've had this jacket for one summer so far. It's a perfect all arounder for me! It feels like a soft comfy long sleeve although it's technically a jacket. In the summer temps it's perfect and i've found that It's actually a really good jacket for biking and hiking! I can fit it under another down later on cold nights and it doesn't feel like you are wearing too much. I enjoy taking this as a business jacket during travel and on airplanes as it's very versatile and keeps me from overheating or getting cold inside.
I bought this item before going out to Colorado for the summer and have nothing but positive things to say about it. I tend to run very warm (especially while moving) and finally found a jacket I can when hiking/scrambling at high altitudes. No more reaching for a light puffy that I know will make me sweat the moment I put it on, no more grunting it out by moving too fast to stay warm. I'm pleased to say I used this item climbing Maroon Bells, Castle, and La Plata and felt perfectly fine the whole time. Additionally, it also works perfectly for cool summer nights in the low 50s, and it's so light I pretty much always forget I'm wearing it!
Over the last couple of month, while the weather was slowly getting warmer I wore this jacket on about a dozen of walks and hikes here in the Pacific Northwest. While I was hesitant at first, I fell in love with the lightness and versatility of this piece of gear. It's super-light, breathable but warm, protects from a moisture and the material gives you tons of freedom to move. In usual Arc'teryx fashion all the details are spot on. The seams, the zippers, the hood, everything is well thought out and the finishes are excellent. This has quickly become my all-around jacket to seamlessly transition from an urban walk to a springtime hike.
(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) This was my first Arc'teryx piece. I bought this last year with the Kyanite fleece sweater. Great combo to wear during fall & spring & even during colder summer nights. This jacket is so comfortable that I could wear it all day even while working in front of my computer desk. The fleece panel under the wrist to the waist is super well thought out. The articulation on the cuffs is just great. I do wish it was even more articulated! The hand pockets is a bit higher than I had expected however it's not a pro nor con of this piece. I would recommend the LT version to be more versatile and would probably get more use out of Toronto weather. Overall, it's a solid jacket and great fitting piece for me.
I have been able to put this jacket through multiple conditions this shoulder season: From light snow and wind at 12,000ft to a light breeze in the Santa Fe woods to airplanes and climbing rock as the sun sets in New England. This packs down small enough to throw in a cinch bag and carry on a harness as well capable enough to break the wind just enough on the fall nights to keep you warm on your descent from the alpine. I highly recommend this jacket - I will HIGHLY stress that this is a superlight (SL) jacket and that comes with the notion that grams are shaved to make it as light as possible and that comes with some drawbacks. The zippers and pockets are all up to Arcteryx quality - I have seen a couple of stitching issues right around the wrists where you might pull harder than you want but overall, this thing is a must. I think if you love being fast and light but also prepared this is the perfect jacket for windy days, chillier fall and spring days and also as a mid-layer for ice climbing with a shell on if it is not blistering cold.
We have had a very cool, windy and wet spring this year and this jacket has fit the bill perfectly. This jacket offers the right amount of insulation and wind and precipitation protection for a mid 50 degree windy day with a few pop-up showers during a day on the water. I'm 5' 9" and 190 and the large was a nice fit, snug by not tight which will allow additional layering. The sleeves are longer allowing them to come down over the top of your hands and which ensures they will not pull up when reaching over your head. The jacket is light weight and easily packable making this the perfect choice for use on outing with cooler mornings and evenings. The insulation is concentrated on the chest and back a thinner stretchy and breathable material on the sides which offers more mobility and better temperature regulation as your activity level increases. The light weight hood with the draw cord and integrated bill is a nice feature providing protection from wind and precipitation without causing you to overheat.
This jacket is underrated. It’s the perfect mid-level jacket for the in between seasons of spring and fall. I even find myself reaching for it on cool summer evenings. Because the SL is the lightweight and pared down version of its much more popular sibling the Atom LT, you don’t get the fuss and bells and whistles like an internal breast pocket, it still does the trick of staving off the chill and provides just enough breathability to support a quick run in cooler weather. For extra protection it throw on a hard shell and I’m good for a windy/rainy winter day. Yes it packs down well and provides a solid emergency layer when the temps unexpectedly dips.
