As soon as I got this bag I was stoked! But didn’t want to write a review until I had a chance to really try it. After spending 2 months hiking in Idaho,Wyoming, Montana I have to say I love this bag and all the features! The size is kinda big for a day pack, But that’s what I was looking for. I purposely overloaded this bag With hammocks, Helinox chairs, stove etc to have epic picnics in Glacier, GTNP, and Yellowstone and it carried well. Did several hammock overnight trips in it with a ton of room to spare. Features are smart, what you would expect from Osprey. Has all the features of a heavy haul pack in a size 44L. Sizing is generous Got the L,XL and it fits really well. The only changes I would make and it’s not enough to shave a star off is I would have liked a longer zipper on the lid, there’s plenty of room in the brain just the access zipper is a little short which is a little tough getting things out. Also the side stretchy pockets have 2 access points, the angled ones work great however when you put your Nalgene in vertically it’s a little tough getting it out, especially when pack is loaded. Overall If your an oz counter and minimalist, this bag may not be for you. If you want a comfy bag with loads of features check this one out!
I just received this pack a few days ago but have been day hiking most every day since with it. So far I am very happy with it. It's replacing a 25L day pack to be my day and a half bag. Mostly plan to use for day hikes but there is so much room can easily make an overnight to a couple of nights bag. Once I have the rest of my backpacking equipment I'll probably update this with a review after I've spent a couple overnights in it! But so far nothing but good things to say about this bag! I do intend to get a larger pack in the future but wanted something I could get more than 1 use out of for right now.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Tremendous versatility and durability. I love the fit and adjustability over the course of a long day. Ample space for a multi day hike or walk like the Camino de Santiago. Highly recommended.
One of the reasons I decided on this particular model: "Top loading main compartment can be accessed from full-length vertical side zipper for easy organization and loading; separate sleeping bag compartment with removable divider." This is false. It does not have a vertical side zipper and does not have a removable divider. Maybe the L/XL has these features, but the S/M certainly does not.
this has been my go to pack for the last 4 years. anything from a day hike to multiday trips I haven't been let down. Recently I even completed the JMT with this pack. Yes a bear vault 500 will fit laterally inside the pack but you will be to the gills with this thing. I would just pack my sleeping bag and pad at the bottom, then place the bear vault inside and just stuff everything else around it and on top. My tent would go between the brain and the body with the middle strap and the brain holding it in place, and the poles I would keep in the water side pocket with my smart water. That said, I would only recommend this pack as a multi day/ multi week pack to people who have their gear UL and dialed in though.. no room for luxury items but just enough for doing something like the JMT. if your just out on a weekend with something like the smaller bear vault or no bear can at all, you will have more than enough room to take some luxuries. this is a pack that eliminates the need for multiple packs, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
It does a good job distributing the weight of the pack into your lower body. I have put up to 40 lbs into the pack. It had well placed pouches and attachments for accessories. Straps were easy to use and reach. Material holds well when stretched out and fully packed. Fit well for being a short person. Some things that I wish were different. I had to place my hydration reservoir in the outermost mesh bag because it wouldn't fit in the area directly behind my back. The water bottle side sleeves are impossible to get to while it's on you. I ended up clipping on my water bottle to a side strap within reach.
Let's go back in time, to the year 2000. You walk into an REI and tell the sales associate you want something that's a day pack for long day hikes, to hold the usual items, maybe some extra food, clothing. But you also want something that can double as a backpack, for light overnight trips, maybe 2 days if you go minimal in temperate weather. The sales associate has a stone look on their face. "I'm sorry, but packs don't work like that. You either buy a day pack. Or you buy a back pack. The are not similar, enough, and they likely never will be." You walk out of the store, disappointed. Time warp back to the 2020's, and you're in an REI, where the sales associate doesn't blink at your request, and takes you to...you got it, this pack. There are similar sized and styled packs out there, even some by Osprey. But I can't think of many that really split the difference right down the middle as this pack. It has daypack features like non-rigid frame, quite light-weight, relatively small size, and able to cinch down if needed to compress it, and no real bulk. But backpack features like a dedicated sleeping bag compartment, a large enough padded hip belt, a top lid (brain), and adjustable torso size. If you're like a LOT of people out there, who like to go on long day hikes, or with a kid, or partner, or a dog, or in winter or sketchy weather when you'll need to carry extra stuff. This pack is perfect. It also does pretty well on just a regular half-day hike, as it's not very bulky. All the same, there are a LOT of people out there who don't want to go on epic backpack trips. 5-10 miles from the trail head for one night is plenty, this pack is the perfect size for that. So much so, this could be your only pack. There aren't a heck of a lot of packs you can say that about. The one thing I will caution people about, due to its mostly daypack origins in the frame (the Talon is a day pack line-up, but this 44 is not like the others in many ways), this pack, while very comfortable with 20 or so pounds in it, is not built for a heavy load. You start to get 30+ pounds in it and it's going to feel like you're carrying sandbags and water bottles. There are more technical type packs out there for example designed just for that purpose about this volume. But those don't double as good day packs well just the same.
Great multi day, I packed a quilted sleeping bag, tent, trekking poles, water supply, weeks worth of food supply, weeks worth of socks and undershirts, two pants and various other items. They all fit great and the adjustment straps make everything well balanced. I got the smaller size, but I wouldn’t recommend the smaller size unless you’re really petite. This is coming from someone who is short; I have trouble getting my arms through the arm straps.
Used this up in the Boundary Waters for it’s first trip. Had lots of rain and water covering it while paddling and everything inside stayed dry. Was super glad to have a comfortable pack during our long portages. Will recommend this pack to everyone I know!
I have backpacked hundreds of miles thru the years using a few different packs. I was hoping to trek the Camino Frances route early this summer, but a close family member has serious health issues, so I had to put that trip on hold. I bought this mid-size pack a few months ago and have been training with it fully loaded… as if I were leaving for France tomorrow. I just love how it fits my body, the multiple easily accessed gear pockets, the 2-water bottle sleeves & misc. outer straps. Well made & sold at a very reasonable on sale price when I bought it. I remain a happy REI member.
