Good pants, just not as good as the old version
These are good quality and fit my skinny kids well. They may not work well for huskier kids. We ordered some a couple years ago and loved them. While still pretty good the design has changed and we don’t like them nearly as much. The color is more brown than green now (Got the dark army cot). The adjustable waist elastic is much shorter, only in the back now so we can’t cinch them down as much. The zipper on the leg only goes up a few inches, not the full length it used to. Also a button instead of snap closure on the waist, which isn’t an issue for us but if you are looking for little kids. . . We’ll still probably keep them but I wish I would have ordered one in each size when I got them before. . . Oh well..

Hard to fit husky boys
My 9 year old son is short and robust around the waist so buying pants is always a nightmare. We first tried on a 10/12 (M) and the length and leg fit was perfect! But he couldn't get it zipped or buttoned and the adjustable waist was already fully extended so no wiggle room. I was hoping he could at least zip it and I could get him a button extender. We went up to the 14/16 (L) and the waist, while a bit loose, would fit with some adjusting of the button adjustors, but the leg length was insanely long! It almost looked like an extra 2' of length was added from one size to the next! The amount of material dragging on the floor was insane. He was so disappointed because he really wanted the convertible hiking pants but we had to settle for stretchy non-convertible pants. We looked at the girls option since the waist is elastic but the shorts on the girls pants are much shorter than the boys option. It's a bit ridiculous that the girls get an option of an elastic waist band but the boys don't and that it's expected that girls are going to want to wear short-shorts vs the more bermuda length of the boys version. Because of the zippered lower leg I wouldn't have been able to easily hem the larger size to fit his shorter legs as my sewing skills are limited and we didn't have time for a tailor to alter them before we needed them for our trip. I wish REI and clothing companies offered more options for huskier, shorter boys who like to get out in our beautiful parks and hike but don't want to wear the short-shorts offered to girls.

Good idea, terrible fabric

Love the style and convertible idea, but fabric is not durable at all. My son was kneeling on the floor and turned around on one knee, and just spinning around once on the floor tore a hole in the knee! He can still wear these as shorts in the summer, but they're ruined as pants after less than a month. He's had many pairs of similar lightweight Kuhl Renegade pants that held up to over a year of wear. I was hoping these REI pants would replace his Kuhl pants (as I can no longer find them), but instead, he now has just another pair of shorts.

Sahara lover giving up!

For MANY years my favorite pants were Sahara convertibles. I wish I had bought more pairs to stockpile for the future, but I thought REI is a quality company and they will keep up standards on this staple product. VERY disappointed in 2021 iterations I tried on. Small. Thinner fabric. Cargo pockets too small to carry anything !!! Is the purchaser for these pants trying to sabotage the product? I have one pair of Kuhl Renegade, which are nice but PRICEY substitute. I will trawl through Ebay to find gently used older Sahara I guess. *sigh*

Nice Fabric, Awkward Fit

Received free product

My 16 year old son tried these out in a size 18, and I wouldn't strongly recommend them. The fabric is great but the cut wasn't suited to his body and I don't think they're designed well for more than casual activity. My nson inherited my bubble butt and these aren't at all built to accommodate it. The waist was a bit loose (and the belt loops were too small for his usual belt) and the pants were a bit more snug in the rear than would work for active hiking or anything. There also isn't any gusset or extra fabric built in for range of movement, so forget scrambling up rocks. We'll keep these pants around as something to have on hand but overall I wouldn't consider them a good option for active teens.

Durable & Versatile Boys Pants

Received free product

Finally, pants that can keep up with my son. These not only work for him for all seasons, but are rugged and comfortable. He likes how he can use them for anything from comfortably sitting in circle time on the floor at school (versus his jeans) to climbing trees. I also appreciate these three things: durability, flexibility for temperature fluctuations, and the built in adjustable waist straps (since he does not have the patience to wear a belt daily). Another bonus is that they are are true to size and he will be able to keep these around for awhile because he has plenty of room to grow with them.

Smart Pant for Hiking and Backpacking

Smart hiking and backpacking pant! Adjustable interior waist buttons for slim kids. Zipper for legs are two different colors for quick match-up and these pants dry quickly! My boys use it for scouting, the green color is perfect for their uniform and the price is reasonable, considering scout pants cost about the same if not more. Pockets, forgot to mention that the pockets are just the right size. My boys are 100-107 lbs about 5ʻ3 and the XL was perfect for them. Belt loops also fit thier scouting belt. I also got the XXL for them as theyʻll grow in to it pretty quickly.

So may things to like!

Received free product

Both my boys (ages 6 and 4) liked these pants. They are comfortable for all day wear. Lightweight enough that they should be comfortable in the summer for hiking, but sturdy enough for school. The boys love zipping off the legs to transform them into shorts. We've washed them twice, and it seems like they will hold up well. I appreciate that they don't need special treatment and can go in with our normal laundry loads. I love the buttons and elastic to adjust the waist for a customized fit, no need to trouble with a belt, though there are also belt loops. The zipper at the ankle is a great help over boots and shoes. They look great, both as pants and and shorts. We are pleased!

Not worth the full price

I got these for a recent trip and the fit was good for my son but they didn't prove to be durable enough. The fabric is very thin and tore where his pop socket was. My guess is when he slipped between a few rocks on the trail he inadvertently rub his leg on the rock and they tore. For the price I paid they are not worth returning but if you are expecting to get a lot of trail use out of these with some abuse I wouldn't count on it. They do however dry pretty quick and were fairly comfortable, I just think they could have been a little thciker or more abrasion resistant.

Good, durable pants for kids

Received free product

These are a nice pair of durable pants for kids. They have plenty of pockets and easily convert into shorts. Another GREAT feature that they have for younger ones is the adjustable waist. If you buy a bit on the larger side you may get more wear time for your money. The green color is also quite compatible with a scout uniform, which is another added bonus. Overall, we are happy with them.
