Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

This is all I wore on my AT thru hike- I went through almost 4 pairs, each lasting 500+ miles. I was thankful to never have had discomfort in my feet from my shoes, a common problem on the trail. These shoes are very breathable which means they drain water fast- a very good characteristic when walking through ankle deep water for miles on end. The other great part about them is that the toe box is really wide, so you don't end up with squished toes on the long downhills! I also wear these shoes for trail running and have loved their performance in that setting as well.
Received my order within 2 business days after I placed this order. When I received the package, I opened to inspect immediately cause this shoes is going to be my wife's birthday gift. However, it's not a brand new item; IT'S BEEN USED! I am very disappointed about this issue. This review is not about the product but the service quality of the REI. (Already sent email to REI and waiting for their response.)
I switched to these from some Salomon trail runners I had purchased from a garage sale several years ago. I use trail runners for all non-winter hiking, but don't really *run* in them (yet). I originally bought a 7.5 (my street shoe size) but after one wear ended up sizing down, because the larger shoe box didn't feel as great on my narrow foot. Once I sized down to a 7 though everything has been perfect--no blisters, aches, etc. The shape did take a little getting used to, but now anything else feels weird lol. I primarily used these for mountain scrambles and long hikes in Montana, and the traction/light weight is amazing for this. The only downside is that the rocks beat them up pretty quickly (see photos), but if you aren't doing a lot of rock scrambling they should last longer. I put 17 I can probably get at least one more summer out of them. Most of my climbing/hiking partners also wear Altras and we all love them!!
The everyday wears this shoes perfectly for my wide foot.
Great trail running shoes. Well made. Lasted the entire school season then some! My middle school granddaughter was very happy with these Trail Running shoes. Great customer service at this REI store. The clerk took the time to measure my granddaughter’ foot and asked what we were using them for. Made recommendations based on our input. Well fitted shoes. Very happy with this purchase. Going to order another pair for her TODAY.
I was previously using Merrill Moabs but on longer hikes I found I was struggling with what felt like the bones in the balls of my feet rubbing, very painful! I went with Altra for the toe box and these did not disappoint! I wore them with little break in time hiking for a week in Shenandoah NP and on the AT in sections of NH. Great on wet rocks and roots and during one river crossing, a loose rock slipped and my feet were in the water, even in September they didn't feel soaked all day and dried fairly well. I don't have enough superlatives to describe these! I love them so much that I just purchased the Lone Peak 4 waterproof mids for winter!
I use this for trail running- ultra distances. I won't stray from Altra/ Lone Peak bc the fit is incomparable. Last two-ish years, quality has diminished. Shoe is not lasting a season & far less miles
I had previously written that I was going to go with the Olympus instead because it was more cushioned. I was scared to go for a "barefoot" looking shoe like the Lone Peak since I previously wore hiking boots rather than trail shoes to hike. However, trying both styles on at home, I found that my heel slipped with the Olympus, but didn't in the Lone Peak. I took the Lone Peaks out for a trial run (actually hike) today, a good mix of dirt trail and scrambling up rocks. They served me so well! I absolutely love them. 5 stars. P.S. I do plan to purchase a pair of insoles from my local shop for some added stability, but that's about it.
I have wide feet and it is very difficult to find any kind of shoe that fits. I wanted hiking boots to support my ankles, but the two highly rated hiking boots I tried became unbearable after 2 miles into a hike. I had to return them both. I hesitated buying trail runners with less protection, but out of desperation I tried the Altria’s. They feel like slippers on my feet and I can finally enjoy my hikes! I still worry about my ankles, but I figure I have less chance of hurting myself when I am not hobbling around in pain. I appreciate that Altra makes some women’s shoes in a wide width. It would be great to have more options to choose from.
I love the toe room on these shoes. My only complaint is that the footing is too soft. I am used to my salomons x ultra hiking shoes which feels super supported and very light weight. and really the best shoes in the world. However, after surgery, my feet are super swollen and these shoes are the only ones that are comfortable other than crocs. If and when this company decides to create hiking shoes that aren't super soft then that would be the day they become better than Salomons. be careful walking/hiking downhill. because the toe room is huge, my feet slide a lot in the shoes downhill. I didn't have any problems uphill or on flat ground.
