Infuriating snap design defeats purpose
I got this because I figured it’d be easier/better/cleaner than using a bandana as a p cloth. It’s not really because the snap design is so infuriating. You cannot undo the loop to remove the cloth from your pack without unfolding the cloth (dirty side is inside the folded part) which defeats the purpose of it folding in the first place. Like why wouldn’t the loop snap on the outside after it’s folded? You fold it closed after you dab dry, then it’s damp on the inside and you have to unfold it while it’s damp to get it back on your pack. It’s so poorly designed! It also creates so many steps to getting it on and off your pack! it’s such a bad design, I’m annoying myself just writing this review… and for $20!!!! Additionally it grabs onto and shows discharge so starkly ..and depending on where you are in your cycle there can be quite a lot so it honestly looks like the gusset of a dirty pair of underwear after you use it just one time. Imagine wiping with the gusset of dirty panties, that’s what using this is like. I think a bandana cut in half would fare better but I feel too weird about returning this so I might keep using it? Maybe I should just put it clean into a ziploc bag and return it and not feel too weird… I really wanted to love it :(
Works great. Comes with an entire community too.
I love my Kula cloth. Connect it to my pack or day pack with a retractable key/card lanyard, so it's always at hand when needed. Does exactly what it says, keeps my hand clean/dry, wipes the area nicely so it cuts down on my TP use/carry requirement, dries out between uses because of the air-flow while snapped closed and is easy to rinse at the end of the day. A Kula cloth also comes with a completely zany community, comprised of the founder and her sister, who are hilarious anti-marketing geniuses along with a legion of users/fans. Look them up on Instagram if you are curious. I have bought a number as gifts, everyone has love them.
First time using on trail, would recommend BUT!!!
I bought a Kula Cloth to give it a try because I've heard a few friends mention it. Me and my Fiancé hike a lot of miles and we hate to stop very long to potty (reason I purchased) I found the Kula Cloth very difficult to un snap from my backpack, also you have to open the peed on cloth before you can remove the loop that snaps it to your bag (I would definitely change this)... while wiping with the cloth I still felt like I was really wet after wiping. This may be good for a day hike, but I am concerned about taking it for an overnight trip again or a multi-day backpacking trip. But I plan on trying it a couple more times before giving up on the product.
Great Product!
As with many reviewers here, the snaps are the main issue for this not being a 5-star review. I picked this up a couple years back and used it on many day hikes or 1-2 night trips, mostly in the desert of Utah or mountains of Colorado. Then the real test was a two-week backpacking trip in Alaska. It was MONEY (aside from the snaps)! I washed it out every 3-4 days, and usually wash it every 3-4 hikes. Works like a charm. Much better than my drip-drying days. It has never emitted a foul odor, so not sure if other reviewers had asparagus prior to using, but my cloth has never smelled gross. I will plop down another $20 for a second one once the snap issue gets fixed.
love it- truly game-changing in the backcountry
I have been backpacking/kayak-camping/bike-camping and otherwise spending time in the outdoors for 30+ years now and rarely get that impressed with new 'gear'. The kula cloth is AWESOME. I was leading an 8-day backpacking trip where TP needed to be packed out, and my kula cloth reduced that used TP dramatically. No smell, I kept my folded and snapped closed in my pocket during the day (easier to grab when needed) and let it hang dry on my tent/pack at night (no real wildlife concerns as I was on a bear-free island). SO much better than just dripping dry! Ran it through the wash before the trip and again after, rinsed it with water once in the middle of the trip and it was awesome.
New fav piece of gear!
My husband laughed at me when I told him I was spending $20 on a rag. I want to shout from the mountains with glee, it's like the sound of music hiking with me now. I will sing it's praise to anyone that will listen. I want one for the car, one for backpacking and car camping. Why has this never existed before? Get one, get five! You won't regret it.
why didn't I think of this?
Got this for camping, but soon switched to using it full time. I have 2; I rinse them every few days and throw them in the washer when I have a load (I put my Dr. Bronners for the whole load directly on the Kula, to help with the smell). Sure, it smells a bit like urine after a day or two if you put your nose right up to it...but you don't have to put your nose right up to it! If it gets noticeable and you're not doing a wash yet you can splash some vinegar on it (that counteracts the smell). So great not to be chopping down old trees for a few drops of urine, and now I go through only about a roll a month of TP.
Indispensable!
This product has straight up changed the way I experience the outdoors. It makes me feel clean and comfortable in the backcountry desert where you can't always find a smooth leaf or fluffy moss to get the job done! It has made me ready to spend even more time outdoors without worrying about hygiene issues, infections, or allergic reactions to /natural/ TP. Plus it's made by women for women -- ladies rejoice!
Encourages Hydration!
Ever since I got my Kula Cloth, I've been drinking a lot more water on trail and haven't had so many headaches after long hikes. I don't know if it's because this makes my bathroom breaks quicker (no more handling multiple bags and searching through pockets to pack out TP) or if it's because I'm excited about a new product, but I am more likely to take bathroom breaks when needed --> not limiting my water intake! I have the black cloth since this used to be the only option REI carried, and it's not hard to tell the difference between which side you use as they have different textures. Even still, I love the new designs REI is carrying! This is a game-changer and an underrated piece of gear.
Best gear I bought this year!
I wish I had bought this sooner. This is so mush better than toilet paper or drip drying when out on the trail (or even camping). I highly recommend this product. It is easy to clean, doesn’t weigh much and is very convenient. I have used this during half a dozen hikes, and a couple camping trips so far and haven’t had any issues with the snaps on either the cloth or the strap. I do recommend buying 2 if you are going on extended multi day/night trips so that you can use one while cleaning the other. (Although these do dry quickly if you don’t want to buy 2). I love this product and believe it is worth the money!
