The brilliant Arcteryx LT Gamma Jacket
Definitely the best non waterproof jacket I've had so far in my life. I've used this jacket for everything from trekking, trail running, cross country skiinig, ice climbing & mountaineering, everyday use, and long days with the chainsaw taking down timber in the Norwegian mountains and forests. Brilliant breathability! Brilliant isolation under the Hybrid GTX jacket (similar to a thin flees) Brilliant flexibility when climbing / working. You wash it when it's full of dirt and it looks brand new after its dryed up. And yes! It dryes up very quickly. Highly recommend!
Good product, but materials quality could be better
It's a really good softshell. It might be not 100% windproof, neither crazy warm nor super light, but it quickly became one of the most used jacked I own. Simply because it's such a great allrounder. On the other side, I am a bit disappointed with a fabric that simply lost color whenever it is exposed to the sun. Much faster than any other outdoor gear I can think of. The inner pocket is a bit too small to fit a modern, medium-sized smartphone, which is a pity. But anything else is just great.
Best softshell!
I bought that jacket a few months ago. After that I'm still very exciting, because it's seriously the best soft shell which I had. Normally I'm walking through the city, through the mountains and forests often and in different weather. I don't know what is bad weather because I love nature and my country. Ok, some details. Firstly: perfect fit. Seriously. I read that arcteryx has a good fit, but it's more than good. In my opinion probably you don't believe me and I know why. It's my first jacket which has the perfect size. First, but not last. Next argument: breathing. Better than goretex but still waterproofing. I had few situations, when the weather was bad (cold snow in the mountain, rain in the city, snow + wind ..) and never, never I was had a problem. Ok, I know, you don't believe. Try on. Just try. I use that jacket in Poland. Maybe it's important for you. The weather in my country is crazy, so soft shell in my opinion is the perfect jacket and that soft shell from arcteryx is the perfect choice.
Superb Versatility
I've had this jacket for about 3 years and have used it for hiking, climbing and general use. It's a great piece - a little on the large size compared to the MX and longer in the body and arms. Its weight is ideal and with a layer (Cerium Lt) keeps you warm at altitude. Not the most windproof jacket but is fine if you keep moving. The hood works particularly well - it's large because it's helmet compatible - but easy to adjust, as in the picture. I've used it in the spring and summer mainly but also at altitude in the cold and it really is adaptable with plenty of room for layering. Arc'teryx soft shells seem to receive criticism in reviews about water resistance. I have no complaints - providing you apply DWR after every 3 to 4 washes - it sheds well and keeps the wet out in light/medium rain. I've had this jacket about 4 years now and it still looks brand new. It seems to have worn better than my MX despite being lighter material. It takes abuse well and the fabric has just the right amount of stretch. I'm a broad, athletic build (185cm, 95 kg) and brought XL, I felt L would not give enough room to layer.
Very niche jacket - didn't work for me
I bought this jacket hoping to use it as a more breathable alternative to a hard shell while skiing or snowshoeing. While I think it would probably work well for those, I did not like the jacket at all. The inside feels rough, so I wouldn't wear this without a long-sleeved base layer. I also really disliked the hood, although I fully understand why they designed it this way. It is so huge that you look silly while it's up. This is a shame because I wanted to also use it casually. Overall, it didn't work for me, but I could see it working great for someone else.
Versatile Jacket
I’m a 45yr old male, 5’8 and 170lbs and a medium fits well with room to layer. I like the jacket, but the arms are a few inches longer than I like for casual wear but it fills in better with a hoody or Atom LT underneath. As many have mentioned the hood is huge but can be cinched down for use without a helmet. I’ve used it for cycling and hiking with only a T-shirt in 5-18 degree Celcius but would be cold if you weren’t generating heat. I plan on using it in -10 Celsius conditions snowshoeing with a mid layer and confident it will perform well. DWR works well in light precip and this piece blocks the wind very well too!
Best jacket ever!
This is without a doubt the best jacket I have ever owned. And trust me, I’m a jacket freak! I used to have a lot of struggle finding the right jacket for spring and fall, where the temperatures are around 15-18 Celsius. Either it’s too hot or too cold. So I began with layers. Merino, a fleece and then the shell, whether it be the soft shell Gamma for trekking in dry weathers where the wind can suddenly cool you down or hard shell Beta SL for rainy days. Even a small shower is no problem for the Gamma LT as it dries very fast. The stretch is very handy when crawling around playing with my kids. I’d wish everyone could try one.
perfect jacket -query re. zipper
recently purchased this shoftshell and sofar content with it. however when closing zipper there is always a hitch /stop when reaching the upper seam . in fact the zipper moves featherlight from start but when reaching near the end it stops and have to wriggle a bit and increase tension a little to close completely . so this has me worried in that after some time there may be a problem where the zipper cannot move further to the end. if/when this would turn out to be so second worry is how to have this repaired or replaced .
Fantastic softshell for all occasions
I recently purchased the Gamma LT for an upcoming mountaineering trip and had a chance to take it through some varied environments. The biggest test was a cold hike in the Adirondacks with temps reaching 5F (-15C) and windchills down to -15F (-25C). I had on a 150 weight Smartwool base layer and a Patagonia expedition weight capilene hoody and I was toasty warm the majority of the hike. The only time I needed to throw on a hardshell was nearing some summits when the wind kicked up to 20-30 mph. You could definitely feel the wind coming through but performed alright at wind speeds less than that. The breathability was incredible. Even though I was warm I never felt moisture trapped inside. I live in NYC and use it as my go-to jacket for my daily commute. It looks stylish and I don't feel like I'm wearing a technical jacket going to dinner. I really put the jacket to the test during a downpour rainstorm. I walked 20 minutes with constant rain and the DWR beaded up the water and it ran right off the jacket. However, around the Arc'teryx logo, water seeped through and I could see a wet spot of the logo on my shirt upon taking off the jacket. I'd say this jacket will keep you quite dry for 30-45 minutes of steady rain. Like I said, I bought the jacket for a mountaineering expedition and so wanted a helmet compatible hood. At first I thought it was going to be too bulky without a helmet but it cinches down nicely (and I have a small head). The length is great for a harness and the pockets are high enough to not get in the way but comfortable to warm your hands up when simply walking around town. The one thing I would have like to see is an inner mesh pocket large enough to store a water bottle. During my hike in the Adirondacks our water was freezing so I had to stick my 1 liter Nalgene bottle in the jacket and it was flopping around quite a bit. Not a deal breaker though. The length is great - it comes down below the hips, and does not ride up when you lift your arms. There is enough room for a light puffy or a fleece underneath for layer but not too much more. When wearing just a T-shirt it does not feel baggy. I tried on the Gamma MX and it felt bulky, restrictive, and is too short for technical pursuits IMHO. The cuffs are form fitting with stretch to wear some gloves underneath. They feel great but it can be difficult to move them up over a watch. Not a bit deal to me. For reference I am 5'11" 180 lbs with an average build. Overall, I highly recommend this softshell. It is just as at home in the mountains as in the city. A great all around jacket.
My entry into Arc'teryx
This was my first Arc'teryx product and it impressed me so much... I had never heard of Arc'teryx before but when I searched the internet for the best softshell jacket this one came up. So I purchased one in size large. I am 183cm, 82kg and wanted it a little bigger so I can layer up. After 2,5 years it still looks like new. Mostly, I wear it around town but occasionally also when hiking. It is not waterproof but it can withstand a good amount rain before water leaks in. It is not insulated but when active it can be worn down to 5-6 °C with only a base layer underneath. It breaths really well and in direct sunlight it is actually cooler wearing it than not. Since I wear it mostly around town (where I don't need a helmet) the hoody way too big. Maybe Arc'teryx can make an urban environment inspired softshell like the Gamma LT Hoddy?
