Features

  • Kit includes an analog thermometer, slope meter, polycarbonate crystal card, 15x magnifying loupe and Extended Column Test (ECT) cord, all packaged in a compact carrying case
  • Proper use of snow study tools allows the user to gather valuable information on the stability of the snowpack and make informed travel decisions
  • Analog thermometer lets you check the temperature gradient of the snowpack; includes a sling for hanging on ski tip when taking measurements
  • Slope meter calculates the angle of the slope (angle range: 0 to 60°) and, using a compass to determine slope aspect, helps you navigate through potential avalanche terrain
  • Polycarbonate crystal card with metric grid, 2 mm grid and beveled edge; measures 6 x 4 in.
  • 15x magnifying loupe has closed sides for wind protection; pairs with polycarbonate crystal card to let you study snow crystal shape and size to evaluate snow stability
  • 2 m (6.5 ft.) ECT cord has knots every 24 cm (10 in.), and 2 swaged aluminum teeth at the center to cut through snow and crust; handles on each end provide grip while sawing
  • Note that many avalanche courses require students to bring their own snow study tools
  • The more reliable your data, the more reliable your decision-making; this kit was carefully designed in conjunction with North America's most experienced avalanche educators

Good kit

I haven't used it in the field, but the construction is good and the included tools are of decent quality. I'm not sure if the AIARE books or this kit have changed since the other review, but I can fit my blue book inside just fine (it's a little cramped with the thermometer and loupe, but not tough to zip). There aren't really any other options for a snow study kit that you don't piecemeal yourself, but if you have the shovel and probe and just want to start digging pits, this will get you the rest of the way there and packs up nicely.

Has essentials,doesn't fit aiare book

This is a useful basic backcountry snow kit with some essential tools to aid in characterizing snow and your terrain. Both the kit cover and the tools seem to have durable construction. One con, whichi could easily be corrected by the manufacturer is that the kit is too small for a typical aiare or all-weather notebook.

Make your own kit.

I just got my kit that I need for AIARE 2 and I am not impressed by the quality of the little plastic pieces in this kit. The thermometer appears to be off by several degrees, the inclinometer feels very chincey and it has one of those cheap compasses built in. I really don’t understand what was worth a $100 in this kit. If I was to do this again, I’d buy my own components.

Needed for any higher level Avi courses. This small light weight kit is a must if you want to get into the depth of snow science and crystals.
