Never even made it into the bush. Noticed the beam strength die quickly with at home use, went to change the batteries and looks like the ones that came with it burst. Very disappointed. The cost of shipping alone was not worth it.
Got the previous Storm with 500 lumens late last year for my ultra paddle board race. 220km and the torch did its thing perfectly for the night slog in rain and morning fog. But just last week when I took it out of the bag to take it camping, I noticed that the Powertap sensor on the side no longer works. I use it sparingly, usually at its dimmest and only Powertap it when I need it on demand. But that's no longer working. Now I'm forced to use the dimmer mode with the cycle loop from the main top button and not getting much response even after mailing support with the problem I got. I hope warranty is as good as it says.. Barely a year.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Worth noting that we do have a three year warranty on our lighting products. I'd recommend that you file a warranty claim with us here: https://warranty.bdel.com/CreateCase/StepOne and we can look into a solution for you.
I thought I found the ideal lamp. Comfortable, bright, versatile. It took a while to get used to the one touch/swipe/super bright feature, but then I really enjoyed it. I love the functio switch as compared toone switch controlling all functions and dimming. After about 30-45 days of use, with batteries (supplied Duracell alkalines), the light went from my setting to ultra dim. I thought it was the batteries being depleted, but they were only at 50%. The next day, no problems for 10 minutes, then same thing. I did discover that green LED is great for dog walking, and no weird dimming issues. Definitely not happy.
Thank you for taking the time to write a review, we apologize for the issues you are having with your headlamp. There is incomplete information on our packaging as it does not split total burn time out into run time and reserve time. Run time at full power of 375 lumens is approximately 5 hours, with the rest being reserve power where you will have minimal amount of usable light for low intensity activities. You can use our PowerTap, Memory Brightness and dimming features to prolong battery life, check out our headlamp video above on this webpage for more details. We will be updating our packaging for future production to be clearer with this and are sorry for any confusion this may have caused. Please contact Black Diamond Customer Service at bdmo@bdel.com or your local Black Diamond Retailer if you have additional questions.
I have had several head lamps in the past and just picked up this new version of the Storm about a month ago. I am a Single Pitch Instructor and work outdoors in the early morning and late evenings often. I LOVE the features of this lamp such as the color options, flood light and beam light modes, the max power touch mode and the lock function. I thought these features would be gimmicks at fist, but have found them to be extremely useful in the backcountry. My only complaint is unremarkable head band and the weight and bulk of the lamp. Other than that, it's the best all around head lamp on the market. -CW
I bought this headlamp in mid 2019 and when I was on a 3 am tour the dimmer switch decided what amount of light i should have. garbage headlamp. BD if your reading these, stop production!
I'v done some measurements: @6V, Power full here are the current measurements: Spot: 470mA Flood: 189mA Red: 79mA Green/Blue: 94mA Full power (both white leds): 680mA @6V, lowest power: Spot: 5,4mA Flood: 17mA Red: 21mA Green/Blue: 18mA Power reserve activates under 3,1V All the measurements are done with a bench power supply so that the results are not affected by the quality of some batteries. Reading the numbers means that an 800mAh NiMh rechargeable set will drain after 1h at full power. If the quality of the batteries are low then they will have a higher voltage drop for a higher current, resulting in activating the power saving mode. Recomendation is to use the highest quality of batteries (rechargeables) available. If quality is low avoid full power! This is the downside of using high power leds. (All other high power headlight use LiIon rechargeable batteries with high capacity >2000mAh)
I bought this headlamp to increase the light levels when biking and trail running in recreation time through the winter months but primarily for work.I spend a lot of time in remote parts of the country in all weathers. All the good points around good design, construction don't really matter as I find the headlamp utterly useless. I've used it twice with good quality batteries and within 30-40 minutes on full beam it goes dim as the batteries have been drained of power. Its not cold at this time of year so its not that. The lamp just cant stay on full power for long using alkaline batteries. Its a big thumbs down from me and not something I can work around. It just doesnt work to a level I need it to.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It doesn't sound like that battery life is working as it should. I'd recommend that you file a warranty claim with us here: https://warranty.bdel.com/CreateCase/StepOne and we can look into a solution for you.
This headlamp has an amazing price point for all of the features and lumens! It took a sec to figure out how to use all the buttons and feature, but I’d dare say it has a setting to suit whatever purpose I may find. I would recommend and buy again. If you’re hoping for a stealth light system, be sure to apply electricians tape to the blue battery indicator lights on the side.
As with the other reviewer and others on REI's website, the light does not stay on bright. It will decide on its own to go completely dim, leaving you with a light that doesn't shine more than a foot in front of you if that. I went through 2 sets of batteries (one set came with it, one set I had bought recently) and both times it did this. The features of this light are great. The 2 button design is great. The memory feature of the last setting is a great feature too. Brightness is amazing and all lamps are just right. Fix this issue and this light would be my go to.
Thanks for your review. There is inadequate information on our packaging as it does not split total burn time out into run time and reserve time. So bright. Definitely sufficient for most tasks. The various settins are pretty simple, not overly complicated. Red light with multiple settings is great. The battery compartment hinged door with locking latch is beefy and is a big set up. Keep in mind, the torch is about twice as thick with the extra battery, and its heavy, so its pretty noticeable on your head and has a top heaviness to it. I think a wider, more ergonomic design could make for an even better version in the future. But for now, really stoked on the opportunities this amount of brightness opens up.
