This pack was purchased for a multi-day trip to the Wind River Range. I upgraded from a REI pack that was wearing out. The pack worked really well. There are lots of adjustments and it took a little bit to get it adjusted just right for me. The pack is well built and designed. I love the various pockets that I can stuff things into. Having the top come off and be used as a small day pack was an added bonus that I didn’t think I would use but turned out to be very handy for some day hikes from our camp. The rain fly is also a nice bonus and has come in handy a few times. I’ve now used this on 3 trips and would recommend it.
We have a son going to Philmont for the first time with his boyscout troop. We needed a 70 liter bag with a camelback and a rain fly for the pack. We originally bought a different brand because of supply issues and then found out that we would need to spend another 100 dollars to get the other pieces that already come with the osprey. That pack also had rough fabric on the shoulder straps that would have been painful over a 70 mile trek. We joined rei and are buying the bulk of what we need from this store because of their 1 year return policy. My son is already doing practice hikes so if anything fails we know that rei will stand behind their products and at the prices for the different equipment that was a big selling point for us. So far, we expect this pack to make several more trips to Philmont and we are very happy with the product. I would buy this again.
I have done a lot of miles with this pack. I had a Baltero 75 that I sold and bought this in '22 and find the two of them very equivalent feature-wise, but this pack is much more comfortable to carry for me. I am 5'10", about 200lb, and have the small size pack which fits perfectly. I had the large Baltero and it slid off my hips no matter how tight I pulled the hip strap. I wish this pack had an alternative lid that was just a lid and no straps or extra zippers. I have used the lid as a daypack once in probable 150 miles or more of travel. I looked at the Aether pro and liked this suspension better, its really comfortable loaded with over 50 pounds (I did Rainier Emmons route with the pack and carried rope, tent, food, boots and all my other gear). I think Osprey needs the Pro setup with this suspension and it would be a pound and a half lighter. All in all very pleased with this pack, and its super comfy when all packed up. My cell phone (galaxy S23plus fits in the hip pocket which is awesome as well!
I took this pack on a 12 day 75 mile trek at Philmont Scout Ranch and it worked amazing. It holds items very well and the included pack cover kept my bag dry though out the daily rain storms. The day pack was amazing for our 12 mile hike of baldy. The only thing is that I recommend is that you buy a seperat rain cover as the day pack doesn’t come with a second one.
I seldom write reviews and see far too many where the person reviewing has not used the product yet. I have owned 8 different Osprey packs and have really liked most of them. I have been backpacking for 60 years and have had all styles and brands of packs. The only Osprey pack I didn't like was the Exos 58, but it was because I tend to carry heavier loads and the pack did not fit ""me"" well. Not really a fault of the pack. I recently purchased an Aether 70 plus and am really impressed with it. My previous favorite was the Atmos 65, but the Aether is better in my opinion. The Aether has a lot of adjustability and carries heavier loads well. I been on two trips recently with weights of 30 and 40 lbs. I thought the pack supported those weights really well. I have to call bs on people who claim that whatever pack they were using carried heavy weights like a dream. 30 and 40 pound packs are heavy and you will feel it, but I feel like the Aether is the best i've used for heavier loads. I'm not and ultra light backpacker and don't do 20 plus miles a day so the fact that the Aether is a bit heavy doesn't bother me. I like to be comfortable and warm when backpacking so I bring some extra items, but I try to go as light as I can. If you are in the market for this type of pack I highly recommend the Aether 70 plus.
I have been backing for some time now and was looking to upgrade my pack, maybe loose a few ounces. We don't go ultra light so I still need to pack 45-50 lb on average. The good: The quality and design over all is good. I like the removable lid and the two sided water storage. The bad: I found that the pack has issues around the shoulder strap design. The upper part is a nice gel but there's a seam and bump there that rides on you shoulder which I found uncomfortable. The shoulder strap adjustment is way to high on me, sitting up above my arm pit. I'm not sure why but probably because the way that they incorporated the adjustable shoulder pads, but this makes it difficult to loosen. I also found that the shoulder straps bothered me when adjusted appropriately. Just seemed to put to much pressure on my chest in order to get it loaded correctly. I suspect the angle of the load lifters is not right for me. There's a lot of adjustment in the shoulder straps and I was at the end of that adjustment range. The pack was correctly fitted (my torso is only 18"). While the water storage on both sides is nice I found it a bit awkward when returning the nalgene bottle to it. I didn't struggle with this at first but when I was tired or exerting myself I did struggle with getting the bottle back.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The stock photo does the color no justice. Absolutely beautiful green in person. High quality all around. Lots of features. Very comfortable to wear, the extendable hip belt is a game changer for me. My last back had very little cushion and didn’t come forward far enough for the hips, and this is the opposite. Plenty of adjustment length to fit just about everyone. Very simple to adjust the pack fit to make it work for your body. Plenty of zippers and pockets to keep various things organized Have only taken a short hike with this one so far, but with a 40 pound load it felt great. My last pack had the AG system and it was great, but this feels even better. Still able to ventilate the back area. Looking forward to my trips this year, especially now that I have this.
I recently went on my first backpacking trip. I bought the Aether 70 plus for heavy load capabilities. My pack weighed roughly 60lbs without water. I have to say this bag never gave me any problems. I do wish the water bottle pockets were a bit more stretchy at the top so I could Store my water vertically. Very tough if not impossible with a densely packed bag. Not super important because it’s designed to hold it closer to horizontal and that feature worked well. With the exception that I almost lost my nalgene of the side of a mountain. Fit my Nalgene bottles with ease in even the fullest packed bag. I knew I wanted to carry heavy weight (60++) and this bag did well. I felt it carried well if I use it again i would adjust the adjustable back panel (back yolk?) to make the pack ride higher. This does fit a large bear can easily with all other gear. It fits sideways at the very top with some struggle or bery easily in the main compartment. Being able to open the pack all the way to get to the bearcan or other items was pretty awesome. I only went on a three day trip but I used the trip to gauge how it would handle much longer trips and I didn’t see any reason why you couldn’t be out there for a solid month without needing to resupply. Found the hiking pole straps to not be that awesome. Every time you set the pack down the poles get dislodged. Could be improved. I ended up just strapping my poles to the bottom of the pack where people usually strap their sleeping pad. I had a 2L camel back but I never filled it so can’t comment on that other than it looks like it would handle much larger water packs if you didn’t mind the weight. Overall other than the side stretchy pockets and the pole loops theres not much this back leaves to be desired. The rainfly could be a touch larger. I found with a fully packed bag the rainfly was very snug and in a downpour I could see some issues at the top. But i was able to get the pack almost fully covered in a completely full to the brim pack. Day pack is a bit overrated. I often wished it was just a pocket and not full of heavy duty straps. That would make the space more usable. My trip didnt need any day pack so maybe this is a cool feature but i just didnt find the need and often wished i could pack more stuff into that when not being used. Overall id rate the bag about 9/10. No major signs of wear but the bag is really heavy at 5.5 lbs but if yours packing weight this thing will carry it no problem.
I purchased the 85L version in November of 2020 Have used it on 4 weekend outing. Carried it on a 5 mile, 10, and 16 mile day hike. Average weight with all water and food and gear was 50 lbs. It didn't slow me down. I out paced 3 other adults in my group while helping 8 teenage boys prepare for Philmont. I love my pack. I'm still learning the intricacies of backpacking and don't own most of what's required. I look forward to many more weekends out away from civilization
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Osprey is awesome. They stand behind their warranty. I had an Aether 70 that had zipper and buckle issues, with some major wear on the straps securing the hip belt. I sent it in; they looked at it, and declared it not worthy of repairing. They sent me an updated model of the backpack I love and recycled parts from my old backpack. What an awesome company!!!
