I contribute my success of submitting Mount Kilimanjaro to this pack. It is extremely comfortable and when I was in the military I could really use this.
This is my 1st backpack purchase in about 15 years, so take my words with a grain of salt. I hiked/backpacked before with a cheep plastic framed backpack it was ok, this so far has been very comfortable. I have been testing it out on my little 5mi to 9mi day hikes, but due have a 4 day tip in april. It has not failed in anyway & these day hikes the pack is packed for 4 days worth weighing in at 35lb.
This pack has every feature one would want in a pack except for a MAJOR design flaw. It has 2 friction points on the back adjustment system which rub on my back and leave me with two red chaffing marks and bruises after every long hike with heavier loads (40-45lbs). I originally bought this for mountaineering and it was perfect because I was wearing so many layers due to cold weather. Now that I'm using it in warm weather without the extra layers on my upper body, I have found that the 2 adjustment strap connection points rub on my back and have removed the skin and caused painful bruising. I have adjusted the pack a number of times to see if it would help but have found that nothing works. I own numerous packs for every possible situation and although I love the features of this pack it is simply too painful to use in warmer weather when I am not wearing extra layers to provide some protection for my back. I hate to say it because I love the features but coming from someone that wears a pack at least 3 out of 7 days every week, I would NOT recommend this pack. There are many other brands with different designs that do not have this issue.
My SO was in need of a new pack- he's 6'7 and had been using his sister's. He also has a poorly healed broken collarbone so comfort and weight distribution for someone of his height was super important. We got him sized in a store and compared this pack to the Deuter Aircontact and the Gregory Baltoro. This was by far the lightest and most comfortable pack he tried on- on both shoulder straps, adjustability, and hip belt. Nice that they now include the raincover- when I got my Ariel a few years ago, they didn't include those. I'll update this review after a few months and see how things work out re: his shoulder.
Traded in my prior Deuter for a new Aether recently, and this time got properly fitted by the expert help at REI. In the store I felt a difference right away. Then I hit the trail (AT section) with a full load and my feelings were confirmed. The comfort made a difference! The backpack is nicely designed, with pockets where you expect. A large enough main cabin, top and bottom auxilliary storage, an outside pouch at the back and stretchy side pocket for that needed water-bottle or grab-on-the-go item. Plus hip pockets for keys etc. the pack is easily customizable and when properly fitted is an easy burden to carry.
Solid backpacking pack. I purchased mine circa 2008, I think it is an Aether 70. I went through multiple frame and nonframe packs since the 70s, and this is by far the must comfortable I have ever owned. I needed to accommodate a rented bear barrel, so went with a 70 liter. Solo trips have included the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne (5 days), Denali National Park (5 days), and the John Muir Trail (18 days). I have packed up to 11 days provisions. It may not be for ultralight packers, but I have no intention of replacing it. Still planning new trips.
Great bag!! I’ve had a Kelty Redwing 90L for 15 years. It was a good bag but the materials that were available at the time still made the bag heavy even when empty and of course with 90 L you can pack everything but the kitchen sink. With the new materials, technology and the Osprey brand-name I decided to go in on this bag. The bag is extremely comfortable fully adjustable and distributes weight evenly and overall feels great! The fact that it’s a 65L forces me to take only the essentials plus a little extra without overweighing the bag and making the trip uncomfortable. I expect I’ll have this bag for many years to come and I appreciate the quality behind it.
Extraordinarily comfortable, but fairly heavy for a pack. However, that weight doesn't make me care so much when the pack is as pleasant as it is to wear. Padding is great, adjustability is decently easy with many points of adjustment, and the straight jacket plus front opening have worked great for me. My *only* complaint (other than my minor gripe about the weight) is that I wish the opening for the sleeping bag compartment was a touch bigger. I use a large synthetic sleeping bag, and it just *barely* can't get in via that pocket. I can toss it through the front pocket and get it all the way to the bottom, however, so at least it can still come with me.
Bought this pack a few weeks ago to replace my old Atmos, have used it for several 3-4 day trips in the Adirondacks already. To really appreciate the pack you have to load it up with 30+ pounds, the back panel will feel stiff and uncomfortable otherwise. But it carries weight extremely well, I was in the 40-50lb range and had no problem hiking all day. It also moves well with your body which is excellent when you have to scramble. The hip belt and shoulder straps in particular are very comfortable and easy to adjust. The difference from the old Aether AG version to this one are included rain cover at the cost of the day pack and the stow-on-the-go trekking pole attachments. To be honest the only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because I'm not thrilled that Osprey would remove a feature that was so handy (according to Osprey it will be on a higher priced Aether Plus backpack...) and I miss the external pockets on the Atmos. But as far as carrying capacity, comfort, and ease of use go, this is a real winner.
This bag is my first ever hiking pack of this size. After getting setup by REI staff i headed out a week later for a 2 night trip. Full wet weight of 35.7lbs. (I was carrying 4 liters of water.) Bag was completely comfortable and had just enough room for all my stuff and as a first timer probably a few extra things i didn't need. Love the on the fly adjustments, made my first overnight hike easier. I figured out how to adjust for inclines and how to shift weight off hips onto shoulders and vis versa for a short break while hiking. Pack sat well on my body and never felt out of balance other than just not having trail legs yet. Had a little light rain right when we got to camp first night, but not enough to say i tested pack for rain. Pack does come with rain cover, but again didn't have need to test.
