Good flavor, good energy boost

Background: I have been hiking/backpacking since the mid 1970s. I have settled on foods and timing of eating that work well for me for a variety of levels of exertion and different settings (elevation, weather). I use a variety of snacks while hiking, and when I need a quick boost - such as well into a long uphill slog, particularly at high elevation - I use products similar to the GU Energy Chews. I have found them to be very useful for this purpose. For a test run of the GU Energy Chews, which I had never used before, I did a day hike of about 8 miles and about 2,000 ft of vertical gain. It was a warm and humid day, too warm for my taste. Weather like that saps my energy. I broke out the GU chews near the end of the uphill portion of the hike, and they provided a much needed energy boost. Mission accomplished. The chews I had were Orange flavored. I found the flavor to be good, though I might prefer a bit brighter orange. Just my personal preference. I did note some other subtle flavor profiles behind the orange. I have found this to be true of other similar products as well, likely due to some of the ingredients. Nothing bad, just there. The texture was of a soft chew - easy to chew and swallow. I found no grittiness or uneven texture to them. In this regard they are quite good. The bottom line is that I found them to be good, and serve their intended purpose well. Unfortunately, on the downhill part of the hike I took a hard fall and injured my knee, which prevented me from doing other hikes during the allotted product review time. If the GU Energy Chews had arrived just one week earlier I could have used them on a much bigger day hike (13.5 miles, 3,800 ft of vertical rise). They would have come in handy that day.

Gave me a boost but I prefer more natural ingredie

I tried the Watermelon Energy Chews on several hikes, while helping friends gather rocks from their property to build a path, and while volunteering at our local botanical garden. The chews did give me a boost, which was nice. The package says that they are naturally flavored but the ingredient list has too many unfamiliar ingredients. I prefer products with more natural ingredients. They did taste faintly of watermelon, but only in the way that a piece of candy would. They were easy to eat and stayed fresh on a hike even once I had opened them. I like it that they are low in sodium although I would have liked some protein.

I've been a skeptic my whole life...

...So when REI asked me to test these, I knew I had to give them a fair shakedown, a real geartest. I'd been confined to quarters since a back injury a year ago, this is a perfect excuse to get back on the trail! Water, check! Trail, check! Eat a pack before I head out, check! And the text with "L" kinda says it all. These things WORK; as advertised, and probably better. They're tasty, which is a rarity in 'performance food' and man oh man you basically feel completely refreshed about a minute after you eat them. I took these for a mile and a half hike with a 1000 ft elevation gain, the one I do for most of my gear testing. This time, there was a marked difference in how my body felt compared to previous experiences, and the change in performance was incredible. I wasn't expecting a hike of this intensity to feel this easy after a year of not being able to- and the only difference is the chews. They're delightfully soft and manage to not stick in your teeth, with a real punch of tangy, sweet flavor. The energy boost behind the chews is significant, and, combined with a regular intake of water, makes a serious positive impact on the trail. Based on this experience, I'm not going on the trail without them ever again. Like the ten essentials, they're now a necessary part of kit, and they just go with me.

Very Chewy Chews

I honestly can't say if I got any more of an energy burst from munching on these chews than I would have gotten from eating a small square of chocolate. I can say the chocolate would be tastier. I actually like gummy candy but the texture of these was a a bit too mushy for me and I never really got any specific flavor taste. On the plus side, the packets are easy to open (important when you are on the move), made well so they don't melt into a gelatinous mass while you are on the go, have just the right amount of calories so you are not chewing more than you are burning, are GF and give a 20mg blast of caffeine. (PS pics of my daughter who is more photogenic than me!)

Great for a Boost of Energy !!!

I used these chews for a camping and hiking trip. The strawberry flavor is good! From setting up camp, which can be a workout in the wind, to hiking, these chews come in handy. Got a boost of energy when I used them. They do taste great, no after taste and a bit sweet. While hiking up a steep, rough terrain they certainly gave me the extra push I needed. Would highly recommend!

Easy to eat while riding.

The blueberry pomegranate chews were tested on different bike rides and used as mid-ride refuelings. I was a bit skeptical as I'm not a fan of other chews that I had tried. I was pleasantly surprised with the taste as the flavor was subtle and not overpowering. The chews were easy to eat with no digestive issues afterwards. The package fits nicely into my top tube bag to eat on the go, and also fits cycling jersey pockets. The package opens easily but once opened expect to consume all chews as the package doesn't close. My go-to in-ride nutrition is fig bars and my water is electrolyte fortified. I would include these on longer rides for variety.

Great to keep you going

So my job is a fire inspector in which I oversee construction sites and do most of my field work in the mornings, but sometimes I have most of the day there. I thought this product would be great to test and see how it works while I am out and need some extra energy to get me through until I can eat lunch. This is a great product with the taste being pretty good and no real after taste. It worked great for me as far as keeping me satisfied until I went for lunch. I will definitely use these for hiking and days that I will be out longer which I will need a little bit extra energy. I thought this was a great test of the product and love doing this.

Good for a short Hike

First of all I received this free product in exchange for my honest review. The product that I am reviewing is the Energy Chews orange flavor. This package contained 16 gummies and I was required to take 8 each of these gummies 5 minute before starting my hike and the second 8 each to be taken 45 minutes after the first chews. This would allow me to walk an estimated 45 minutes before I would have to open the second package. The chews had a soft texture that didn't change in the heat of the day making it easy to handle while hiking. When i started to chews them I noticed that it didn't stick to my natural and capped teeth which was nice. The orange flavor did not last long in a moist mouth but if my mouth was dry the flavor stayed around for about 1.5 hours or after I took a drink of water. These chews were also easy to chew and dissolve in my mouth which is great. this would allow this product to enter my blood stream sooner through the blood vessels in my mouth. The one thing I did notice was the stamina in my arms were improved and felt very comfortable but it only lasted for about 1.5 hours after I took the second 8. My hike was 10 miles long that lasted over 3.5 hours and I maintained a step rate of 3 mph. I did two walks which allowed to use one package per walk. Both walks were in the rolling hills of southern Michigan. The first was was 10 mile in a state park and the second walk was a loop of 10 miles through the Michigan country side. I felt this product wasn't to bad and tasted pretty good. I felt it was doing what is was supposed to do, at least for about 1.5 hours into a 3.5 hour walk. After that I had to drink more water to continue to feel refreshed. There is one issue that effects hikes that deal with carrying as light a load as possible. Each package weighs 2.12 oz. and if you wanted to make sure your electrolytes were maintained on a long hike you would have to carry multiple packages which would add to the weight they are carrying. Also with carrying so many packages they would have to hold onto the depleted packages if they are to follow the trace left behind except your foot print. Bottom line is that this product isn't to bad for those who enjoy short hikes and weren't concerned about the extra weight of the packages. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because of how long it lasted per package and if hiking long distances additional package would have to be carried which would add weight to an already heavy pack.

Great Taste & Boost of Energy

Because we have had an exceptionally cool & wet NW spring, my hiking buddies have not engaged in “hikes” as we have normally done during the month of May, however, living in a rural area, I have access to the “Rails to Trails” and walk as part of my regular routine. I was delighted at the taste and felt effects within 15 minutes on the four extended walks I took in 40-60 degree weather. What I noticed most was the light feeling in my gait and the warm feeling of my feet (as if they were cushioned in sheepskin). I wore the same sock & hiking boot combination for all of my "hikes" which were 4-7 miles although mostly flat. I felt an even "light" feeling and pehaps more awareness of the visual because there was no "tired" feeling. My test participation was an enjoyable one.

Great taste plus convenient size!

Just finished a 23 mile, 3800ft elevation mtb bike ride. I have to say these GU every chews exceeded my expectations. The added caffeine helped with having energy and with my climbs! The instructions have you take all 8 small chews (1 bag) before your activity and then take another 8 chews (1bag), during your activity but I spaced it out and took 2-3 whenever I took a quick break. These chews taste great and the texture is not too hard or soft. If you don't like the strong taste of energy gels, I would definitely add these to your snack pile. It's also small and easy to store than the CLIF BLOKS.
