- A very rough rule of thumb is that if packed efficiently, the Ursack Major 30-liter bear sack can hold about 14 days worth of food for 1 person
- Made from "bulletproof" fabric, it's lightweight, collapsible and bear-resistant
- Comes with an integrated 6 ft., 2500 lb. high-tensile strength cords
- Ursack highly recommends using an OPSak odor barrier bag or an aluminum liner (both not included) with the bag
- This updated version features a tighter weave that's more than double the tear-strength of previous models
- Passed the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) test and was placed on its bear-resistant products list on July 31, 2014
- The IGBC list is relied on by many wilderness agencies but not all; wilderness restrictions may still apply depending on where you travel—please check first

A scam… i’m depending on having food on my trip for two weeks in Alaska and I need something light weight.. I just stored some food in my garage in the bag overnight in a squirrel a fifth size hole in it overnight.. no way would it protect from a bear a waste of money
Works perfectly, closes tightly and securely
I used this Ursack on two trips, and I'm confused by the comments about the Ursack not closing tightly enough to keep small critters out of your food. If you close the bag according to the instructions (I use two double-overhand knots), there is no way anything could get into the sack. When there's an appropriate tree available I hang the Ursack like a traditional bear bag, but when not, I simply tied it to a tree according to the instructions, using a figure-8 knot. The only downside to the Ursack is that the sack itself essentially doubles in weight when it gets wet, but it does a great job of keeping your food secure.
Bear will still ruin your food
We were camping where there were no tall trees to tie this up into so we tied it to a log. The bag worked as advertised, the knots held it to the log and kept it closed, AND the bear was able to bite through all over the bag, as the description says, they can bite throughbut not tear it. However, the product fails to point out to you what will happen should all of your food, liquid and powdered, be punctured by bear teeth. Half our food was ruined since it was all ripped open and smushed together while the bear wrestled the bag! I am so disappointing because I thought this would be so much more convenient than the hard bear canisters. I suppose it would be still be good if you can hang it.
Preferred over a bear canister when allowed
Check carefully as each wilderness / site has its own rules on whether it will accept these; rules change as bears catch on to new products! Way lighter and more packable than a bear canister. As other reviewers note, it's not rodent-proof nor scent-proof. We just threw it upside-down in a stuff sack and made sure we had everything in plastic bags to reduce odor. Beats having to find a branch 10' away from the trunk of a tree in coniferous forest. 2 nights in bear country; totally undisturbed.
Ideal size for 7 days of food.
Used this on a long hike in CO, where I needed to carry 7d of food at a time. It worked perfectly for that. Consider that when its full, its going to take up a lot of space in your pack (half of it) unless you are transferring only at night time. I found this bag worked very well strapped to the top of my backpack The material is quite shiny, so the straps needs to be well done or it slips off, and took a bit of fettling to get that right. But for that reason, it cleans easy too. I can't rate it for 'bearproofness'. Fortunately I never had a night visit from a bear (when using this bag!). My understanding is its resistant and deterrent, not completely proof. There are some pictures online of clawed failed bear bags. If in doubt, use a canister.
Difficult to determine if this sack is worth it
I purchased this as were backpacking in MT in bear country above timberline and it was the only reasonable food protection I could come up with. We never had a bear encounter so I cannot say if it would have worked. Like others said however I was not impressed with the drawstring top.....it is not possible to close it all the way down. The best you'll achieve is leaving a hole about 2-3" in diameter. A rodent could easily get into the sack, and I wondered if a bear could start to work their paw into that hole and eventually get to the food. I am surprised that this isn't manufactured to address this issue. This sack was pretty expensive for what it is. I suppose if we'd had a bear try to get in and couldn't I would have been more impressed, but for now I feel like I overpaid for what I received.
Did it really work?
Works great. That is no bears or animals seemed to touch it on the 4 or 5 nights I used it (I carried it for 500 miles). I used it in areas with fairly low bear activity (bears but no problems). It works great when what you want is peace of mind even if it is unfounded. I hung this bag whenever I could (not the intended use) and prevented (due to a good bear hang) a bear that came to camp from retrieving it (other campers lost their food). I carried the Ursack for the nights when I was above tree line or the trees were too small. One night I tied it to a sign post at12,500' and it worked great! ;) See you tube for a quick method of tying and untying to a tree. I did meet a hiker with the same ursack that had a bear come into camp-it did manage to damage the bag and remove some food. But the bag was mostly intact. Overall, it is too heavy to carry if you know how to truly set up a proper bear hang. Though, it is a much lighter option than a canister. If you want the best peace of mind carry a canister. If you want the lightest pack weight-learn how to hang your food well.
Great on the trails!
Bag seemed to work well. No animals came by while using! Used smell-proof ziplocks inside Ursack. Still had to bring and use with my own para lite cord to hang so just be sure to bring that along too. Like the larger size. Can always fold down in your bag if you don't need to use entire thing.
Just ok. No Velcro at the top
This sack did work affectively and was great for a three family backpacking session. We had two other smaller sacks but this held the most and came in the most useful. Having said that the other two sacks that were bought in the past had a Velcro top to them which provided much better protection from animals getting in that way. This sack only allows us to tie the top I still provided a hole for animals.
Bear proof
I have used ursacks for 10+ yrs and they are still in use. Best product and finally getting approval in some National Parks! I needed an additional bag for an extended backpacking trip with a friend and a dog and this bag is plenty large enough without a lot of additional weight. The only negative is they replace the hilarious comic strip instructions with a QR code. Got reception in the backcountry???
