Instruction Clarification
I also thought this quick link was going to be impossible to install because of the design, but the connection only took about 30 seconds once I realized the instructions don't clearly describe the most important part of installation. The instructions say to "loosen" the chain at step 5, but I think they mean slightly "bend" or "flex" the link (laterally as other have mentioned) to bring pins closer together so that 2nd pin can be set into the hole.
Works Great!
Can't imagine what the other reviewers who had a hard time with this were doing, it literally snaps right in. Takes a little fiddling but following the instructions and using some common sense, it took me less than 5 minutes. I would definitely recommend wearing gloves if you can, chains can get plenty grungy.
Even the bike mechanics cant connect this
These come slightly bent making it impossible to link these pieces on the chain. After tearing up my thumbs and possibly damaging my chain, I tossed in the towel and brought it into my bike shop. I watched 4 other grown men struggle with this quick link and the result was a bent quicklink that I expect to break in the near future. Save yourself the trouble and get a different chain that fits your drivetrain. I'm sure these might have a manufacturer defect. You can tell because there is a concave bend to it with the pins pointing outward. If not, then they expect you to have iron thumbs and bend metal.
No Tool Required!
Once you figure out that you bend the chain laterally to get these on, it’s super easy to set and you don’t need a master link tool.
Good to keep in the tool kit
Quick link can get you out of the trail in a broken/twisted chain event
Could not get closed
To use these you slip one end over a pin, then push the open part so that pin slides to the other end. At that point you're supposed to 'Loosen the chain and insert the pin securely into the hole' according to part 5 of the 6 part instructions. Good luck forcing the second pin in, as that is essentially what you are expected to do. I could find just one video online of someone actually demonstrating this 'quick' link and it took him 25 minutes (!) of messing around with the chain, bending it this way and that, to finally jam the link into the second pin. He also appeared to be a mechanic in a bike shop. This is the link including with Shimano's SM-UG51 chain, which is how I came across it. If you buy this chain be sure to buy a real quick-link link separately.
Meh
Difficult to get on, even more difficult to remove, but it definitely holds up when installed correctly. It's a one time use. There are better quick links out there.
Just a master link
Stupid me, I thought I was getting a deal on a chain, so I bought two. The picture shows a chain, but be aware this is just one master link.
Useles
Impossible to get these links closed They Do not work !!!
