Not the Attack of yesteryear
I have owned and used this style for a long time. After spending the past decade raising my kids I have been wearing my Attack shorts from around 2009 on and off a couple times a month for a decade. I decided I needed new shorts so I bought these on sale. This new product is ridiculously inferior it’s crazy. The chamois is like a giant uniform diaper. They are hugely uncomfortable and I will now need to look elsewhere. I love(d) my originals but seriously don’t buy these.
Pearl Izumi Shorts - Not Like They Used to Be
Pearl Izumi have drastically changed their sizing and proportions. I have worn PI shorts for decades, always wearing the same size, and so this season I purchased another pair of the same Attack shorts that I have bought twice before. The first pair was size Large and the leg openings were only 2/3 the size of previous! I then tried a size XL and the legs fit, but the rest was truly XL, falling off! And no, my body is the same as it has been for a long time. Based on this I checked PI shorts on display at another shop and those were also the same - very oddly proportioned. Time to find a different brand.
not what they used to be
The last Pearl Izumi cycling shorts I bought have at least 4,000 miles on them. I machine wash them, dry them in the dryer, and otherwise generally don’t take superb care of them. They are still unbelievably comfortable. I bought the Attack shorts for occasional use with an indoor bike in another city, thinking they would be similarly great… they are not. The overall feel is just cheap and rigid. The chamois is not contoured, and feels sort of like sitting on a piece of styrofoam. If these were half the cost, I’d understand, but they are priced like a decently upper-mid-level product. Going to try something else next.
A+
These are fantastic. So far only worn in moderate temps <70F but they are the right level of tight on the legs without cutting off circulation. They are extremely comfortable; I'd like to find some that don't have the chamois so I can wear them around the house & in the gym. I liked so much I bought 2 more pair, and will buy more in the future. They don't ride up the leg, or sag down in the waistband. All that said, a pocket on the side would be a nice addition, just one side. I have some REI liners that have this pocket and it is fantastic for putting keys/phone in it while I am preparing for the ride. Wouldn't be hard to add here.
Size and quality have changed
I purchased that same brand, version, and size 3 years ago. That product was excellent. This iteration is disappointing. The fabric is thinner, the padding more limited; and most concerning is that the sizing is substantially changed. I'm 5'9", 170 lbs, with a 34" waist. This product purchased 3 years ago as a size 'large' was a bit generous. This time it is very tight, despite the fact that my weight and body fat distribution has not changed. Since it is made in China, one can only guess that it is now sized to the Chinese market. Caveat emptor.
Great Shorts but Run Small!
I have a relatively small frame (5'-7", 135lbs, Waist ~28") and I normally purchase Small Size shorts. I ordered both small and medium shorts because these were a new purchase for me. Turns out my hunch was correct - the smalls were too small. The waist was tight - but the thigh area was REALLY tight. The mediums fit much better so I kept those and returned the smalls. Other that the size issue - they perform great. Ive ridden about 300 miles in the shorts since purchase - and once they properly broken in they are very comfortable. (The padding is a bit more rigid than I expected out of the box - but after riding and washing a coupe times - no problems.) I plan on buying several more pairs shortly!
Worth the higher cost (they run small though)
This is my second pair. I'll update if there are quality issues as others suggest. These are much more comfortable than my cheaper Bellwether shorts, which leave lines in my skin at the seams. My waist is 33" so I ordered the medium. They were way too small. I'm 5'8" 160 lbs - a pretty average build, recreational cyclist, carrying about 10 lbs more than would be ideal. I returned them for the size large and that fits well - skin tight, but not uncomfortably so. Wish I had noted what size my first pair were before cutting out the tags!
New padding design is a shortfall
I've owned PEARL iZUMi shorts before, but the padding is different in these latest models. The edge of the neoprene layer is not finished or covered, so during my initial 3 hour ride, the neoprene gripped/chaffed my skin severely (talking raw skin/scabs). I like the fit/finish, but had to return because the issue with the unfinished edge. I checked another pair in the store when I returned my pair, and it had the same exposed edge (so not a unique assembly problem).
Review of PEARL iZUMi Men's Attack Bike Shorts
I am assuming that the padding in these PEARL iZUMi are a new introduction. It seems that one size of padding was used in all sizes of shorts. It appeared that the padding would be ideal for the largest size shorts. I ordered a small size based on my history with other PEARL iZUMi shorts of the same size. The shorts arrived with oversized padding which may have made the sizing run smaller than previous shorts. I am aware that changes in production which seem to be a great improvement are often found to be less than expected and will be dropped or modified in latter products. I am still a fan of PEARL iZUMi and will most likely remain a customer.
Not what they used to be
Got my shorts and was disappointed in the quality of the materials and the construction. They have definitely been cost reduced to the minimum. Thinner lycra, less panels and lower quality chamois material. Not anywhere as good as the previous generation. Planning to return these as soon as possible.
