great bag! I love all the features of that bag. most important it is carry on to the plane.
I used this pack for an 880km Camino de Santiago walk across Spain, and I must say it was AWESOME! Look like new after 34 days of use on the Camino. Many features that just make it a really great pack. The elastic side pocket are great, as they really hold things in place. the double zipper make it easy to get to the bottom of the pack without having to open the pack all the way up. The only gripe I have was that the rain cover is a bit flimsy and ripped on me, but other than that it performed amazingly well specially as I got it while it was on sale and for the price I would say it was the best backpack I have ever owned.
Bought five of these for a family trip. Great design and perfect for carry-on luggage for most aircraft. Wish they were better quality. Two of our five tore apart along the zipper within a week of our trip (not overloaded). Noticed this problem in other reviews and thought I'd warn people. Hard to know how to rate it, because it's an ideal size and good design, just poor quality. Figured we'd swap them out for a new ones when we returned, but our local store said we had to trade it in and get new ones. The trade in was the original price and the new ones had been marked up, but they wouldn't do an exchange, so now I'm on the hunt for a new backpack.
Such a great versatile pack. It was my go to climbing bag for several years, and I've used it for everything from day hikes, overnights in the backcountry, to traveling. Super comfortable for long days and it does it good job of distributing heavy loads into your hips. 3+ years later and I'm still reaching for this bag anytime I need something in the 40L range. Its been through a lot of use and the only thing thats failed slightly is the mesh on the sides, but thats from the bag scraping against rocks with a nalgene or a guidebook in the pocket, and not unexpected. The Trail 40 looks great, feels super comfortable, and is an excellent choice for a wide range of ventures
I was just recommending this backpack to my girlfriend preparing for our trip to Europe this summer, and I figured it could use another good review. I’ve had this pack for about 2 years, and it’s still going strong. For context, I was going through a new backpack every year before this one, as I travel for work at least a couple times a week. Sometimes I fly 4 times in a week, and I’m dragging all of my work and personal life with me in this bag. Most of my other bags, even camping and trail packs, wear out within a year- the zipper breaks, the lining tears, the netting gets caught on something and rips. But for whatever reason, this one looks just like it did when I bought it 2 years ago.
I'm somewhat a beginner to UL backpacking, but I've loved this pack so far. It seems really durable and I appreciate the simplicity of it. Nothing against other packs, but many of them have way too much going on (in my opinion). It isn't the largest pack for traditional backpacking, but with smaller/lighter gear I've been able to fit everything I need easily. I usually put my tent, sleeping bag, clothes, and food bag in the main pocket. Even though it's simple there are plenty of large enough pockets to fit all of my smaller things (sleeping pad, toiletries, electronics). I also really like the front mesh pocket. You can fit a ton of stuff in there. I put my water bladder, down jacket and trowel in it. I've used it mostly for 1 nighters but it would work for 2 or 3 nights just as well. I'm no seasoned vet going hundreds of miles, but this pack has been awesome so far for my needs. Definitely worth the relatively low price!
I was looking for a "midrange" pack for either day trips where I end up carrying a bunch of stuff or for 2-3 day backpacking trip. I really liked most of the features of the Trail 40: full length zipper (vs. top load/flap), mesh back and water bottle pockets, slide chest strap, internal pockets, etc. But after a day long hike with it loaded up, I ended up returning the pack due to the hip belt length/coverage - I am a men's 34 waist and the padded part of the hip belt didnt quite come around enough and when I cinched the web belt, the weight became uncomfortable after a few miles. If hip belt not a big factor for you - great pack, but it was a deal breaker for me
I bought this pack a few months ago and its seen a good amount of use in this time. I needed a big enough backpack to lug a weeks worth of work uniform to and from work on my hardtail mountain bike. The commute averaging around 15 miles of trail, 30 if I want to party. I find it easy to organize this pack due to the many pockets and compartments. I'm about to board a plane with 'er and its compact enough to be brought on as carry on, stoked for that It's incredibly stable on my person and is made of durable material. The zippers are sturdy enough but you'll really want to be conscious not to over stress them from overpacking. All in all I really enjoy this pack, and if you need a 40L this is a great option.
I had my heart set on a Gossamer Gear Gorilla 40 last year but when I was in REI one day I decided to check out if they offered anything comparable and I found this beauty. I use it for both backpacking and general travel and it's worked out great every time. I love how the zipper goes all the way around because it makes it easy to pack and when I'm trying to find something I just unzip the whole thing and don't have to dig around and mess up my organization. The side pockets are also a huge plus - they're deep and nothing ever falls out compared to my Osprey 50L+ pack. Last but not least - aesthetically it's just a beautiful pack - I got the yellow/gold version and have gotten lots of compliments on it.
I wanted a pack that was small enough I could use it as a travel pack but large enough that I could pack a few extra lenses, a tripod, water, and clothing for a full day on the trails. This pack is the perfect fit for that. The waist belt is designed with as much attention to detail as what you'd expect on a pack designed to carry much heavier loads. With 2L of water, my full-frame camera, a tripod, puffy jacket, rain jacket, gloves, snacks, headlamp, etc. I still had plenty of room and didn't feel like I was wearing a pack at all. While the pack is NOT intended to be used as a running pack, it fit me well enough that I ran the entire descent and ended up making it back to the truck w/out a headlamp.
