Phenomenally Waterproof
I don’t often write reviews. The gear I buy usually either performs to my expectations or I see that the flaws I find have already been found and adequately reported. Only if the gear performs in an unexpectedly phenomenal way do I find myself inspired to write a review. This is one such occasion. I work as a raft guide in Idaho on the Snake River of Hells Canyon and was on a trip this past week (May 26, 2022) where it rained, as is characteristic of early season trips, in biblical proportions. We had camped below the confluence of the Salmon River on a steep beach and I had pitched my tent, this tent, a good four vertical feet above the water line. Now, if you are unfamiliar with the Salmon River, you should know that it is the longest wild river in the lower forty-eight, completely unchecked by dams, and therefore subject to rise and fall at the whims of the Salmon River watershed and only the Salmon River watershed. So, now with thousands more cubic feet per second hurtling down that drainage towards our camp, what I had thought to be an adequate buffer between myself and the rising river quickly turned out not to be so and, at two a.m, I awoke to find my lower half floating. The remarkable thing, though, and what warranted this review, was that though I was floating in the eddy, I and all of my belongings were completely and utterly dry inside the tent. This was even more surprising when I unzipped the door and saw that the water had risen to just half an inch below the zipper and that I was looking out from a duck’s eye view. I quickly got out and hiked everything up the bank considerably but, even then, I must have been in the river for at least twenty minutes or so before that and still, every part of the tent that was supposed to be waterproof: the footprint, the floor, the bottom three to four inches of wall (I realize much of the upper portion is mesh) was completely waterproof to the point of submersion. So, if you are looking for a tent to withstand the elements and possibly float down the river in, buy this tent. I was oh so glad that I did, and am very grateful to the quality of REI’s products.

Not worthy of the REI badge.
My son bought this tent based on my older-style P1 REI tent. I was hoping it would be the same except maybe with improved teardrop doors like the P2. We were on a short trail, and as soon as we unpacked it, we put it back and walked out without using it. Problems: Footprint. The included footprint has no grommet holes. It just ties around the stake-out webbing of the body. There's no way to pitch this as a rainfly/footprint only way. Fly. It seems lightly made compared to the older version, and there is no way to connect it to the pole tips directly. It anchors to the body by nylon clips. Stakes. Here's the clincher. The stakes that came with this tent are nothing more than heavy steel wire bent into a crude stake shape. They're not even tapered. My old-style P1 wasn't much more costly, but it was better in every way. All parts had standard, time-tested grommets to attach to the pole tips. It had decent aluminum stakes. This would be a fine tent at a third the price from a big-box store, but as an REI tent, it's an embarrassment.

Great on my cross country tour

I wrote my bicycle across the US in 2020 through 18 states and used this tent in all kinds of weather and terrain. The tent was big enough for me and I am 6' tall and I was able to place my sleeping bag, pad pillow and some clothes and my panniers on the vestibule and even cook while it was freezing rain and the tent was flawless. The zippers work the way they are supposed to and I was able to set it up on concrete as well as on River beds, the beach in Oregon and the desert in Craters of the Moon in Idaho. I recommend this tent for its versatility, durability and affordability. I had tent from Kelty which is nice but heavy and Big Agnes which I had bad luck and find overpriced but this REI Passage 1 tent was great and I highly recommend it.

Bombproof and versitile - I love my tent!

I used this all 2020 season on about 500 miles of total hiking over 15 trips. It is quick and easy to set up, packs well and the interior size is just perfect (I'm 5'10", 160 lbs). There is plenty of room inside and the vestibule is sized just well enough for shoes and a few items. There is not quite enough room in the vestibule to shelter the entire backpack so in wet conditions, one may need to bring a trash bag to cover up a pack. On the good side, this tent sets up in tight spots and due to being free standing, there isn't a need to guy out in all directions. The packability is great and I've never felt weighted down by this tent.

Very Reliable, Packable, Easy Setup

I took this tent backpacking with me in New Zealand. I went 100mi and spent many nights in this. This tent fits horizontally in my 70L backpack, or clips well to the bottom of it too. I set this up alone in maybe 10min. Never had any issues, it’s still my go to tent after years of use! Would recommend upgrading the stakes, I’ve had great luck and durability buying the MSR Groundhog stakes. As for the space it’s all you’d need if you don’t need extra room. I could throw my pack inside in a pinch, but it worked well most nights to leave it under the rain fly entrance vestibule. This tent does not disappoint! Very simple and easy to haul.

A Great Backpacker

This is a pretty fantastic one-tent. The compact design allows it to fit well in my pack without taking up too much room. It’s pretty light weight too. The tent has plenty of room inside. I could fit my pack inside with me but it was a little tight. The vestibule, however, provides plenty of cover for my pack and boots. The tent itself is super quick to set up and tear down without any complicated steps. I would recommend this tent for any seasoned trip, short or long.

Literally the best deal in outdoor gear

I think I paid retail for this tent so ~$134ish. Money so well spent. There's just nothing to be mad about with this tent, and I've had tents that cost 4x as much that left a lesser impression of quality. No condensation problems, great venting. Kept me dry in absolutely torrential rain on numerous occasions. Super easy and quick to pitch. Comes with a footprint! This is one item that has truly never let me down. I am usually cynical and hyper critical of gear if it makes me mad in any way and I am actually sentimental about this cheap simple tent. This thing punches way above its weight class.

Nice One Person Tent

This is a great one person tent for backpacking. I've taken it out several times and setup is quick and easy. So far, it seems pretty durable as well. I'm 5'9" and can also manage to put my pack in at the base of the tent although it is a little cramped. I'm a side sleeper though so I don't normally stretch all the way out. There is a convenient and good sized side pocket near the head of the tent for easy access to items. I did replace the supplied stakes with lighter Y tent stakes to shave off some weight. There are lighter tents out there but from a value/weight ratio, this tent is an excellent deal.

Perfect Size tent

I got this tent to use for trips where I didn’t need to bring my heavier 2 person tent but was a little nervous about the size. In the past, every 1 person tent I’ve had was too small and hard to do anything in but I was pleasantly surprised by this tent. I’m 5’6 and a wider person. I use a 30 inch wide sleep pad that fit perfectly with room to stick my pack at the end. I had plenty of room to change, sit without my head hitting the top, and packing up while inside was easy. Not to mention, it was a breeze to put up and take down. I did end up swapping the provided steaks out with lighter ones though.

Great Tent

Great one man tent with plenty of room and smart, quality features you expect from REI. Certainly not the smallest or lightest of one mans but for short/medium duration trips this tent is great. I especially liked that it came with the foot print and that the footprint is integrated to the tent so set up/takedown is easy. My shelter is up in half the time as my trail mates who all have more technically minded gear. I'm just shy of 5'10 and there is tons of room on the inside for me, pack, gear etc without even having to use the vestibule. At the price I'm very happy with it.

One man backpacking tent

So far love the tent for the price it's a a dynamite deal it is a little heavy but no big deal 4 pounds I have a lightweight re I Flash air 1 about 250 can't use it when it's cold if you can see your breath the tent gets wetter than a sauna bath inside at night it is a single wall tent it's useless at below 45 degrees. I took the passage up to the Shenandoah a couple months ago it rained about an inch and a half ice not a leak very little condensation inside the tent what was in the lightweight tent I would have been soaked literally soaked. I'm 5 foot 4 in tall so needless to say the tent is huge for me my pack fits at my feet.

Recommend - Great value, ample space inside!

Excellent backpacking tent! I have always previously used a 2-man tent when backpacking to allow space for myself and gear, especially during bad weather. I swear that I have looked at a previous, similar model, that just wasn't large enough. This tent has ample width for my shoulders and is longer (I am 6'1", 215 lbs.). I took it on a 10-miler two weeks ago and it performed well in cold conditions! I was comfortable inside and used the vestibule to stow most of my gear (except "smellables") and was very pleased with the space inside and quick setup! The footprint is a bonus and I always use one to protect the floor. I am very pleased with my purchase, and I used an REI 20% off coupon!
